Selwood was better than Bartel and most certainly better than the majority of the side. Without his performance in the last half we'd have lost by 10 goals.

He's a victim of his own high standards it seems... if only he was afforded the same luxury as Bartel around these parts.

I see Selwood totaled one point in the MVP thread......provided by you. Not mentioned in The Age best players either I see, or the AFL site.......

In fact this is what was written about Joel.....

I can only presume he isn't fit, because he had little influence on the game IMO. The way I saw it, Bartel was better than Selwood this week, but we all see things differently I guess.

U cannot be cereal. Selwood was ordinary and had pretty well no impact on the game. Nothing to do with 'high standards'. Its about getting a kick and making a difference, and being a leader-all things he generally does very well. He didn't yesterday. Bartel was calm and solid all game. Worked hard. Didn't lose his head once, made sound choices, showed good skills. As he has all this year after a couple of average years. Great to see.

But, but the Dawks are only 7th on the ladder? Shouldn't they be 1st in order to gain your respect?

We press up into the opponent's forward line.

Then we get the ball, and on some occasions get the sling shot goal out the back, but most often, have no one to kick to, so start a chain of handballs to players under pressure until we turn it back for an easy goal.

I believe the game plan is/was to kick long from the back line to a contest where we would either mark or force a stoppage. Then we were winning stoppages/clearances and going forward so it was working well. Not winning them now, and still dont have any run from half back to substitute for this.

No surprise that two flat games have coincided with two consecutive average to below par games from Dangerfield, Selwood and Motlop (Danger clearly the best of the three yesterday).

The handballing to stationary team-mates is a teamwork problem directly related to the "new team" issue, with so many players unfamiliar with each other. It was predicted and predictable pre-season. The surprise is not that it happened, but that it's happened so seldom; the gelling together in most games has happened more quickly than seemed likely, but the inconsistency in this aspect was, once again, entirely predictable and predicted before the season started.

It worked really well. I noticed it and thought, "thank God we've stopped that slingshot crap".

The chipping in the backline is okay but only as a tactical move when the opposition flood numbers back to mitigate against our aforementioned "good" game plan. It forces them to come back and we can then kick long with a bit more confidence.

This is were I differ from the Anti Scott posters , I believe our players need to stand up and take full responsibly for what is going on .We have enough talent to beat Carlton today , but our players didn't bring enough intensity and were very lazy with their disposals.

Premiership sides are made up of players who are self motivated and set high standards themselves .Remember after we lost to north in 07 ? it was the players not the coaches who took responsibility.

I have lingering doubts about Scott to be honest. Then again I did about Bomber in 2006 too.
Yet as proved to be the case then and i think now, players need to get a massive kick up the backside. their levels of intent is deplorable to be honest.

Funny how the buzzards come swooping and throw around terms like Fan boys when we are at our poorest.
I think our issues run deep. perhaps we don't have the much vaunted depth we maybe we had.
In all honesty who in the VFL is screaming to be picked?

Vardy? GHS can be honest but is solid at best. Bews struggles to make the transition to AFL, Murdoch got picked and god knows why? yeah sure maybe we pick a green player (Hayball) and just give them a shot, but you would be foolish to pick more than one at a time.

Personally i was totally p*ssed off yesterday and mainly at the players bar one or two, Scott to an extent too. Call me a fan boy but lets wait and see how we sit at the end of the year?

Too many knee jerkers on here that only come to post when it suits them.
No problem with differences of opinions but seriously short of sacking a coach mid season, isnt the best option to wait and see how 2016 goes?

Well if we concede 12 goals 5 from turnovers, we'll get smashed. Full credit to Carlton, but we were pathetic today....

Its time the players took some responsibility for turnovers of that magnitude....you can have tactics and strategy and moves all you like, but if the players hand over 77 points to the opposition, there's not much the coaches can do on match day.

We have been great at balancing keeping possession with attacking for most of the season so far - last 2 weeks have seen us turn it over with poor skills and decision making - most un Geelong like. We turned it over in the corridor yesterday and that always ends in tears , retain possession instead and chances are you move inside 50 and have a shot. Fine line but we haven't got it right the last 2 weeks

You've misunderstood the context, GC26 has constantly said on here 'just admit it I was right,' about his ridiculous predictions of our new dynasty, I was simply mocking him rather than really thinking that.

Our mids did turn it over, but our backs did quite bit as well due to the pressure. You're obviously right though that if our mids won more clearances and worked harder then the opposition would have less inside 50s and less quality inside 50s. The main problem I see as I tried to express above is that our whole game style is set up to help the obvious speed and agility weaknesses of our defence.

We have had a slow defence for the past 10 years, sides didn't just figure this out 2 weeks ago.

But the truth is we won't win the flag this season or do anything with Scott at the helm so I'd prefer we understand that sooner rather than later and if that means short term pain for long term gain then so be it.

It may be too simplistic a view, but most problems in any structure or area of the ground will be compensated for if you are winning the ball in the midfield, especially with clearances. Your forwards will get quick, plentiful supply of the ball and your backs will be put under less pressure and have more time to set up.

Scott is slowly developing other players to go back down there such as Guthrie,Bews and Ruggles .I reckon when Sellwood comes back that Guthrie might go into the back 6.

In fact next year when we get Thurlow back we will have some good speed in our back 6.

Yeah in 2011 we had a slow defence but the game was much slower then too and there were hardly any goals being scored out the back in the fashion they are now. A good defence now has to be agile and quick to cope with and protect the inevitable out the back type situations that are created more and more these days rather than big bodied, and plodding like defences of the past.

I've always thought the speed of decision making and ball movement is far more important than the speed of a particular player.

Mostly agree with that but in the era of the small quick forward and huge amounts of space being created in forward halves I think speed in a modern defender is increasingly becoming more important.
