What's Sam Reid's accuracy in front of goal like? I have an inkling that it's shaky at best, but not entirely sure. If we ended up with another momentum killing key forward like Cloke i'd not be particularly thrilled...

If he's even slightly above average I say go for it. Then i'd be happy to give our first round (and probably a little extra, Greenwood?) on May. That would have our spine looking pretty damn solid. Then we can look at drafting another KPF next year.

Gives us the options of May, Dunn, Shade and McLarty down back. And B Reid, S Reid and Moore up front. Given both the Reids can play either end it would give us great flexibility, and ability to cope with injury.

It fixes our deficiencies right now, rather than 4-5 years down the track when a drafted KPF would come into his own, and Pendles, Reid etc will be either less effective or retired. Also makes out age profile look a whole lot less lopsided in the spine.

It's concerning that 6 of his 15 has come from just one game, despite him spending some time in other parts of the ground this year. He's still played majority forward and doesn't seem to be getting many marks inside 50 and shots on goal.

Not unless there's significant shifts in either personnel or thinking within the FD. Playing personnel wise it would be promising!

When you have Buddy in the side he is going to attract the ball more than any player in the league and rightly so. However it makes for some joyless days for other forwards who are often operating as decoys and clearing space. It also makes for an unbalanced forward line although on paper it looks a million bucks - literally. Tippett, Buddy & Reid in their forward line do not work IMO.

This is the Swans own doing for loading up on big names, it squeezes others out in terms of contribution and also obviously salary cap. Reid will be better at almost any other club he goes to where he will be a bigger part of forward line plans.

Matthew Kennedy from GWS - will be starved of opportunity in a fit team up there, extremely talented, great kick of the footy, well liked by everyone in his junior days so would be a great kid to have around the club, he hits the scoreboard and he's out of contract. I want him a lot.

This goes both ways though, yes he'll get more opportunities elsewhere, but he'll also draw more attention.

At Sydney he might get the 2nd or 3rd best tall defender, at Collingwood for example, he'd probably get the best defender. One probably cancels out the other.
Nothing I've seen from him would suggest he'd suddenly take his game to a new level.

The logic in giving up a highly talented young midfielder in Degoey, prior to him reaching potential, in order to gain a very good but older key Backman who has reached potential; totally eludes me.
We give up to much.. what's the net gain? Free agency and good drafting, good player development and maximizing returns on peripheral players through trades are the ways we strengthen our list. Trading out good players to bring in good players has no net benefit. Just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Generally I agree with your stance on the issue and would prefer it not to be DeGoey. However, we have a number 'Peter's' and need a Paul.

I would prefer we found a different way of doing it and would hate it if we went that way, but we would be slighty diminishing a deep well to add to an almost empty one.

Darling is no world beater by any measure but he does his job every single week. You can always bank on him kicking 2-4 goals and taking an opposition defender off the premier tall. Darling also has very good hands - the 2015 Grand Final drop was nothing but a one-off situation.

Stats shmats. Stats have Jesse White and Leigh Brown neck and neck over their careers, but which one was regarded as a vital cog and which is a whipping boy? And what separated the two?

Darling falls in the White category for me. Obviously a much better player, but a pea heart who wouldn't have the fortitude to play as a CHF like you're suggesting. 3rd tall is his go, and I don't think that's what we need right now.
