Why is the answer to "Which club did this crappy thing back then?" always Carlton?

I must admit, when I read how much South Melbourne benefited from Geelong's temporary absence (they got a good forward who got them up the ladder) I thought they'd be one of the teams that resisted Geelong's return; I had little mental swear when I read that the only team understood to have actually resisted Geelong's reintegration into the competition was Carlton.

I'm also thinking of the time they tried to kick us out and generously offered to play all their away games at the SCG.

He answered a question that a poster who is actually active has been waiting 6 years to find out

I reckon they sat there all that time just waiting alone.

I had actually forgotten about this but thanks for the answer General, mystery solved.

Still ****s me off to this day how the four clubs tried to raise money for the patriotic fund in the 1916 season.
Then pocketed between 83 and 100% of the donations.

The despicable selfish acts make me believe that Collingwood Richmond Carlton and Fitzroy should be kept well clear of any Anzac Day games.

Seriously.
Let's use Collingwood as an example, change it to a modern day cause, and take inflation into account.

1916- Collingwood raises £664 for the patriotic fund.
Take inflation into account, north Melbourne raise $64,865 for the women's and children's hospital on good Friday

Yet, after taking their amount for "expenses" only £40 gets to the patriotic fund
That'd be like north pocketing $60,957 only giving the women's and children's hospital a little under $4,000 because it cost the, $60k to run the charity drive.

Not as bad as Carlton who pocketed every last shilling they raised. But it's still bad enough to the point that I won't reward these teams with anything.

Give us Essendon vs Melbourne on Anzac Day ffs.

I don't think you're appreciating just how contentious and divisive World War I was at the time. It caused an entire political realignment, with one of the two major political party splitting and the other merging with the splitters into an entirely new party. The opposition to the war was extremely deeply felt, and the poverty in those suburbs was severe. I'd be less angrywith the clubs and more with the politicians who sent young people to needlessly die for no sound reason, and continue to do so.

The thing I've never known is when did Carlton go from being the working class Catholic club of the early days to its reputation now of being a more blue blood club? I get having Menzies and John Elliott being closely tied to the club would be part of it, but am not sure what changed - especially given the shifting of Carlton into a more Italian migrant heavy suburb would have made it more of a Catholic working class team. Wondering if anyone has an answer!

Once the concreters, tilers, fruiterers and mechanics began making a profit ;)
