Freo actually look a bit better these days. Wouldn't be surprised if he stays. There's even some hope

I used to hate Freo but my Brad Hill respect has travelled over there. In neutral games I'm barracking way more for them now. Brad just gives it his all - runs all day like a crazy man

I miss him.... (ffs).

Funny when we had him there were always posters on here who complained about his tackle numbers and contested ball numbers - Only now are people realising his value - and at 23/24 he was the youngest of our triple premiership players. Wouldn't surprise me if he took his game to the next level now. Guys like him and Scully at GWS are the ones who break open teams with their running ability

Some of us had been defending Hill and were deeply regretting his departure mind you. I always felt his pros greatly outweighed his cons. His delivery inside 50 is something we could desperately use at the moment.

Hehe honestly I think it was just one poster who used to complain (ad nauseum) about what he couldn't do. He just banged on about it so much that it may have given the impression of being a more popular viewpoint than it was.

I think pretty much everyone else got how he ran his opponent into the ground and how he was absolutely elite at delivering the ball inside 50.

What gives me the shytes is the repetitive complaints about the team being no good and playing so poorly because Mitchell and Lewis were traded. We're not missing them as much as Hill on so many levels. The most important being run, spread and carry and like mentioned he has at minimum 2-3 times the career left than the aforementioned duo.

The other thing is it was a required move as our midfield needed the quickest regeneration and they'd be taking the spots of 2 other youngsters. Instead of getting flogged we'd be suffering honourable losses. I'm ok with the path we've taken and I wouldn't be surprised if Gibbo and a couple of the other veterans started getting rested or general soreness struck later in the season.

Hill was a loss we didn't want for sure and we'd be better with him still around.

What we miss most with Lewis and Mitch is two leaders who didn't accept poor efforts, I don't think Smith, Shiels and Rough are the same as Hodge, Mitch and Lewis for ruthlessness

Now Rough is a beast and and you don't get to the level these blokes do by liking to lose. But Jordy, Sam, Hodge, Gibbo and Burgers absolutely hated losing, they'd kill themselves to not lose, possibly maim a team mate or two as well ;)

I'm hoping Smith and Shiels especially find their way as leaders.

For mine Smith talks the most, shows the most desire to lift the team, Rough is a calming influence, he's also a focal point when he is up and about.

Liam seems very quiet on field, aggressive to a direct opponent but not really pushing his team mates

Time will tell if we've got the right blokes but you need to give guys a chance to grow

While that is happening we are lacking those blokes that motivated the boys and led by example on the field

Hodge talks about Tom Mitchell in this manner. And you can see it in the way he plays.

However at the moment (and this shouldn't be expected of someone new to the club, who's still quite young) he isn't driving that in others, only himself

one thing that I find weird about Dustin Martin, usually when a high priced RFA doesn't sign up, there is one or two clubs that get mentioned throughout the season but he seems to be very tight lipped...hmm..interesting. imo, he is gonski.

Granted but most on here anointed shiels future captain etc when we were winning. Smith came as a shock and roughy well I haven't bothered opening a certain thread again after reading OP so you know that I believe he is a good choice as I'm pretty sure the players vote on this as well.

My point is that other than results nothing has changed regarding whether they're leaders or not. Yes Mitchell and Lewis may not have liked losing but looking at our off season I believe those two being the way they were also stifled the younger players' growth into leaders. The decision makers at our club realised we were in need of a regeneration and the 2 we got rid of were probably the most important to our competitiveness meaning the most valuable to possible suitors as well.

don't get me wrong I think we needed to move some senior players on and I will back the club on the choices

but it leaves a vacuum and it often takes players time to grow into the space left

I was not surprised by Smith getting the nod, he's shown enough

I was not surprised by Shiels getting the nod though I have been disappointed by what he has shown since

I was surprised, happily by the Rough appointment

I feel it is harsh to blame him for the situation. Hodge is Hodge and always will be, you can't compare

If Hopper is the target... would chasing Jackson Trengove or Sam Reid be fine?

I have Trengove as my voted player.
I think by the end of the year Chip will be looking vulnerable & in need of assistance.
I also think Brand could possibly be the better fullback option 2018 with his intercept marking & kicking better & Trengove would add some grunt as well as the skills off CHB.
Landing Trengove & Hopper still gives us room to add a runner (Whitfield) or another young targeted player without blowing the budget... well if we are bold at trade time & the cap is increased it could be 2 FA... the sky is the limit on BF;)
Bring in Trengove!
Sam Reid is interesting for me but I just can't see him at Hawthorn

I just don't see how we can do two big trades at all, it is possible to do one, unless we trade boldy, if not we can wait til next year for Whitfield.

Trengove would have to be either very homesick or money hungry to leave Port for Hawthorn right now.

Recruiting AVERAGE MEDIOCRE FREE AGENTS is recipe for mediocrity. Sam Reid fits smack bang in the middle of this lot
