Big Fish ?...Hawthorn trade news and targets thread(not for trade hypotheticals)

I don't know which thread to post this question in but this is pretty close so I'll do it here.

Say our approach to gaining players (treating draft, trade and free agency as mere tools none more valuable than the other except for the particular player opportunity they present) is correct (which I believe it is) and it works (which I believe it will). How long until other teams catch on and join the party? Unlike BF which resists every innovation like an old granny taping the radio dial to 3AW late night, I think teams will try to catch up fast.

I guess you could say that our Dingley facilities are the club staying one step ahead and moving three (or is it four now?) years before anyone figured out a large part of why they were building Dingley (destination club).

what do you mean by catch up? if your talking about moving on club greats and getting younger talent through trades then adding the best available drafted players then I think the Cats are a little in front in that regard. amazing to think that them letting go Stevie J, Kelly, Chappy etc. didn't quite hog the headlines as much as Sammy and Lewy!

Sammy and Lewy finished 1 and 2 in our BnF, then were traded, that's the reason for the headlines

I think that although it did sting when we traded them, there is no doubt it was the correct call for us going forward

100% agree with this. I think as sad as it is to see them go, we didnt get anywhere near back to how much we value them.

You guys already reeled in a massive carp called Vickery, i know carp are a bit smelly and don't fight very hard but at least they grow big like Vickery.

Carp fight very hard, particularly when they get to around 30 or 40 pounds, there are poms who spend their whole life chasing them as sporting fish and tell stories about the fight like they had moby dick on the line.
Vickery is better compared to a cat fish surely.

Indeed. Teams like GWS will need to keep most of it for when their countless stars come out of contract. If the cap is 20% higher surely every player manager is going to up their clients' asking price at least 20% starting immediately.

I think prudent clubs will keep most of that 2 million to prevent their players leaving on vastly higher offers over the next couple of years but there's always going to be a couple of reckless clubs who've traditionally botched list management (hello Richmond) who'll get sucked into the hype and throw megabucks at the next Daisy Thomas. It'll also encourage poor clubs (Norf) to bet the farm on big-name stars to keep the team somewhat relevant so members don't desert them, Josh Kelly wouldn't be their only target.

Given Chris Scott's history of topping up I also expect the Cats to use much of that 2 million to make a play for more mature-age mercs. Taylor, Lonergan & Mackie are cooked so they might make a play for Trengove. Be very interesting to see how much they pay Ablett too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some clubs renegotiating contracts early in order to compensate players that took less to hang around. The pain was shared when it was tight, the love is shared when it is loose. Or something like that. Maybe us.

How's this for a plan? We take half of the increase and share it around the stars who have sacrificed earnings to keep the team together. We take the other half, add it to our cap underspend, and by my back-of-the-envelope calculations, we have just about the same still available as other clubs running at full cap. We're able to protect our stars and still go after the big FA options who can't be protected in less well managed lists.

Golly, if I've worked that out correctly it's almost like we have a list management plan that includes more than drafting. Shucks. Who woulda thunk it?

I wanted to bump this comment to be clear that we have trade currency & we should use it!
I would also like to add Gunston to the list...
We need some serious help in list regeneration for the next premiership & I don't think any of he above can't be ruled out to get into the draft or target young players from other clubs.
There is no hiding from the fact that we've gone over the cliff!
Trade talk should be priority! Who can we offload to where & where are the kids to target.
Forget the big fish!
We need a wide net not a hook...
