Except once again we've shown interest too early, gone public and are now pressured into taking him, whatever the deal. Imagine the melt here and media reaction if we try to play hardball and lose.

We're not going to lose him. What we will do is get a fair trade because unless you are Dodoro, all you want is a win/win with your trading partner. Ameet has already proved that he will stick to his guns, but doesn't have to screw anyone over to get the deal done.

I heard trade period is a mercifully shorter 10 days this year.

I hope we are brewing a way of taking advantage of gold coast and their ridiculous amount of early draft picks that they can't possibly use.

It's a very unusual situation with them this year, I hope we can get some benefit somehow.

Darcy Gardiner still hasnt resigned with the Lions their forum suggests he is a strong chance to leave, he would be great pick up as a key defender IMO. He has a real competitive steak and sort of reminds me of Maxie the way he throws himself at contests.

Has anyone done the maths on how many players we need to bring in assuming fisher retires?

Assuming Fisher is moved to the rookie list and we don't trade or delist anyone else.
We will need to draft 2 players to the senior list + Jack Steele and 1 to the rookie list.

No, we'll still need to delist one more and pick up another in the national draft (or promote a rookie).

Assuming Fisher goes off the senior list then that's three off, but assuming we get Steele then that's one back on. The rules say we need to have three free senior list spots heading into the ND, so one more needs to go. Presumably Shenton or Murdoch, maybe Templeton. Then we'd be using picks 10, 47, 65 in the national draft, which isn't great draft position but if we're happy enough with the rest of the list then I suppose we'd take it.

Trade in any more players and that's another one we need to release.

A tough problem is we probably have about 28 pushing for the 22 which is lovely to see and was not even the case in 1997 or around 2009.

Maybe, but only because the fringe players aren't AFL quality yet. Players 20-30 at this point are probably: Gilbert, Wright, Webster, McKenzie, Steele, Sinclair, Minchington, Lonie, Longer, White. Not sure any of them would get consistent games with a top 8 side (except North).

I was obviously a bit bored and watch a whole lot of NEAFL games to see him on YouTube. He's a very good player at that level but he's not exciting like Blake. He's more meat and potatoes than Acres possibly more consistent though. He should be a good player but he's not as exciting as some are making out. I'm not trying to be a downer but I think he should be seen as a project not a ready made gun or we will have a scape goat on our hands when he doesn't play like Ablett from day one.

I think every player we have recruited from other clubs have been project player though. Even Acres is a project player who's only really just starting to show.

I for one am very excited about Jack, yes he's not a ready made star, no one is claiming that, but I honestly think he has as much potential as Acres.

Seeing that Hawthorn had their B&F award last night, I'd be happy if this bloke comes out and nominates us as well. Can see him improving under a years tutelage from his good mate Chips, would only cost us what they outlayed for him, third round pick about 65. I know I've been harping on him, but reckon he has the size & youth to fit our team in going forward.

They will finish with a heap of top 30 picks. Will depend on their likely academy requirements next year, but if there are some then you could see some benefit in pre-preparing and staggering a pick for next year.

I like the concept as it allows us to get a kid in now rather than next year. Obviously the strength of the drafts will be a key one and you would need to factor that into the price. Just as you would the risk we are belted by injuries (or no good) and the risk we are sacrificing pick 5 next year. So I'd be looking for more than that. But perhaps there is a way to split next year's first to get into that space late in the first round this year, while keeping 'half' for next year (say, late first or early second). Having a pick in the late teens this year seems attractive given its evenness, but means you could also keep pick 10.

Of course, you need the other side to do it. And there's plenty of positives and negatives on our side, depending on everyone's individual preferences.

Lets say next years pick is expected to be pick 12. This years and next years first would equal 2,663 points.

Picks 4 and 28 = 2,711
Picks 6 and 22 = 2,596

Now, I know they are losing points in the first trade, but there is a fair chance they will have to use pick 4 on Bowes, so downgrading that pick to 10 and getting another first rounder next year might not be a bad idea for them.

Pick 6 and 22 is probably the more likely though and if it meant that we got one of Luggage, McGrath, Brodie, Taranto, SPS then I'd do that deal. Still some good talent around pick 22 also.

If Gold Coast end up with 4,6,8 I would love to bring next year's 1st to this year, obviously have to throw in a player as our pick could be anything from 8-13ish but would give us a serious in flow of talent that will prime us for 2019 onwards if we could end up with 8 and 10. Or perhaps go even harder and go 10+2017 first for 4 and one of their picks in the 20s, getting McCluggage if he slides would be a dream come true plus hopefully a Simpkin or galluci at 23 or whatever the pick is. It's a bit of AFL live on PS3 trading but would be great to pull off.

I'm torn about the prospect of selling next years picks for extra picks this year.

I think this year is the last year ANYONE we draft will be genuinely useful to us in 2018-2020 when we are hoping to really be contending.

Any draft picks, no matter which number or how good they are.... will need a few years of development to really be cemented in the 22 and adding real value to the team in 2018-2020.

So it would make sense to load up on picks this year at the expense of next year.....

But that then REALLY limits our options of landing a big fish mid via FA or trade next year (and beyond).

I'd hate for us to be out of the running for a guy like fyfe because we can't trade for him after freo matched a RFA bid. (hypothetical situation of course).

Too risky I think.

Infact I'd be more inclined to do the reverse and if we don't like the looks of anyone at 10 this year.... we should offer pick 10 to freo for their 1st rounder next year.

They reckon they will shoot back up the ladder after 1 bad year and are keen to rebuild asap, so I reckon they'd do it.


Going into next year with 2 first rounders would certainly help land us the gun mid we desperately need.

Next year you also have to consider maturing assets such as an extra ruck and other players which become surplus. These can be used to trade back in to the draft.

I understand your reticence, with his idea, but we have to believe that we will go further next year, so we will be further away from grabbing a gun midfielder.

If there is a RFA next year that we want, our SC will still be able to blow just about everyone else out of water, if it is feasible.

Don't be surprised if it happens sooner rather than later. Sinclair, Lonie and Templeton were all stuck in the twos for most of the year, it'll only get harder with Steele and Tim Taranto running around.
