And in the Phantom draft they did earlier in the week he had us taking Stephenson @ #5 and Collingwood taking Fogarty at the very next pick ;)

Our club seems notoriously tight lipped pre draft - I wouldn't read too much into anything yet. Everyone was guessing last year and it seems the same this year.
All clubs should be tight lipped before a draft

I think clubs these days are way more tight lipped than they used to be. I remember the days where Emma Quayle would nail the top 13 or 14 every year. Now noone seems to be able to get even the top 7 right

Are people really writing off Rayner based on a time trial after an injury lay off

It seems we are too focussed on athleticism now days instead of pure football ability, This guy is a burst player, and the bursts can be devastating leading to multiple goals.

I seriously doubt the recruiters would be sweating on that trial before judging a player

Then again I don't lay claim to know what the club recruiters think, so maybe we get UDL at #2 and Rayner slides to #5

Will be gutted to miss out on Fog but I can live with those picks

Story in the age today covered half a dozen clubs. This regarding the dockers:

FREMANTLE

Draft picks: 2, 5, 42, 60, 66, 70, 77, 80, 90.

KEY DEFENDERS: Joel Hamling, Alex Pearce, Griffin Logue, Michael Johnson.

SMALL/MEDIUM DEFENDERS: Nathan Wilson, Lee Spurr, Cameron Sutcliffe, Tommy Sheridan, Luke Ryan, Ryan Nyhuis, Ethan Hughes, Tayin Duman.

MIDFIELDERS: Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale, Michael Walters, David Mundy, Brad Hill, Stephen Hill, Connor Blakely, Danyle Pearce, Ed Langdon, Brady Grey, Darcy Tucker.

KEY FORWARDS: Cam McCarthy, Shane Kersten, Matt Taberner, Brennan Cox, Michael Apeness.

SMALL/MEDIUM FORWARDS: Harley Bennell, Brandon Matera, Hayden Ballantyne.

RUCKS: Aaron Sandilands, Sean Darcy, Luke Strnadica.

Fremantle stared down Gold Coast and managed to procure pick two for the departing Lachie Weller in the dying minutes of the trade period, an outstanding result given they'd lost a highly talented young midfielder. It's a bit of a cliche, but the Dockers hold the keys to the draft given they have two picks inside the top five, a position of rare power for a club other than Greater Western Sydney in recent years. IThe Dockers lack ruck depth but no rucks in this draft look good enough to take so early. The expectation of late is that the Dockers will take Luke Davies-Uniacke at pick two, with the well balanced and powerful midfielder looking like the kind of player who could slot straight into Ross Lyon's first-round team and make a difference. Pick five is a bit less clear. The recent talk that Andy Brayshaw could go to Brisbane at pick one has been a bit of a curveball, but if the Lions opt for Cameron Rayner or Paddy Dow then Brayshaw could head to the Dockers, with the prospect of Haileybury pair Davies-Uniacke and Brayshaw venturing to Perth together appealing. Fremantle also have a handful of late picks and there has been some chatter that they could draft Hamish Brayshaw as well. Local boy Aaron Naughton has been linked to Fremantle's pick five but that would probably be a reach for the tall defender, especially given they took Logue early last year and still have young Alex Pearce on their books. With Zac Clarke and Jon Griffin gone it's not hard to envisage Fremantle picking a mature ruckman as a late pick or rookie. It's understood they showed interest in long-time Melbourne back-up Jake Spencer during the year.

The part in bold is a great point. Reduces the go home factor a lot if you draft 2 team mates in LUD and Brayshaw if available.

Although Rayner has to be your pick if he is there. He is the standout star.

I just hope that if Rayner is available, you don't let Carlton get him. Brisbane would be crazy not to get him but you never know.

Every draftee I have heard interviewed and asked the question : Who for number 1? They have all said they would pick Rayner. Proven match winner. Doesn't need a lot of possessions to turn the game.
Stamina is his only downside and also one of the easiest things for the club to improve, as long as he is dedicated.

Re: Rayner 7:55 for 2km isn’t great but he has got improvement in him if he has been out injured for a few months.

Watching the clips of the top prospects Rayner stands out to me as the most impressive. His least impressive game at the Carnival he still kicked a lazy 6 goals.

My prediction for quite some time is LDU at 2 and Brayshaw at 5, but if Rayner is overlooked by Brisbane I’d back him in with the upside of improved fitness.

I have been assuming forever that Rayner will go #1 and like you predicting we'd get LDU and Brayshawbut that time trial has got to be making Brissie shit their daks, they desperately need a 100% cert at pick 1. LDU has to be a red hot chance to go at #1 now

Dow then and maybe Brayshaw. Still can't go wrong

I’m intrigued to see how we’ll choose if LDU goes at #1. I’d probably go Dow. IMO Brayshaw will slide to #5 and we’d be crazy not to take him there. Use the rest of our picks on forwards and a ruckman. I’ve been hot on LDU and Brayshaw for a long time now and hope that’s how the chips will fall for our first two picks.

It’s hard to split Rayner, LDU and Dow so if we choose Dow at 2 then nothing wrong with that. We will end up with Cerra or Brayshaw at 5. Bring on the draft I say.

If we're keen on LDU and Brayshaw then if either of them go at 1 we use pick 2 on the other.

Simples.

We can't be keen on both, have LDU go at 1 and then 'hope' Brayshaw is still there at 5.

Obviously our recruiters will have a few scenarios and as such we'll need a back up 3rd interest and possibly a 4th.

I don’t think we need a backup, we just order our preference of Rayner, LDU, Dow, Cerra, Brayshaw and pick best available at our picks. The two other players I’d consider at #5 is Fogarty and Stephenson but I’d prefer two of the above.

You've basically said what I meant.
Only i'm saying we want LDU and Brayshaw.

So our order is LDU, Brayshaw etc etc.

Hence the need for a 3rd and 4th preference.

First time poster here I have been reading the forums for a while now and decided to chime in. Ever since I saw the Hunter Clark tomorrow's heroes and they had a snippet of LDU talking he mentions they have been best friends for a long time....I'm thinking if we got LDU with pick 2 we may reach for Clark at 5. Seems like a Freo-esque curve ball draft.

Not crazy but ???another half back type ??? Has some midfield cred , A bit like a racehorse trainer buying the stablemate just for companionship when he really would prefer the the horse from another stable for the same price

I actually like look the look of Clark, he’s been touted as the best ambidextrous kick in the draft, not sure we’d pass Brayshaw/Cerra/Stephenson at Pick 5 for him though is the thing.

He wants it and in an AFL system he'll have it. Why is that difficult to understand? Your tank will build in an AFL environment, the club will force you to be fitter. D. Pearce struggled early with us fitness wise, now hes fine, were we questioning his commitment then?
Its easier to work with people who have intrinsic motivation. He clearly hasn't gotten off his arse in 3 years when all of our other options have. There are a lot of really good options to choose from, so why make work for ourselves. What I actually do find difficult to understand is why you have come to the conclusion that it has to be him that we take and are looking for every excuse to excuse him.
