Elimination Final, 1972
Date: 9th September, 1972.
Location: Waverley Park
Crowd: 52,499

After a narrow loss at the hands of Hawthorn in the 1971 Grand Final, the Saints were back in September action, the clubs third successive finals appearance.

Essendon had made a massive turnaround (after finishing the 1971 season in second last place), finishing in 5th position and securing a spot in the finals. This would also be former Collingwood captain Des Tuddenham's first season in the Red & Black, moving to the Bombers as captain-coach; much to the outrage of the Magpie army.

We now take you to Waverley Park in front of 52,499 fans.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Stephens 4, Galt 3, Davis 2, Smith 2, Breen 2, Ditterich 2, Lawrence 2, Trott
Essendon: Blethyn 2, Roberts 2, Fields, Wilson, Parkes, Tuddenham, Noonan, Grinter

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Trott 22, Stephens 21, Davis 19, Judson 19, Manzie 19
Essendon: Davis 22, Fields 21, Wilson 20

More drop punts being used. But big Carl, what was with that munted ball drop?

More googling. So we lost:

Stewart
Big Carl
Elliott
Galt
Trott

Have I missed anyone from that era?

Nobody really comes to mind. Stuart Trott was a great player for us.

Crowd: 23,162

St.Kilda would host Fitzroy in today's game at Moorabbin Oval, the first home game for St.Kilda of the 1973 season. Fitzroy had come off a 50pt win against Footscray in Round 1 whilst the Saints also chalked up their first win of the year in a 32pt defeat of Melbourne.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Galt 5, Lawrence 4, Stephens 4, Davis 3, Colling 2, Moran 2
Fitzroy: Irwin 2, Murphy 2, McMahon, Wilson, McCulloch, Dare, Noonan, Renwick

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Davis 26, Elliott 26, Stephens 23, Colling 23, Manzie 23, Galt 20, Moran 20
Fitzroy: Richards 28, Irwin 22, Murphy 21

Shame Stephens didn't play on longer.
14 goals in first 6 rounds of '71, thigh injury ended his season (we played in a grand final that year).
Leading goalkicker, 53 goals from 22 games in 72.
24 goals from 15 games in 73.

43 games and 91 goals in total. What was the deal there? Only 23 too.

I suspect that he had to retire due to concussion.
Because every time we played Carlton, Vin Waite would knock him out.
And get reported.
And get suspended.
Why did he keep on hitting Stephens?
Might need to ask his missus....

Anyone notice a very young Mick Malthouse running around the backline for the Saints?

Eerily enough wearing the number that Stephen Milne went on to wear...and we all know those two didn't get along!

Cheers mate. Just googled 'Vin Waite John Stephens' and found this from a match report from 1972;

"Reports:
J.Stephens (St Kilda) reported for allegedly striking Paul Hurst in the third quarter - cleared as P.Hurst was not wearing the guernsey number recorded by the umpire.
Vin Waite reported for deliberately charging J.Stephens in the last quarter - 2 week suspension."

Seems on this occasion in round 8 of 1972 Johnny Stephens was in fact feeling an extra 17cm and 20kg worth of revenge.

Round 21, 1973
Date: 25th August, 1973.
Location: Moorabbin Oval
Crowd: 29,257

St.Kilda & North Melbourne entered today's contest both fighting for a place in the top 5 and ultimately advancing into the 1973 VFL finals series. For the time being the Saints were holding North out of the 5, sitting in 5th spot on 44 points. North Melbourne were right below them in 6th with 42 points. A win for North today would move them into a finals spot with a game remaining - but a win for St.Kilda would cement their place in September. Would North Melbourne champion Doug Wade push the Kangaroos into the 5? Or will it be St.Kilda's leading goal kicker for 1973, Allan Davis, getting the job done for the Saints at the other end of the ground?

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Davis 3, Young 3, Breen 2, Elliott 2, Trott 2, Davies, Galt, Mynott, Stephens
North Melbourne: Wade 5, Nolan 3, Peterson 2, Feltham, Goodingham, Ryan, Schimmelbusch

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Trott 25, Theodore 24, Manzie 23
North Melbourne: Goodingham 25, Peterson 24, Davis 24, Greig 22

Round 12, 1976
Date: 19th June, 1976.
Location: Princes Park
Crowd: 14,294

Sitting just outside the five at 5-6, the Saints were hoping today's travel to Princes Park to face Hawthorn would be a success. Hawthorn sat atop the VFL ladder at the conclusion of Round 11 in 1976, their only loss coming against rival top five side Carlton in Round 6.

St.Kilda started poorly and trailed 1.2.8 to Hawthorn's 5.5.35 at the end of the first term, and at half time the Hawks had a commanding 30 point lead. With the game all but lost, the Saints found inspiration through rover Bruce Duperouzel and ruckman Jeff Sarau in the third term to cut the margin to just two points entering the final stanza.

But the Saints weren't finished there. Their biggest scalp of 1976 came only 30 minutes later, and with the momentum from the start of the third term, St.Kilda weathered the five goal haul from Leigh Matthews and went on to beat the flag fancies by 25 points - and in doing so broke a 7 year hoodoo at the ground, winning for the first time at Princes Park since Round 3 of 1969.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Bell 3, Duperouzel 2, Muir 2, Lofts 2, Theodore 2, Reynolds 2, Colling, Callery, Malthouse, Ditterich, Hunt
Hawthorn: Matthews 5, Moncrieff 3, Bennett 2, Hendrie, Goad, Ablett

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Duperouzel 28, Bell 20, Muir 19, Baker 19, Sarau 19
Hawthorn: Matthews 25, Hendrie 25, Tuck 22, Bennett 21, Knights 21

A few things about this game:

Appreciate just how good Barry Lawrence is.
George Young: is he Fyfe's dad? Cause they look like twins.
Russell Reynolds: solid underrated back man from Claremont.
Graham Scott: one of our attempts to bring in a messiah. Does anyone remember him? No? Didn't work then huh. Won't work now.
Val Perovic: very young, probably pre-pubescent as he has no moustache.
And George Young........
Worth mentioning a second time, best left foot I've seen. Unfortunately his right foot was only there to keep him from falling over.

Finally, was searching for my old man's chrome dome in the crowd in front of the Social Club but without success.

Cracking hanger from Mad Dog Muir as well.

Oh and one more.

Doug Heywood calling the development of a pack as "unsightly".
The pack consisted of three players with no one else in camera shot.

The game has changed.

Round 4, 1980
Date: 19th April, 1980.
Location: Moorabbin Oval
Crowd: 30,947

Near on 31,000 people travelled to Moorabbin today to see the Saints taking on rivals Essendon on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Melbourne. St.Kilda hadn't gotten off to a great start in 1980, losing 2 and a draw in Round 3 vs Richmond leaving the hosts without a win entering Round 4. Essendon however were in the mix of finals contention early, sitting in 3rd at 2-1, thumping South Melbourne by 55 points the week prior.

Essendon's 1980 side was glittered with stars. Essendon captain Simon Madden led the charge, followed by the likes of Tim Watson, Merv Neagle, and Neale Daniher. For the Saints, Garry Sidebottom led the way as captain, followed by Jeff Sarau, Trevor Barker, Geoff Cunningham, Bruce Duperouzel, Gary Colling, and the newly acquired Alex Jesaulenko, who from Round 3 of 1980 captain coached St.Kilda after the sacking of coach Mike Patterson.

Whilst today's game was littered with some of the greats, this afternoon was known for more than the final score. Flamboyant Essendon hard nut "Fabulous" Phil Carman famously received a 20-week suspension for striking St.Kilda's Garry Sidebottom and then incredibly headbutting boundary umpire Graham Carberry after a verbal stoush.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Duperouzel 3, Sartori 2, Barker 2, Bromberg, McDonald, Stone, Herbert
Essendon: Watson 3, Robins 2, Marsh, Carman, Bennett, Daniher, Stoneham, Day, Madden

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Sarau 23, Bromberg 21, Cunningham 20, Sartori 20
Essendon: Neagle 27, Heard 21, Marsh 20

1980, we drew the last game of the H&A season to get off the bottom of the ladder. Round 16 & 17 we were leading both Richmond & Collingwood at the end of the first quarter, to eventually only losing to both teams by 152 points & 104 points respectively. Must have been some year!

Round 17, 1983
Date: 23rd July, 1983.
Location: Junction Oval
Crowd: 15,335

Led by Bernie Quinlan, Fitzroy had been a game clear on top of the ladder after Round 14 but even after successive losses to the Swans in Sydney (R15) and Carlton at Waverley Park (R16) they were still expected to bounce back strongly against Trevor Barker & the lowly Saints at the Junction Oval

The match produced a VFL record aggregate score for a quarter when Fitzroy (12.6) and St.Kilda (7.1) added 121 points in the second quarter. The Saints took the lead again with the wind in the third quarter but the margin of 20 points looked well within the Lions reach in such a high scoring encounter.

We now take you to the 2nd quarter of today's game.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Barker 5, Crow 4, Cross 3, Cunningham 2, Packham 2, Brown 2, Odgers, Meehan, Sidebottom, Foschini
Fitzroy: Quinlan 6, Harris 3, Sidebottom 3, Conlan 2, Wilson, Lokan, Carlson, Parish, Roos, Irwin

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Cunningham 29, Odgers 27, Elphinstone 22
Fitzroy: Wilson 24, Lokan 23, Coleman 21

Cracking hanger from Mad Dog Muir as well.

The round 12 game against Hawthorn in 1976 was the last game Mick Malthouse played for St Kilda. On the following Thursday he was cleared to Richmond.

Saints were crippled by injuries but still won. Barry Breen, Cowboy Neale, Carl Ditterich, George Young and Barry Lawrence were all missing.

Saints had a bloody good side. Underachieved that year.
