I think our first choice forward-line will involve a mix of Hawkins, surrounded by fast defensive forwards and our tall resting midfielders as secondary marking options (Dangerfield, Menegola, Cockatoo).

I cant for the life of me understand why the club would even consider picking up Hayball as a rookie over Ruggles, Hayball will never make it as an AFL player whereas Ruggles has had some solid games at the level already plus is a hard nut.

Menzel is week to week with his knees and may not last long in afl for that reason and Black and Stanley will both be 27yo OOC fringe players who i expect will likely be traded/delisted in 12 months time, none of the 3 of them should have any bearing on our list mgt strategy re tall forwards. (I am not a huge Crameri fan i just disagree with your reasoning there).

I personally prefer the 1 tall plus smalls setup you suggest but we would have to change our ball movement a lot in pre season to do that, the way we mainly kick long currently requires a 2nd KPF for that gameplan.

If Gregson and McCarthy along with Ablett are right to go then with Cocky and Parfitt you have a small forward brigade.

given that we were decimated with injuries to the small forwards last season we didn't have a choice. I do like Hawkins, rotating Danger / Ablett and the balance smalls.

There's not much distinction between the senior and rookie lists now, as rookies don't need to be upgraded to play. I think this draft actually runs pretty deep, and drafting Crameri, even as a rookie, when he's 30 next year could well cost us an 8-10yr quality player. I'd prefer to take a punt on smokies like Lloyd Meek, Alex Martini, and even guys like Harry Petty (SA MVP) are going to potentially going to be available late in the draft.

I doubt Menzel will play 10 games next year.
We get 2 seasons out of Crameri for very little and start grooming youth.
Spend a bit on decent talls or draft earlier, any wonder we have nothing.

I just don’t think we are good enough with our ball movement/disposal to pull off the small forward line thing, and bitchmond are just a flash in the pan anyway. We have been too small as it is down there over the last few years, or at least have lacked another quality tall. Besides, it’s not like we have a plethora of quality small forwards.

On a related note, and this won’t be popular, but I see no reason why the Taylor fwd experiment won’t continue next season. I am not necessarily for or against this (he did ok on occasion, was poor at other times), but we did nothing to address our tall forward issues during the trade period (despite there being some genuine options up for grabs) and, despite the retirements, we still have more depth in tall defensive types than we do down forward. Perhaps it has been stated somewhere that Taylor will return to defence fulltime, but otherwise I think we might all just be assuming that this is what will happen. Personally, I think there is still a gaping hole to be filled key fwd, and Stanley ain’t good enough and buzza still has a long long way to go.

Yeah exactly, and the mail I've heard is Crameri's hips are gone, and will barely make it on the park at all.

I'm not interested in Crameri. Seems like unnecessary depth that won't be a difference maker and I'd rather play Buzza or Black.

I think next year we'll probably play Hawk, Menz, resting mid and smalls. 2-3 marking targets and good ground skills. Sometimes augmented with Buzza, Black, Stanley depending on matchup.
