Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but there are now only 12 players remaining on our list from our wooden spoon year only two years ago before SOS took over.
Murphy, Kreuzer, Cripps, Docherty, Casboult, Jones, Graham, Simpson, Rowe, Byrne, Thomas and Curnow.
SOS has truly gutted this list to its bare foundations in order to create his masterpiece, a remarkable job from the great man.
On the demise of MM, with 3 years of random drafting, except for the disastrous 2014 trading/draft pointedly designed to save MM's job, it was clear that apart from Cripps, every other player on the list was tradeable or, if not, disposable in any sensible rebuild.
We have in the main received good value from our trades and there is no one we have delisted that I regret letting go (however much I regret the player didn't make it). This was not the case in the past, I was filthy in particular that Laidler walked.
Of the players we have kept all of them (except Daisy) have a continuing value to us in our search for a flag. I do not believe any argument needs to be made for the retention of Murphy, Kreuzer, Docherty, Caz, Jones, Simpson, Byrne or Ed, each of whom I would love to play 25/26 games for us next year.
Graham has not done enough to be in our best 22 next year and any hopes he might improve to become a certain first's player have long dimmed. Nevertheless there is a place for him on the list as an experienced back-up mid. He is not a good centre clearance winner but he tackles well. He is saved by the fact that we have already lost 13 on the list and keeping some continuity, particularly someone in his age bracket, has list-building advantages.
I do not know the ins and outs of the decision to keep Daisy. The statement by Daisy early in the season to not hold us to the trigger clause enabling him to be picked or dropped in 2017 without controversy was very good for the Club. The speculation would have been damaging to the Club's image as a destination. On merit Daisy should have been delisted as there should be no place for him in the senior side in 2018, almost irrespective of injuries. The other factors that saw him get a 1 year extension? Who am I to judge?
Finally, whilst I agree with you SOS has done a terrific job in the rebuild thus far, I am not quite ready to now call the result a masterpiece, let alone it being his. I will wait until the object of the exercise is achieved (having a flag-winning side), and then there will be plenty of backs to slap when that happens. Though no doubt it is unlikely SOS's contribution would be forgotten.
