As Adelaide Crows wait on Mitch McGovern and Jake Lever’s calls, the Lions take interest in contract forward-midfielder Charlie Cameron
ADELAIDE’S list-management team needs to counter Brisbane’s interest in contracted Crows speedster Charlie Cameron with a new deal - or a trade to avert being short changed in the 2018 drafts.

Cameron, 22, is repeatedly linked to the Lions as part of a move to be reunited with his family in Queensland despite having an AFL contract with Adelaide for next season. And with the doubt lingering on the Crows ability to keep out-of-contract pair Mitch McGovern and Jake Lever at the end of the season, the prospect of Cameron seeking an exit from West Lakes will further damage the Adelaide Football Club’s battle to avert being seen as a club that cannot keep its players.

Charlie Cameron of the Crows runs with the ball past Darcy Moore of the Magpies.
Cameron is another success story from Adelaide’s rookie system, rising from the rookie list at the end of the 2014 season when he played seven games. Originally from the WA football system, Cameron has become a regular of the Crows system, either as an opportunist forward or a gamebreaker with his speed in the midfield.

The Showdown at Adelaide Oval on Sunday marked his 67th AFL game in four seasons. Adelaide chief executive Andrew Fagan stood by the Crows’ standard response to not “react to all the speculation because we would spend all our time reacting to it”. “Those two guys (Lever and McGovern) are important to us,” he told TripleM. “And I promise we are doing all we can to keep the list together.”

Adelaide can put an end to the Cameron question - and that of its ability to hold players - by extending his contract beyond 2018 or use his current deal to engineer a lucrative trade with the Lions. Leaving Cameron to fall out of contract at the end of next year gives Adelaide less power at the trade table - and carries the risk of losing the young forward-midfielder with no return in the 2018 drafts in which Brisbane is still expected to hold early calls. Top-ranked Adelaide could close the season with the AFL premiership - and a major refit of its player list forced by hot bidding for its players.

Past years he had been a poor decision maker and did no damage. This year, he's a damaging midfielder who takes the game on and hits the scoreboard. Looking forward to the continued improvement.

Runs much straighter lines this year and is far more decisive helping him break the lines and put his pace to good use.

Think it's more due to the system around Taylor that is allowing him to be more damaging this year.
Definitely that's part of it. I think that he's often getting the footy as a result of quick and decisive ball movement which means fewer bodies around him. He can then use his natural evasiveness to best effect.

Some of the criticism about him going backwards, sideways, round in circles was justified. But I think it was learned behaviour because going forward often wasn't a valid option either because there was no one to kick to or because he was getting the ball in highly congested situations.

Agree. In the past he was often holding on to the ball more (hence going backwards, sideways, circles etc) and somewhat selfish compared to this year as well. Early this year he was given feedback about that specifically and that has helped his game dramatically. Was still prevalent early but now doesn't happen much at all. Next year he will be an even more improved player. (as a lot of others will as well)

Plain to see from day one he just never wanted to waste his ball use but was in a very poor team
He was part of that very poor team hence partly responsible. That's the responsibility Fagan has instilled in each player this year. Its a team game hence ONE FOR ALL & ALL FOR ONE.

In the earlier days he seemed to play behind the ball a bit more so there were always lots of bodies in front of him. Where i think this year inparticular he is playing forward of the ball and in much more space to begin with.

:thumbsu:
Nathan Fyfe- pick 20, 2009.
Patrick Dangerfield- pick 10, 2007.
Joel Selwood- pick 7, 2006.
Dustin Martin- pick 3, 2009.
Sam Mitchell- pick 36, 2001.
Marcus Bontempelli- pick 4, 2013.

Wow didn't know Fyfe and Danger were picked that late. Any knocks on them prior to drafting that explained it?

Danger was under age (harder to project performance) and wanted to finish off high school.
IIRC Fyfe had some injury concerns (?) and was basically a stick.

How do teams draft an underage player?

The draft cutoff used to be at the beginning or end of April (can't remember which) instead of at the end of the year, so clubs could draft guys who might still be finished school that year. It's changed since then so that the cutoff is at the end of the year.

Dont the saints still have Battle whos still at school at the moment? Maybe he was a late starter or held back a year though.

Even more embarrassing for Collingwood who gave us two second rounders for him

been mentioned quite a few times before...but we literally had no other option but to take Aish. He was actually quite a highly rated junior, if you have a look at the next 8 picks after him.

Luke McDonald- father son
Christian Salem- had go home issues all over him, has no set the world alight
Nathan Freeman- same go home issues and even worse than Aish
Dom Sheed- part of our deal to get pick 28 for Yeo was for us to take Sheed, could not have taken him
Ben Lennon- has been pretty awful
Cripps- was rated in the 20's-30's Carlton bit the bullet and had a crack but was not considered a top 10 talent
Cam McCarthy- our need for a key forward linked us to him but he had a pretty badly broken leg, and he also had go home issues as we know
Zak Jones- great player but was rated in the 20s Sydney went early on him

Its considered a good draft for talent that was picked up in the 2nd round onwards. Before AIsh only 3 players have shown to be potential A grade talents the others have been relatively underwhelming or had injury issues

either that or we just didn't want him/rate him?

big call for west coast to move from pick 6 to pick 11 if it was not the case

I think there was a bit of a Chad Wingard/ Elliot Kavanagh situation. He made it clear he wanted to go to a WA club.

Aby interest in Zaharakis? Still hasn't signed and has family in Brisbane.
Yeah would be good to get him but as jasonpm mentioned probably a bit too old.
I think you might be in the wrong thread though. I think you want the trade and F/A thread;)....... wait a minute:)
