as an odds person you should know that not every race is even. There are trainers who's horses are always better trained and placed better and therefore a better chance of winning the race, Geelong, Sydney, Hawthorn etc are all much shorter odds than that, Collingwood's are much worse, I would suggest going by history we are a $100/1 chance next year and maybe 30/1 the next year IF we improve next year, Together we might be 25/1 to win one in the next 2 years.
I would suggest if Malthouse was kept on in 2012 we would have been about a 4/1 chance to win, the following years, who knows, depends on what we recruited cos i an guarantee our side would be totally different compared to what we have now. What we did by appointing Buckley was change our odds from short to long. They are even longer now.
Sometimes thats a good plan for long term gain... unfortunately this did not work out, as our previous history has told us.
so we took Collingwood off Bart Cummings and gave him to Jim Marconi...

Do you reckon those odds might have been pushed out a bit by the unavoidable injuries and Jmac's passing?

Jmacs passing is an intangible. Adelaide lost their coach and it didn't seem to affect them. Injuries? didn't affect (effect) the dogs last year. as for setting the odds. i was setting them pre what happened, thats why they are odds!! i dont bet on football but i do on the ponies...

Adelaide also lost a full yr of draft picks after the Tippet saga.. where the frog are they? On top!!!

Jim only trained a few at a time, his own pretty much, has a few beauties, Taras Bulba, Cossack Prince spring to mind. Taras Bulba would be his best Horse I'd suggest, something like 5 group 1s (might be 4 but 5 is my guess including AJC Derby.)

Nathan a bit more like a young trainer given medium bred types with a few two year olds still in the paddock.

Only missed finals in 95 by one game. All Nathan had to do was back himself and roost it on Anzac Day and kick a point. He choked and tried to pin point Rocca. That's 2 points right there. I've heard. It's quite probably true. If so it proves he knew what he SHOULD have done and didn't. At that time he should have done what was most likely to win Collingwood the 2011 flag if he is to be considered to always put the club ahead of himself. He's entitled to stick to the deal and have confidence in what he could achieve as coach in the future but that isn't putting himself behind the club.

There may have been variables other than his wishes at play. Perhaps MM wasn't able to continue due to break down in relationships.

Didn't seem to affect them? They cancelled the game! 2012 will always be looked at by the results of those finals and rarely about the circumstances surrounding them.

The Collingwood boys attended Jmac's funeral on Thursday and boarded a plane for Sydney that night. They could have been forgiven for not turning up at all the next night, but they did and played through despite clearly being affected by the circumstances and the emotional toll from the previous week.They went down valiantly to the eventual premiers but unfortunately it will forever be remembered as another year that Buckley failed.

The old money types saw their team miss the finals on Sunday night. At least that was something we can take away from the season.
