Depression is hardly a niche issue. Certainly a coach shouldn't have to be able to provide the same sort of psychological support that a trained medical professional can, but what we're talking about here is a very basic understanding of an extremely common ailment that lots of people have to deal with every day.I wouldn't have thought many people, especially in a semi-amateur league, would have the requisite skills. Unless there happens to be someone at the club who works with depressed people in their real job. Sometimes it's just not possible to provide appropriately trained and supportive people to deal with every ailment that people are dealing with.
That isn't something just a coach should have to deal with, it's something every person should know how to approach. It's a very basic and necessary skillset if you're going to be in the business of dealing with people, as coaches are. And it doesn't take much training to identify possible depression and say okay this person is clearly going through some stuff maybe I should change my approach here.
Burying your head in the sand and saying oh it isn't my speciality is naive and potentially very harmful.
