Classic Gaz.

Surely his wife isn't infantile enough to force him to take a pay cut of probably over a million bucks a year just so they can go live an hours drive from Melbourne only a few years before he retires anyway?

His wife is probably a factor but there would definitely be things going on that we don't know about.
Wife is a tiny part of the equation.

So you're trying to say we should forgive him because we drafted him and gave him the opportunity to taste ultimate success while paying him good money for doing something he loved.
And you're also trying to say that we may not have won any GF's without him, well 2011 we didn't need him so who's to say we needed him for the other two, however I do agree he deserved the accolades mentioned and I did love and support him as a Geelong player but as soon as he shit on our club that was it, many a player have knocked back lucrative cash to stay loyal one club players but not that bald headed campaigner, so now he can GAGF and whatever he cops in life is deserved.
Please Let go the bitterness. Unless you know all the before and after facts, no point having an attitude of closed doors.

Nobody had ever been offered such a lucrative deal as he was. If you were offered a million a year to do what you love to do would you say no?

For the first part. That's up to the individual.
Personally have never had any bad feelings towards GAJ so not really anything to forgive.

As for the 2nd part. I won't accept or respect an opinion that describes him as a 'campaigner'. That's too disrespectful imo. Players leave football clubs, hell our reigning B&F winner did just that.

Crows fans detest him now for leaving (well some do anyway), the difference here is that he earned enough credits in the bank for their to be no ill will for his decision. He's a two time Premiership player, B&F winner and Brownlow medallist at this club and for that he deserves our respect.

You do as you wish, I find your view on Gary to be in poor taste. The Ablett name does still hold some reverence with me anyway.

Someone said he had a long standing pimple on his head. I sincerely doubt the paleo diet was strict enough and wouldn't trust his integrity in general on that basis.

Wife is a tiny part of the equation.
I can't help but think the wife is being made a scape goat for a desire to come home much the same way Dangers wife was...

People just can't accept that someone may not be looking to go elsewhere from their own club

i loved him playing for GFC. I hope he is not stupid enough to read this site and take on board the hate.
If I were GCFC I would release his regardless if he is not fully on board. He did what was required . he was their Marque player when they were a fledging club and played great footy and was on all their publicity. Imagine the salary cap room it would free up to go after the next big thing at GCFC. I hope GAJ then comes back sometime to GFC in some role. Just to remind me of the fun I used to have watching him play in the hoops. Almost as a much fun as watching his dad.

This is becoming a bit like a soap opera.

GARY Ablett has stepped down as Gold Coast captain and is contemplating quitting football at the end of next season.

"In the back of my mind I want to play two years, but I can't guarantee that and that's because of everything that's going on in my personal life," he said.

"I'm contracted for another two years and I'll sit down with the club at the end of this year and chat.

"Trying to juggle football life and life outside football, I need to see where things are at at the end of this year and I'll make a decision then.

"FORMER Carlton captain and Fox Footy analyst Mark Maclure says the Gold Coast Suns should trade Gary Ablett as soon as possible, potentially back to Geelong"

Could it happen? I would love to see Selwood, Danger and GAJ in the midfield, and it's probably the best move for the Suns going forward.

Who would we trade? Would it be worth it?
To think I was mocked for saying this back in May.

Ether he will be with the GFC in 2018 or nobody at all.

Was drafted with Judd, Bartel, Kelly, SJ, Hodge, Ball, Dal Santo... so end 2017 would not be an unrealistic time to retire anyway, given his recent injuries. Majority of that group will have retired by then.
Plus the family issues- great time to head home and have some non- playing capacity at Geelong.
Time will tell.
Wouldn't feel like a real comeback if he didn't play.

I've never had the slightest problem with him leaving. The money was ridiculous and anyone with a brain would take it. The only annoyance for me was the customary "I thought long and hard / took a long time to make up my mind" nonsense that's trotted out (to be fair, this is certainly not limited to Ablett).

More practically, he turns 33 in May.

I think he is being forced to retire to get back to geelong. Gut feel that is what happens
I hope not.

Hopefully GC will have the maturity to let him go, possibly by delisting him (not sure how that would work) and then we sign him. However, after witnessing the JOM saga I have a feeling Cochrane would have something to say about that.

As long as that arseh*le Cochrane is in charge GC won't be mature enough for anything . .

That said I would have loved it if it happened this trade season.. next year will be too late IMO

If he can get his body right he'd be up for Brownlow contention next season IMO.

Age doesn't bother a player of his caliber, not yet anyway. It's never too late.

I think that was the general point of view around the traps, Partridge.

It would had been nice had he accepted the $1m we offered and stayed but the additional bucks offered by GC would be hard to turn down, particularly for someone keen on a buck. My feeling is being the inaugural captain of a team he hoped would be successful was a consideration too.

However, as you suggest, it was the utter duplicity that put most of us off.

It will be interesting to see what his form is like in 2017...
