When Watergate first broke and the Democrats sued and everyone said the same thing, "this is a dumb strategy, why would someone who holds the most powerful office in the world resort to illegal schemes to keep that office".

The lawsuit did 2 things, it gave them money from their opposition (Trump 101 playbook) and secondly it kept the scandal in the public eye which gained momentum over time which led to Nixon's resignation.

At the end of the day Nixon was gone and the DNC won the case (and the money) and at the next federal election they won the presidency. Hmmm.

My problem is that any time spent on this stuff is time not spent talking about how he lied about ridding Washington of corruption and talking about how he is just GW Bush 2.0.

I used to think the same (re twitter) until recently, but can see his reasoning now. Spelling mistakes are a good way of getting extra attention. It also appears that the Trump team has been communicating using 4chan/8chan (weaponized autism!) to bypass the media.

Yep ok that's exactly what they are doing and the only explanation ive been reading and hearing that makes any sense.

Can't say expecting history to repeat itself is a good stragedy myself,the Dems would be better off focusing on other things,but i ain't writing the script and shitshow that is US politics

History always does repeat, it's just that our surroundings/circumstances are different (I believe).

It's what fascinates me about this whole thing, I love history (I'm not a teacher) and I think we are really watching history unfold before our eyes.

I think it's all about Cohen, I believe they have real criminal charges on him and with the threat of enough jail time he'll flip.

If that's the case then I don't think anything else matters, this is why Guiliani has been bought in. He has history and a lot of close contacts in the Manhattan offices and Trump is hoping he can work some magic there.

Again back on the history theme but one of Nixon's closest ally's flipped which led to his downfall.

Looking at history is critical to understand the present. Unfortunately we have for quite some neglected history and as a result we are very prone to misreading situations and using history merely to justify our own preconceived emotional beliefs.

So a number of Democrats draw parallels to Nixon and watergate.

But history says quite the opposite
The repercussions for Nixon are an historical aberration. This was a black swan event.

Most Presidents have been accused with good cause of far more than Nixon.

Moreover in the recent decades extraordinary crimes by presidents and their administrations have been
Overlooked.

I would welcome the kind of accountability you are hoping for - but the USA is well past that point.

There are far too many on all sides who do not wish to have that Pandora’s box open.

The Democrats wont push for Impeachment as Trump in 2020 gives them the best political shot at the Presidency. If Pence does get in then he can dial everything back for a strong run at 2020.

Last week the FBI released the original “electronic communication” (EC) documents that underpinned the origin of the FBI counterintelligence operation. The first half of this interview contains some stunning information: the raw intelligence product within the EC did not come through official intelligence channels.

Meaning, the origin of the 2016 counterintelligence operation, which was specifically started by CIA Director John Brennan sharing his ‘raw intelligence product’ with the FBI, was not an official product of the U.S. intelligence community. Brennan was NOT using official partnerships with intelligence agencies of our Five-Eyes partner nations; and he did not provide raw intelligence -as an outcome of those relationships- to the FBI.

The questions, many of which are rhetorical against the backdrop of political motives, become: if the EC is not based on official intelligence from U.S. intelligence apparatus or any of the ‘five-eyes’ partners, then what is the origin, source and purpose therein, of the unofficial raw intelligence? Who created it? And why?

Possibly. It may be that the Chinese have put the finger on rocket man. If he kept going the likely 'stouche' on the Korean peninsula would be very damaging to China.
Trump has a whole host of conflicts going, both national & international. I guess some think he's in control. A lot think he's a dangerous egomaniac who is simply starting lots of fires to hide other 'blazes' he's involved in.
Brinkmanship is dangerous at that level of power. You've only got to get it wrong once.
