Opinion Cam Guthrie - out of form? (and tangential Supercoach as guide to form discussion)

My hero Menegola? What? The guy has played 10 or so games and only had a few less touches than Guthrie, BUT had 6 tackles, Guthrie had one, yes ONE tackle while playing midfield for significant time in a prelim final. How do you excuse that? That's piss weak. Menegola is green and shouldn't be comparable to Guthrie who is a 100 game player, a guy who should be rising above in these games. He was rubbish. Soft, like always. Our second tier got tought a lesson last night, they're second / third rate, playing along side two champions.

Guthrie and that age group of players is a huge part of why we're not good enough. It was always the way, we fall too sharply after Dangerfield and Selwood. He's not a midfielder, which is a reality you and some others need to face. Not in a decent side. His contested and defensive game as a mid is laughable.
So what? You reckon replace all the Guthries and and Langs with first round draft picks. I bet they wish it were that easy.

He was relatively less of a shittruck than Blicavs, Duncan and Motlop etc according to the B&F. All these threads being bumped due to b&f results idk :'(

Because what seems like a very similar set of plebs wanted these players dropped. Guthrie, Duncan, Caddy, Motlop, Blicavs and even Hawkins.

Of that 6 there were two that really disappointed and on tonight appear to have done so in the eyes of the MC. Caddy and Motlop.

The other 4, well their form or lack thereof was overstated by said doom and gloomers.

Duncan and Guthrie in particular didn't play bad football, they merely failed to live up to the expectations fans had for them. Maybe those expectations should be tempered now, maybe they're not going to be those players that become AA midfielders (the hardest position to be AA btw). Both are quite good on the outside, in transition but aren't ever going to be prolific inside players. Not all are.

If we are looking for a player that needs a rocket in that department it appears to be Caddy.

And quite rightly so......tho whether he was ever 100% after his mid-season injury is something only insiders really know.

The club last night viewed him to be less than 1/2 a vote per game worse than Selwood. A man named AA Captain this season.

I guess you could say they were well pleased with his output :)

Um, you're plainly ignoring his hair, long sleeves and weird socks. GWTP.

Lol. Talk about clutching at straws.

Do you think that 'less than 1/2 a vote per game' than Selwood represents Guthrie's year as a comparison? What's your opinion on that? To suggest that 'the club' rates Guthrie so close to Selwood with these votes as your backup hysterical. :D Anyone who knows anything about the sport knows this is rubbish.

On any scale, Dangerfield should have dominated by more than this. Dangerfield and Selwood should have had a lot more points than that of 3rd place. Obviously the award is one measure of performance, arguably not necessarily an accurate one. How about the Brownlow? Dangerfield 35, Selwood 18, Guthrie 3. See how silly it is to use awards to judge players?

I mean, imagine if Guthrie had beaten Blicavs (popular whipping boy) for the award last year, how much more would you all be singing his praises?? The truth is, they were both rubbish last year... Our midfield was rated 18th (worst in the league). They are both underperforming, the gap between Danger / Selwood and the rest is FAR too big, which has been identified in the media over and over again. Guthrie is responisble here.

Where was he in the Preliminary final? Getting torn to shreds by a guy who evidently retired, then does nothing in the midfield. What did he have, 1 tackle for the game? Where was the intent that Selwood and Dangerfield showed? That the whole Dogs team showed? Is he really this soft? This was consistent with most of the games we struggled in during 2016.

I can't believe you guys can be happy with his 2016 overall, after he did show some promise in a couple of games. Guthrie, along with the other 2nd tier players are arguably the reason we couldn't make it all the way in 2016. It's where the gap is, like I said.

You need to quit accepting mediocrity, and being emotional about individual players. Guthrie is in the prime of his career, if this is the best he's got, he's nothing but a bog average player. Simple as that.

I won't lie, I didn't read a word of this post.
Hater is well noted

238 votes to 229. The club has spoken. Guthrie is no spud worthy of dropping.

To quote Choco Williams "you were wrong".... in the clubs eyes :D

The club used the flawed voting system in place.. exactly my point.

Guthrie is barely half the player Selwood is.

Fine.

To every other measure there is, the club is wrong... Not that your position of claiming the club (as a whole) would be willing to accept measuring their players purely on the B&F count isn't just idiotic, and hilarious!

If the club thinks Guthrie is that close to Selwood in terms of ability (as you do), the place is full of halfwits. But it doesn't. Which just goes to show how meaningless this count is in terms of measuring player v player.

And of course you won't share your opinion on the matter, like always.

Fail..

Then that's the problem.

Comparing Guthrie to Selwood is insulting to Selwood.

The club accepts mediocrity from players all year, and then those players fail to perform in finals yet again. It proves the point once again that the current group isn't being held to high enough standards if it is to be successful. Players aren't being held accountable for poor performances, more isn't being asked of them, and the standards for on and off-field performance aren't high enough. The treatment of Motlop all year exemplifies this, as does continuing to give Blicavs pats on the back because of the progress he's made rather than actual output.

Guthrie was nowhere in Selwood's league this season. That's insulting.

100% correct!

Look at the comradery the Bulldogs have, the team is such a cohesive unit - great culture. When one of their marquee players wasn't performing, they dropped him (Stringer). That's what you call not accepting mediocrity, and setting a solid precedence for the club. And if you ask me, it's in the best interest of the player(s) in question too, it allows them to self reflect.

But all you emotional fans like Doctor Gero , carry on. Carry on defending players like Guthrie who simply don't show the intent and passion that is worthy of the jumper. Chris Scott is on your side - and failing now he actually has to do some 'real' coaching / managing of the players in terms of culture and standards.

You're a twit. What there to defend, he had a good season. You're the one in the minority on this.

On a Cats forum, I'm sure I am the minority. As I said though, too many of you take it personally when a player is criticised. I understand this. It doesn't make me wrong though.

For those who can see this from a logical perspective, who want the side to operate at it's best and ultimately win another flag, they know what I'm talking about. Guthrie (and others) must lift if we're to take the next step - his season for a 100+ game player in his prime was not acceptable. If you're happy to cheer your blue eyed boy on while he plays soft, go for it.

In your opinion, an opinion not everyone shares.

Would you say Jordan Lewis had an unacceptable season?

You have to admit, he is pretty fond of his hair though..
I would have no idea really. Should I assume so because it's longer than average? If you saw me you'd know I'm not a hair guy! :D

I'm not a hair guy either but I reckon I can spot a hair guy. When I think about it I'm more your hair envy guy :p Btw I think it's length, thickness, colour, lustre and wave that determines whether you're a hair guy. Guthrie ticks all 5 boxes.
