AFL UMPIRE Dean Margetts is recovering in an Adelaide hospital after a medical emergency forced his flight to make an unscheduled landing.

Margetts had officiated in the Melbourne-St Kilda game at Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening.

He was on a Virgin Australia flight back to Perth, when he became suddenly ill.

The flight landed at Adelaide airport, and Margetts was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where doctors discovered a burst stomach ulcer.

AFL umpires boss Wayne Campbell said the veteran whistleblower was doing well and expected to spend the next few days recovering in hospital.

"Dean experienced some pain in his chest - it got quite bad and there was a doctor on board and he advised the pilot to return to Adelaide," Campbell told AFL.com.au.

"Dean had an operation yesterday morning, which revealed a perforated stomach that was caused by an ulcer.

"He's in good hands, the keyhole surgery was successful and his recovery time will be quicker than it might have been."

Margetts is one of the AFL's most experienced umpires, officiating in over 250 league games, but Campbell said it was "too early to tell at this stage" when the 41-year-old would return to the field.

"We've got a full complement of 32 listed umpires and we only need 27, so we've got enough umpires to cover him," Campbell said.

"We just want him to focus on his recovery."

It would be such a tragedy if he contracted a staph infection...

Am I only one that thinks that's selfish? If the professional athlete life isn't for you.....you make that decison before getting drafted. That guy has cost someone a chance at an AFL career.
Yeah, agree to an extent. If you're not 100% committed, then speak up. Because he's likely shattered the dream of another youngster somewhere whose lifelong dream has been to be drafted onto an AFL list and carve out a career.

In this kid's case, he was (is?) a gun rugby player who thought he might make it in the more lucrative sport of AFL. Worth a try and it's no-one's fault that it didn't quite work out. He gave it a go for two years +.

Any kid that missed a spot because of it wasn't quite good enough, IMO. Anyway, these days we see a fair few blokes get a second chance at an AFL career, so if the guy who just missed out on being drafted by Hawthorn keeps working on it, he may yet get there.

Technically, as a Category B rookie, he didn't really cost anyone a chance at their career.

How do you know if the professional athlete life is for you before you become one.

I think it would be more selfish to go through the motions until the end of the year and then leave.

There would be thousands of teenagers/young men who'd want that spot.

These days teenagers good enough to drafted have to be in good shape and train regularly. If that's not for you as a career at a sporting organisation.....then don't waste the time of other people.

Do you honestly think being a teenager in good shape and training regularly is similar to the life of a professional athlete?

Entitled to your opinion, personally I believe they're not in the the same ballpark.

I'm not arguing that they are in the same ballpark. They do however get a taste for it at representative footy or state league prior to getting drafted. If they wanna do that X 10 at AFL level...great :thumbsu:......if not, seeya later......this isn't a part time gig.

It's a position not to be taken lightly.......think long and hard before making such a decision.

He accepted the offer in good faith. Didn't work out, move on. First world problem.

So a guy quits, it just means there's an extra spot on their list to draft someone else at the next draft who mightn't have had the chance otherwise.

Where exactly was a chance lost to play footy?

Did Gerard Healy really just say that Max Gawn had signalled his intention to take the number one ruck mantle in the AFL off Todd Goldstein??? And that his pre-season suggested he was up to it???

Jonathan Brown reckons that Stefan Martin is the most dominant "all round" ruckman in the league

It's true if "all round" is roughly translatable to Dream Team average. Stef managed a whopping 114 last year. Poor old Goldy could only manage 113.9

But if he's talking about Supercoach or even real football, yeah nah. Goldy is king

Just watched the Carlton draft camp.

Bolton is a good human. Will make a very good coach.

Agree. Was always going to make it as very highly regarded even back to Clarence days, just a matter of where.

It's a shame wasn't doing his AFL apprenticeship with us knowing our recent Tas connections, but good luck to him as Blues can't go much lower :thumbsu:

Cotchin needs a reality check. Richmond are mentally weak (even moreso than us). They won't contend any time soon.

Hope they seize his assets and put him on the next plane to NZ. Dusty would probably go too. He'd be well suited to playing for the Auckland Warriors, although he'd need to do some more work on his tatts
Hey mate
Just wondering if your keen on AFL fantasy this year?
