Happy for you to show me where I wasn't fully supportive of Dane Swan.

.... you are missing the point.
At year 2 of Dane's career, he was wallowing in the reserves and had beaten up a cleaner in fed square.
The only reason he wasn't delisted is because Mick rated him.

On the other hand, Philips is a rising star nominee and tracking very nicely.

For some reason, Bigfooty has grown so impatient.

And therein lies our problem!! What you say is broadly true, Phillips disposal is probably no worse then Adams, Treloar, Crisp and Greenwood. But that is NOT a good thing or an argument in Phillips favour. Quite the contrary, its an indictment on why he is not that useful a player for us! We are a team who generally win the contests, win the inside 50s, but our conversion once inside 50 is one of the worst in the league, and that is why we just finished 13th. Why? Well one of the main reasons is that we have too many blokes who can't hit the side of a barn. Too many who can't lower the eyes, pinpoint our forwards, kick it to our advantage. That is why our win:loss ratio is so much better with Wells in the team, he is one bloke who can use the pill.

So I am afraid Phillips just exacerbates our major problem: poor ball use. For me Treloar and Adams are selection locks, but after that, how many other poor disposers can you afford to have in the team? Crisp, Greenwood and Phillips are all handy players, but we just can't afford to play all 3 of em, unless we are happy with 13th on the ladder...Id argue we really have to make a choice and only play one of em...

I'd prefer Philips over both Greenwood and Crisp.

I said he was vanilla not soft.

He doesn't excel at the contest either but that's not my problem with him. My problem is he lacks leg speed and hurt factor.

People say the Same about Aish
Yep, but Aish can't find the ball either so he's got the whole trifecta.

He is more composed with ball in hand than Phillips though.

I can't tell if we've been so quiet on the rumour front because we are really inactive or if it's just because Pert isn't there spoon feeding information out. I'd like to think it's because we're finally playing our cards close to our chest. Whatever it is it's made for a boring pre trade and draft period so far this year.

Nah, got the point. Could see something in Swanny, even from his 1st year.

As I say, I'm generally very positive about our players to the point I'm generally labelled as a champion of all things Collingwood. Phillips just doesn't do it for me. If he stays and corrects the aspects of his game that frustrate me, fine, if he opts for more money elsewhere, fine. Be disappointed if we were looking at investing any more than $300k in him.

What is ceiling anyway? What we guess is somebody's potential.
Let's just accept that neither of us have any idea what any player's actual ceiling is.

Would you have guessed that Dane Swan's ceiling was a brownlow in his first 3-4 years?

Just to add, I reckon we tend to get potential totally wrong. Often we seem to view potential as all about pace and flashy risk taking skills. Early in their careers guys like Sam Mitchell and Josh Kennedy (Swans) were seen as guys with limited potential for improvement due to being medium to slow paced mids who don't burst from traffic.Obviously they have gone on to become 2 of the very best of their generation.

The way I see it, Phillips has a lot of boxes ticked already and appears to have the work ethic to tick the other boxes. I'd be surprised if he doesn't become a quality AFL player who enjoys a long career.

I hope you are right, as he is close to resigning.

For me he lacks power, which can definitely be trained into him so no big disaster...struggles to maintain his speed.

One concerning trait though is he appears to be a panic merchant, not sure if that because he's soft or because he just panics and turns the ball over. Not so good in traffic, very outside which is fine because we have plenty of ball winners

I could live with his offensive game issues if he had a defensive game or at least some game awareness.

Sublime posting right here.
The kid seems to have a great attitude and fantastic work ethic.
I'm backing him in.

Good Point. Aish most of the Time Struggles to get 20 Touches. IF He could get to at least average around 20 then I think he be in the best 22

False. Don't make stuff up please.

"That'll be sorted in the next week or two I reckon. Obviously the preference is to be at Collingwood but I'm letting the manager sort that out at the moment," Phillips told AFL.com.au at this month's NAB AFL Rising Star ceremony.

To Me that Sounds like his Manager might be taking Offers.

I reckon it's possibly something like this. Although I always thought it was Ed who was feeding Damo (a fellow channel 9 and MMM employee) with information so he can actually break a story here and there. I assumed that's where he got his information from with the Adam Treloar situation.

That and hopefully our main targets like Devon Smith, Adam Tomlinson and Jake Lever etc are still in the finals.

Or maybe we're just getting noone!

I can't be stuffed going into a lot of detail on this but there were a lot of games this year that we should have won.

GWS, Adelaide, QB.... All games we were well in front and choked.
We should have also beaten Carlton.

I can't think of many games (apart from the Carlton match, anzac day and the port games) that we weren't in up to our eyeballs.
A 5% increase of performance and we will easily win the extra 5 games needed to play finals.
This will hopefully just come from growth of our youth.. DeGoey, Philips, Moore, Scharenberg, Maynard, Daicos, Kirby, Brown.
There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

I agree. I spoke with a Carlton mate of mine and he says they lost an extra game this year compared to last, but there's no doubt in my mind they are on the improve. I think we're exactly the same and just a small improvement is all that's needed for us to win a bunch of extra games and make the 8.

The year after that we'll be in a good spot with the development of our kids. We were in most games this year bar a few.

Barrett, Stevens and co probably get 90% of their “mail” from the BF Trades and Rumours threads, and the other 10% offering the junior club scouts a couple of pineapples or some Whiz Fiz for a nugget of info.

There wouldn't be a manager alive who'd ignore an enquiry about 1 of his players. As I interpret it, we have an offer on the table but it appears his manager might think he can get more $$$. If he signs, he signs, if he doesn't, hopefully we get something decent for him. I hope the club doesn't get sucked into paying too much for a guy I doubt will ever be any more than a fringe player.

It sounds like it to you? Where in that bolded post did he actually say he's looking at other offers, like you specifically said below?
He has not Re-Signed and saying his is looking at other offers
If you want to jump to your own conclusions that's fine, but don't spread false info based on your assumptions.

It was probably more this paragraph below that sounded like he was actually weighing up his options. But yeah probably all just “smoke and shadows behind the windows” to make it look like he’s bailing so they can squeeze a few extra bucks or an extra year out of the Pies:

"I wanted to play out the rest of the season. We'd been in talks for a little while now but I just wanted to get the season done and now I've got a bit more thinking time to really process and negotiate and weigh up where I'm at."

Could also just be a poor choice of words. So probably nothing for us to get razzed up about.

Call his bluff, I reckon.
