Underwhelming but hopefully we can get the best out of him.

Hi those stats are really skewed. Impey isn't a perfect player heck I'd say he's a below average AFL player at this point.

But I'd say about 10-15 of those 40 games there were played in the backlines which skews the goals total a bit. Nevertheless I think 0.8 goals a game is about average for AFL small forwards.

impey is the biggest ball burner we have, his speed is great but he also has trouble finding the ball because his footy IQ is limited. I find it strange for Clarkson to even want Impey if his idea is to play him as a line breaker because when he gets it it usually comes back the other way straight afterwards. If i were Clarkson i would certainly use Impey as a replacement for Poppy and maybe even in a tagging role in the midfield where he could also use his speed to break free from the stoppage at times.

Just remember that Impey is contracted for another year. It increases what Port can ask for. Not to 2018 first rounder territory, but perhaps more than pick 32 this year.
Its a pity Wright didn't realise that Hill was still contracted last year.

Sounds like a poorer version of Will Langford.

I like Will, but he can be frustrating.

Dear oh dear.

What is wrong with us. Why on earth would we be trying to prize away Jarman Impey while under contract... it is crazy stuff. I recall him playing a good game against us once but strike me pink Jarman Impey. Yikes.

Wait until next season and we get him for a pick in the 60s if we really want him and now we it will cost us a player or pick 32.

If we waste pick 32 for Jarman Impey I will be astounded.

Maybe he is the smokescreen perhaps for something bigger???

Code for Jarman's Impey (translation Darren Jarman's youngest son who is 12yrs old and dominating the SANFL under a pseudonym)?

Impey has nominated Hawthorn.
So this is the big fish we've been rumored to land! :drunk::rainbow:

I rate Impey. I hope the club gets him. I think he was taken in the same draft as Hartung about a few picks before him.

Impey might not be used as a small forward for next year, more likely to be playing on the wing or even in defense.

Impey has some serious X factor but doesnt get enough of the ball (seems to play well in the wet) and to often will turn it over when kicking forward

Interesting read regarding the Tom Gillies attempted trade in 2012. Can't help but feel that we dodged a massive bullet there as I credit Brian Lake as being the single most contributing factor to the 3peat. His presence at full back just straightened up the entire team and was the difference between us being pretenders and serious contenders. I highly doubt Gillies would have had the same effect.

'I could be Brian Lake': Ex-Cat's lament

Marc McGowan October 8, 2017 8:00 AM

The reason? It could have been him.

Gillies' AFL career was a classic case of sliding doors, where one decision cost him potentially winning a premiership and instead left him playing for one of the worst teams in recent history.

The scenario was this: at the end of 2011, the Hawks offered Gillies a lucrative three-year deal, but Geelong had him and refused to trade despite Gillies playing only eight games in three seasons.

The then-21-year-old defender, who was full-back in the TAC Cup's 2008 Team of the Year, managed just five more matches in the 2012 season – and the Cats subsequently delisted him.

Melbourne gave him an AFL lifeline, and he played in the first two rounds for a 79-point loss to Port Adelaide and a 148-point defeat to Essendon. Gillies was never seen again at AFL level.

Meanwhile, Lake, a dual All Australian with the Western Bulldogs, joined Hawthorn a year after the Gillies deal fell over, for the start of a historic flag three-peat between 2013 and 2015.

The 195cm backman won the Norm Smith Medal in the first of those Grand Finals to make his experience even more memorable.

Gillies' manager at the time, Tim Hazell, of Vivid Sports (then Velocity Sports), told AFL.com.au this week that things would have been different in the current trade environment.

"Hawthorn was looking for someone to play on the gorillas, and I remember thinking it was a really good opportunity for Tom," Hazell said.

"We were open and honest with Geelong, but, unfortunately, it got put down pretty quick.

"Back then, allowing a player to move while under contract was frowned upon. Now, we would have just forced the matter and got it done."

So, where did it all go wrong?

Hale would still be better than him.

I'm happy to go after Jarman, only 22 and fits the model.

Impey offers us the burst and line breaking that we lost with Hill. Other than Cyril and to a lesser extent Smith we don't have players with acceleration off the mark. Impey has Jason Johannisen-esque 0 to 100 speed which would be very handy in the midfield or in defense. Obviously his disposal isn't where it needs to be but I presume that Clarko and Wrighty either have a plan to offset this limitation or think they can improve him (a dangerous presumption that hopefully they aren't making given the Vickery experiment).

I was watching this couple of youtube clips on Joel Garner and i was thinking about how much he remains me of Hodge with the way he goes about it!

Than i come across this nice little read.

Garner is left-footed, supremely tough, is the traffic conductor at half-back and may as well have the word ‘leadership’ tattooed’ across his forehead.

Remind you of anyone?

Yep, Garner has been compared to Luke Hodge for a reason and you only have to watch him for five minutes to work out why.

He patrols contests, goes hard when he needs to but above all is never flustered and rarely rushed. He also tackles to hurt.

At quarter-time and three quarter-time, Garner addressed the players before coach Jason Broadbear did, further illustrating his leadership credentials.

“The fact Joel joined us in year 10 means he has made a big impression in a relative short period of time,” Scotch’s head of indigenous programs Rob Smith told Leader newspapers recently.

“He makes people feel valuable.”

It was noteworthy that Garner played almost exclusively in defence.

Maybe that’s where the team needed him, but more likely that’s his long-term future.

Either way, the Melbourne Grammar forwards let him run wherever he pleased.

At 183cm and 81kgs, he still has some filling out to do but his legs are sturdy and he has a distinctive pigeon-toed gait.

Garner also possesses lightning quick hands and terrific balance, which means he rarely gets caught with the ball.

Late in the third quarter he harnessed his inner Hodge, picking the ball up at half-back and banging it on his boot for a perfect torpedo.

There are plenty of players to watch in this year’s crop and Garner is undoubtedly one of them.

Our next young Hodge would be nice, if only somehow we can make this happen I'll be very happy

I don't get excited about two minute highlights and all the clap-trap that goes with picking out a future star but, I was extremely impressed with those clips, looks a likely type, exactly what Clarko would be looking to add to our list. Yep, I'm on the Garner train, MUST get!

Joel Garner Notes:
Good in space & physically competitive.
Terribly slow decision maker in congestion, especially w hands.
Needs time & space to excel.
Elite kick.

Pick according to draft strength:
Weak: 15-25
Regular: 25-45
Strong (2001/2018): Late pick or Rookie.
