50 Years of the Saints - Countdown to NAB 1, 2017.

Early morning on Feb 1, foxfooty are showing the 65 and 66 grand final. Look out for Ken Fraser getting the cup in a Saints jumper.
Couldn't find the picture on the dias, but this one shows that he was part of the minority who sadly didn't make the trade.

I'm not sure if there were any other skippers who received the cup in opposition colours apart from the Doc.

Thanks for the effort but doing links to the herald sun is no good unless you are a subscriber.

I could see it and I'm not a subscriber. Figure out why, went through google rather than a direct link.

If you search the article title 'St Kilda players open up on their biggest regret from club's only premiership in 1966' and click on the Herald Sun article you'll be able to see it.

Is that really a photo of baldock with the guernsey's swapped back?

Also am I remembering right or not but wasnt Barry Breen the only one who forgot to swap his guernsey and still has the original?
I think Breen got his back - as did Des Tuddenham years later.

Image if that Geelong fullback that used to do torps to the centre before he went to play gridiron in America played back then and kicked the ball like he could. There would be a medal named after him and the commentary would whisper his name like a god . I can't remember his name , it's on the tip of my tongue . Actually if any of the modern players went back in time and kicked like they do now it would have been a shock. Although I wonder if the footballs have improved as well as the boots to make a big difference . It sure is funny to see the whole ground as a mud patch and nobody thinks it's unusual.

Ben Graham mate :)

Ian Stewart = jet.

How the hell did we trade him?

It's a long story, but he was replaced as Captain after the 1969 season and the differences between player and club became irreconcilable.

We swapped Stewie for Billy Barrot. But at the time there was talk he could've been swapped for Des Tuddenham, who had fallen out with Collingwood after a pay dispute and was stripped of their captaincy in 1970.

I suspect we would have won the 1971 flag with Tuddy. Maybe even 1972. But we'll never know.

It was a sad day when Ian Stewart left St Kilda.

Round 15, 1967
Date: 5th August, 1967.
Location: Moorabbin Oval
Crowd: 23,406

Today's game would be held at Moorabbin, with reigning premiers St.Kilda playing host to Hawthorn.

After reaching the pinnacle in 1966, the Saints came into the 1967 season as favourites for the flag, and heading into today's game they sat in 5th position, just outside the final four with 9 wins and 5 losses, having beaten Melbourne by 33 points the week before.

Hawthorn on the other hand were doing it tough. After finishing 9th (out of 12) in 1966, the Hawks had slumped to an abysmal 4 wins and 10 losses after fourteen rounds. Rookie Hawthorn full forward Peter Hudson was a glimmer of hope in a disappointing Hawthorn side, having kicked 4 or more goals in 7 of the 17 games he would play that year, finishing on 57 for the season.

Today however would be a challenge for St.Kilda full back Bob Murray, touted by many as the best full back in the game. Murray had his work cut out for him against the 21 year old Hudson, who had kicked 6 goals the week before in a dramatic upset win against flag fancies Geelong.

We resume play at the start of the 3rd term with St.Kilda leading 8.9 (57) to Hawthorn 3.6 (24)

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Ditterich 4, Roberts 2, Smith 2, Bonney 2, Davis 2, Breen 2, Mynott, Howell, Dyer
Hawthorn: Lester 3, Arthur 2, Hudson 2, Crimmins

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Stewart 27, Roberts 22, Ditterich 21, Smith 21, Mynott 21
Hawthorn: Keddie 21, Arthur 20, Angus 19

Date: 4th May, 1968.
Location: Moorabbin Oval

Reigning premier Richmond would travel to Moorabbin to take on the Saints in today's Round 4 clash. After beating Geelong by 9 points in the 1967 VFL Grand Final, the Tigers came out firing to open the season, heading into Round 4 with a 2-1 record, their only loss coming against Geelong in the Grand Final rematch the week before.

After a disappointing year in 1967, the Saints started the first three rounds at 2-1 as well, having beaten Melbourne by 56 points and Collingwood by 36 in round three, which on percentage had pushed the Saints to 2nd spot on the VFL ladder. A win today would see St.Kilda leapfrog Essendon and sit atop after four rounds.

Preliminary Final, 1971
Date: 18th September, 1971.
Location: Melbourne Cricket Ground
Crowd: 102,494

St.Kilda and Richmond sat in 2nd and 3rd position at the end of the 1971 season, respectively. Sadly for St.Kilda fans, two time Brownlow medalist Ian Stewart's relationship with then coach Allan Jeans wore thin at the end of 1970, with the midfielder clearly unhappy with his situation after Jeans had played him out of position on many occasions during the season. Stewart's displeasure becoming evident in the Saints final game of 1970 (Preliminary Final loss vs Carlton) in which he gathered only 12 possessions in a 62 point thumping. It was a sad day for St.Kilda fans when they heard of the news that Richmond had acquired one of the games best talents.

In exchange for the Brownlow medalist, St.Kilda acquired 120 game midfielder Billy Barrot - who only managed to play 2 games in 1971 before being traded to Carlton in the same year. Stewart would play his first game against his old club in Round 3 of the 1971 season, gathering 20 touches and kicking a goal as the Tigers won by 19 points, and would go on to win the 1971 Brownlow medal, but it was today's game where the Saints could have the last laugh.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Davis 6, Breen 3, Bonney 2, Theodore 2, Smith, Manzie, Galt
Richmond: Richardson 5, Cumming 2, Hart 2, Balme, Bartlett, Bourke

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Smith 25, Davis 24, Manzie 24, Trott 24, Besanko 23
Richmond: Clay 21, Bartlett 18, Bourke 18, Hart 16

Elimination Final, 1972
Date: 9th September, 1972.
Location: Waverley Park
Crowd: 52,499

After a narrow loss at the hands of Hawthorn in the 1971 Grand Final, the Saints were back in September action, the clubs third successive finals appearance.

Essendon had made a massive turnaround (after finishing the 1971 season in second last place), finishing in 5th position and securing a spot in the finals. This would also be former Collingwood captain Des Tuddenham's first season in the Red & Black, moving to the Bombers as captain-coach; much to the outrage of the Magpie army.

We now take you to Waverley Park in front of 52,499 fans.

GOALS:
St.Kilda: Stephens 4, Galt 3, Davis 2, Smith 2, Breen 2, Ditterich 2, Lawrence 2, Trott
Essendon: Blethyn 2, Roberts 2, Fields, Wilson, Parkes, Tuddenham, Noonan, Grinter

DISPOSALS:
St.Kilda: Trott 22, Stephens 21, Davis 19, Judson 19, Manzie 19
Essendon: Davis 22, Fields 21, Wilson 20

Geoff Blethyn with two for the Dons in the year that he topped the tonne. Surprising considering he looked like such a poindexter.

Former Essendon premiership coach Kevin Sheedy in the process of stealing Blethyn's lunch money.

GJ,
I'm loving these games.
John Bonney, John Manzie - what great players.
Big Carl dominating at CHF.
Cowboy manning Balme in the FP.
This game is different to those earlier: you can see the change to the modern game is underway.

But.........

Stephen Theodore.

What a beauty was he??

Definitely agree with you on the change in game!! Watching over these again it seems as though from 1970 onwards you notice a considerable change in the way the game is played - it's much more free flowing and less of a sloppy game. Great to watch, thanks for the post!

Some great stuff there. Was John Bonney cut down by knee injuries?

Doing some research I see we list some great players to other clubs. Should have won at least 2 in that era by the looks of it.

Yes, comparing that to 66. Massive difference. Skills were more refined.

Smith looked hard as concrete. Did he win a Charlie?
