Intriguing.....Done Deal ??????

I have made no secret of my desire to hit the draft for midfielders.............but

If it indeed is a done deal, it strongly suggests that we rate one or more of our current players and/or
Tomlinson or Marchbank as midfielders.

Charlie Curnow and Casey Byrne are two that come readily to mind. Plowman has been suggested as
having midfield prospects, even Weitering played midfield as a kid, and has the skills, I also floated
the outside possibility of SOS having some midfield potential some time ago. Expect Sumner to enter
the mix with a preseason behind him. We do need some "silk" though.

For those questioning Marchbank......don't. Absolute gun in the making, slightly undersized KPD, but
skills, smarts, commitment and mobility are elite.

We have Rowe for the gorillas for a year or two, then enter Jesse Glass-McCasker.

If we have the midfield "sussed" then I could support the deal.
So you want a backline of Marchbank, Plowman, Weitering and JGM?

With our penchant for half back flankers where do they fit? That's a tall defence.

Love a good hypothetical draft scenario.

Carlton out. Pick 5, 41
In: Tomlinson, Hoskin-Elliott, Marchbank, 16 (GWS first)

Carlton out: Pick 23, 50 (dogs), 59, Everitt
In: Pick 9 (GC)

Carlton out: Any two of Buckley, White or Graham
In: Pick 38 (Lions)

Go to draft with 9, 16, 38, 77
Ins: Tomlinson, Marchbank, WHE
Outs: Everitt, Buckley, White.

I'd be stunned if we turned down the opportunity to recruit Marchbank because we have JGM on the rookie list.

Come on FBI.......
The post suggested the possibility that one or more of those players could be in the midfield....or up forward for that matter.
The modern game is about flexibility, btw all of Weitering, Marchbank and Plowman have the pace and capacity to play on
smaller players, while JGM's was a notable highlight was a goal line save with some real "wheels" involved.
Simpson (short term), Docherty, Tuohy, Byrne, Sheehan, (Thomas) along with the young talls, Rowe and White in the short
term, and maybe Jaksch and DVR give us one serious defensive unit.

If we are not chasing mids in the draft, it means others are earmarked for the role, some of whom are named above.

Im not saying its a case of Marchbank vs JGM, just that, that was that poster envisioned the backline as, and I think its too big.

And as for the "opportunity" to recruit marchbank, spare me personally. He's not Stephen Silvagni and doesnt fit the obvious holes in our list for his asking price.

Weve already got a pick #1 and #3 in our backline. I just dont see the sense in adding another elite defender when we have sooooo many bigger problems in the midfield.

Are people not satisfied with our excellent defence this year, which despite some games with huge inside 50 numbers has done really well?

Fix the midfield and we become a better team. Add more to the backline and it changes nothing.

Damien Barrett amongst others have reported he may be looking to come home. Not many people put much credence into whatever Barrett reports/claims which is probably why there is a lack of discussion regarding Crouch.

But fwiw... I'd LOVE to have Crouch roaming around our midfield with Crippa next season!

Crouch looks average...hasn't done anything special at afl level and injury prone.

Pass

I love a good hypothetical too.......just not so much an unrealistic one :)

That's so much in our favour that it's..................just too much in our favour.

No way GWS go for the first trade we'll need to give more than that

Second trade could fly if we have our eye on someone at pick 9

Hate the third trade. Pick 38 is a nothing pick anyway...why give up 2 players who still have some potential?
Also, we are not yet in the position to trade away our immediate depth players. White is still getting a game right now and Buckley/Graham have been on the cusp a few times. Its not just about the starting 22...you want a decent top 30.

Agree with this. Our backline is the most solid line in the team atm...Rowe can do the job for another year or 2.

We already have a #1 and #3 pick KPDs...we dont necessarily need another. History shows you can get decent KPDs later in the draft.

We should focus this year on mids and maybe a KPF.

I think someone quoted SOS saying as much that he was pretty happy with our defensive unit...so im sure thats the way we will go Flowers

Steele, Marchbank and Tomlinson... and maybe a second round pick coming back this way as well...

I'd like to know other people's thoughts on this...

I would trade our first for Steele, Tomlinson and Marchbank. I think they'd want our future first, which i would also be prepared to give.

This GWS situation with their surplus of talented youngsters may never be seen again. We need to take the opportunity.
3 young guns for 1 pick is a no brainer.

Those 3 are much better than Whiley, Jaksch and pick #19.

One thing i dont see people discuss, is the need for us to rebuild but ideally be pushing top 4 BEFORE Murphy & Gibbs retire.
No point pushing in say 5 years, only for those 2 to retire and set us back again.

I think thats part of the reason why SOS is going for early 20 year olds...still young enough but a bit more mature and fast-tracked than fresh 18 year olds.
Getting Steele, Tomlinson and Marchbank would give us 3 guys with a bit of time in the system.
By trading our future first for them, we can also draft the best available mid at #6.

This gives us the chance to push top 4 and premiership contention in 3-4 years, while Murphy & Gibbs are still around.

I don't think a backline consisting of Marchbank, Plowman, Weitering and JGM would be too tall, considering their collective football smarts and ability.

Compare to Hawthorns backline from the GF:

Stratton (189) Lake (195) Frawley (193)
Birchall (193) Gibson (189) Burgyone (186)
Average: 190.83

Byrne (187) JGM (198) Plowman (193)
Marchbank (193) Weitering (195) Docherty (185)
Average: 191.5

Can't imagine there'd be a stronger defence than that in the comp if all players come along as hoped.

Tomlinson, Hoskin Elliott and Marchbank add to the teams depth, we can get depth through free agency with players like Van Berlow and others. There are still good players around at 35-45.

You guys are chatting like Marchbank will cost heaps, how can you know not to go after a player if you dont know his cost.

I really do like that defence. What people are forgetting is that both Marchbank and Weitering could play as forwards and Plowman could go into the midfield or play as a running HBF. There is a lot of flexibility in that group and the other thing is we need as much talent as we can get, so if we can add 3 or 4 GWS player for the right price I don't think SOS would say "we don't want Marchbank he's a great young talent but we have too many good players in our defence you can keep him or trade him to the saints."

If we need mids than draft them, use our first 3 picks this year and next and rookie a couple of VFL players like the Ballard brothers. Midfields are easy to build, defences are we're premiership are build and forwards are nearly impossible.

Realistically Gibbs, Murphy and Kruz will not be there when we challenge for a flag, Murphy is 29 this year. Most mids steadily decline around 31 onwards. Even 3-4 years is a stretch.
