Hey I love Chooma but he's not an authority. He pretty much doesn't like any one other than Saints players. The point is I have seen enough from Oliver, Petracca and Brayshaw to say all three will be high level players and true mids. Viney is a gun, Nath Jones is a gun and Vince and Tyson are high output mids who are probably just off the top line mids. They have a few in development who are too early to call still. we have guys who are already there and a few in development and not the same quality yet. Billings, Acres and Gresh are all likely but probably still behind the three Melbourne guys at this stage. Newnes is a wing man which is a mid role but he's not a on ball contested-ball winner like some of their boys. We are ahead in the rebuild from were I thought we were because we are winning games but we still remain vulnerable to injury while we don't have depth. I think our biggest hole is that now. If all our players come on we have the best development people in the game, realistically not all will make it so we need to add to the pool.

So what you're saying is that we need to keep adding young talent. Where is the argument against a that?

Melbourne should have more talent & deeper depth than us...they've been trawling top 10 draft picks for the best part of a decade.

We all know that we need more midfield talent in. No one is disputing that... What is in question is your rating of Melbourne's fringe players, who as a group are pretty average.

Based on when the two clubs respectively started their rebuilds, we should be bloody wrapt how far we've come so quickly.

Going forward our forward like is better (& we don't have our best KF potentially leaving)

Our future backline is better.

Our future midfield is probably a few drafts or a few FA's/trades behind.

Our coach plays theirs in a break.

The subtle racism needs to stop. It's not entertaining nor is it clever.

It's just a pain in the ass to scroll through to read actual insightful posts.
You mean there are some of those

Fail to see the subtley frankly.

Totally agree.
Nothing to do with his heritage.

Would we think to do the same about an indigeneous player?

Wow, terribly disappointing to see racism flowing forth.
No surprises it's from those who have suggested the more ridiculous trades/de-listings, extremely unintelligent.

We have our forward line and rucks set but we still need work on the backline and our mid field depth is still poor, Bruce, Membery and Paddy look formidable but Hogan and Weed are going to be decent too. They might lose Hogan but they will at least get something good back as he's so hyped they will clean up if he does leave. I reckon we are still going to have a drop off post Rooey, Dempster, Montagna etc. If we keep getting in players to keep the quality up all good but I think their list is in better shape with more over all depth but winners are grinners and we are getting better from the players we have ATM. I'm pretty happy to with where we are at right now but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

I hope we can get Mc Kenzie, Acres, Lonie etc to step up another level because if they can we probably stay ahead of them for the future. If we make a few mistakes in our trading and drafting it could bring us back down.

Anyway I think you might be arguing for the sake of it, it doesn't sound like we are in disagreement.

Surely your not serious

I don't think he is usually so I would read most of his posts as sarcastic or ironic. If he's talking up a spud take it as him meaning he'd rather have his genitals in a blender than have him on our list.

I wasn't racist but I think I have to take responsibility for some of the more ridiculous suggestions. Brand them racist all you want but not spud lovers.

It's an interesting point - "a drop off post Rooey, Dempster, Montagna etc" I wonder what that will look like?

Potentially they might all go at the end of 2017.

Firstly you can't replace Roo so we don't even think about trying. We've essentially done so having Baroose, Paddy and Skunk allowing him to play on the wing but we will sorely miss the 14 marks and 20 something disposals he seems to get each week not to mention the 30-40 goals he contributes each year. EDIT: I dont mean replace him in the fwd line I mean allow him now to play wing and up the ground as he doesn't need to play there...

Dempster, well we've been talking about needing a 3rd defender be it Hurley, Marchbank, Scrimshaw in this years' draft or someone else. We'll likely lose Fisher this year on top of Hugh G being out for most of next year (he'll need half of next season just to get back to the swing of things so I'm backing Hughie to impact in 2018. We get Carlisle back who will negate the Fisher loss but I think this shows why we need that 3rd defender. Lee/Delaney are cover for iunjury although with Coughlan coming along nicely they might decide to delist both Lee and Delaney come end of this season.

Joey - been huge for this club and still contributes off half back. A great senior leader. However perhaps we can replace him either with who we currently have, (Webster, Roberton, Savage) or recruit someone who plays the rebounding qtr back role off the half backline....

I would hope it staggers - Fish this year, Dempster next year, and Roo/Joey the year after that, i.e. one more year from the pair of them, (although by then they might be taking spots that should go to Sinclair, McKenzie etc)???

Montagna is still playing excellent football and being an on baller being played in a less bone crunching role I reckon he could potentially go on the longest of all of them. Rooey is probably an injury away from retirement at any moment and Dempster is starting to drop off slightly. Fisher probably gone but we might hold off another year for depth. Lee probably the better back up than Delaney, his body is pretty wrecked. Coghlan and White should sure up the defensive stocks longer term but probably need one more quality tallish back in development or trade.

Still worry the mid field is the biggest issue but it's probably right we need quality not depth for the sake of it.

Melbourne really don't need him, they need KP players.
Do they?

Going forward:

FB: Tom McDonald (24*, 194cm 101kg)
CHB: Oscar McDonald (20, 196cm 94kg)
CHF: Sam Weideman(19, 195cm 93kg)
FF: Jesse Hogan (21, 195cm 104kg)
Floating: Jack Watts (25, 196cm 94kg)

Other:
Max King (21, 200cm 96kg) - also ruck
Mitch King (19, 199cm 90kg) - also ruck
Chris Dawes (28, 193cm 104kg)
Cam Pedersen (29, 193cm 96kg)
Sam Frost (23, 193cm 92kg)
Liam Hulett (19, 193cm 89kg)
Lynden Dunn (29, 192cm 102kg)
Colin Garland (28, 191cm 92kg)

Even taking out Dawes, Garland, Dunn and Pedersen, which won't happen all at once, that's 7 genuine KPP types and 2 ruck/fwds, along with big Max Gawn.

I'd say they're OK for the moment.

To put it into some perspective, even stretching it to blokes like Roberton, Gilbert, Dempster and Payne who can play as KPPs, but aren't really, going forward we have:

FB: Hugh Goddard (20*, 196cm 98kg)
CHB: Jake Carlisle (24, 198cm 102kg)
CHF: Josh Bruce (24, 197cm 102kg)
FF: Paddy McCartin (20, 194cm 95kg)
Floating: Nick Riewoldt (33, 193cm 96kg)

Others:
Nick Coughlan (20*, 193cm 84kg)
Tom Lee (25, 194cm 95kg)
Luke Delaney (27, 194cm 98kg)
Dylan Roberton (25, 194cm 94kg)
Sam Gilbert (30* 194cm 90kg)
Brenton Payne (20*, 193cm 87kg)
Sam Fisher (34, 191cm 95kg)
Sean Dempster (32, 191cm 87kg)

I wouldn't call that a vast gulf between the two TBF.

Yes agreed - White was the one I forgot to mention - beautifuol kick and could be that half back general. Imagine kicking skills of White, Webster and Savage

NICE!! :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Who be the last of the vets to retire and is there any chance that they will see a serious finals campaign?

I reckon Joey and Rooey are the most likely to go on. Rooey the club would almost wheel out on a zimmer frame if he was determined to get there. Joey is just still an incredibly valuable player. He is only 30 disposals behind Jack Steven as our second highest disposal getter and he's playing as a rebound back pocket, leads us in meters gained by an average of 85 meters a week over JS, second in marks, first in kicks. Not bad for where he's playing.

Pick 9 for Steele and 17. The real question is how do our list management team get another pick between 19-25 into the club so they can target both FLorent and Scharenberg who I have heard from my sauces they have big wraps on.

I reckon they are a bit lighter on for KP talent myself. We have excellent forward structure with multiple prongs. we are light on down back though. There has been talk the Hawks are taking Mc donald and if Hogan gets snatched they are in trouble. Dawes and Pederson will be lucky to play anything but VFL. Garland and Dunn seem to be playing VFL too, Hullett looks okay.

They are okay but their mid filed squad runs very very deep so a couple of utility types and KP talent and they should have a pretty solid squad all round with plenty of depth and continued development. It will be really interesting to see what they do post Paul Roos. I haven't been the biggest Roos fan at Melbourne but he's instilled a bit of work ethic and he's leaving them with a very strong list. If the handover works they should be in a good place to have some sustained success.

I like Jonty particularly, he plays like his big brother but probably a bit more true mid than rebound back. He's a neat player. I reckon that's overs for Steele myself, probably want something like tomlinson or WHE thrown in as a sweetener. He's probably worth a pick around 25 to 30 on his own Steele, down grading a high first rounder should only be on a proven star.
