There's plenty of youth. We are getting the odd goal kicked simply by the opposition breaking tackles.

Somewhere during that period of play where Collingwood were building from insurmountable lead to blowout, I saw two in a row.

Collingwood went from facing away from goal on a wing to half forward flank to streaming into the forward 50m with plenty of space and running targets to hit. Broken tackle, handball, broken tackle.

The effort to tackle was there, the hands grabbed the body but all it took was a couple of shrugs and 180 spins and our lads were left clutching fresh air.

Do you honestly think the youth policy is out the window?

No, but I do think Ballantyne is massively overrated by our football department. He's done nothing for years, his continued selection is ridiculous and there's no justification for playing Hughes at Peel and playing Ballantyne in the AFL.

Hughes from all accounts is playing like shit

These "accounts" come from people who are proven nuffies, the same people who were last year saying that Taberner was playing like shit and should be delisted when he was kicking 5 goals a game at Peel.

Hughes got dropped after 1 game this year and hasn't got another opportunity since. What kind of player development is that?

Now look what you've made me done. I had to do research. Apart from being shithouse that game Hughes was named in the bests twice (3rd and 4th) out of his 6 games, so I don't think the nuffies you talk about are that far off.

I also don't know where he fits in our backline to actually get a game.

Also also, Ballas has been shit for years but there are definitely reasons for not playing Hughes (the main one being they play at different ends of the ground?) and it's all besides the point since Freo112's posts read like a troll. I don't think I have seen people call yourself or others on the anti-Ross side a troll or fake account...

I agree with this. Ballas was incredibly lucky to get a contract for this year and has done nothing to justify his selection. D.Pearce has had a better year than Ballas.

Nobody else can play forward I guess. We're going to be so screwed when Ballantyne retires, who's going to play in the forward line?

You guys who defend every single thing Ross Lyon does should listen to yourself sometimes. Your argument now is basically "we have to pick Ballantyne because nobody else on our list can play there".

Ballantyne has been named in Peel's best 0 times but he's straight back in the side.

Nice to see Dardy McCarthy go back to the WAFL to regain some confidence, but overall happy for Matera to be back in. Not so happy about Ballaz but what can ya do?

Hard decisions have to be made on players that won't be around to see us rise. Same with players at Peel who need to
show something at Freo.
I'd rather put Nyhius forward as the defensive forward than watch Balla trying to turn back time.
Peels back line was a strength in the past with Collins, Norton, dominating the air, cameo's from Logue. A Hughes, Nyhius
back line with Kersten, no key positions, struggle.
Peel have had Giro dominating, credit to him, but with so little depth they are back to where they started.
Hard to show something down there with no midfield, KP's.

The way you talk about the ease with which any other player would apparently be able to play forward tells me you haven’t played much footy in your time.

Ballas will never play for peel down in Mandurah. No one wants to play at an oval that has a wing named after you. And especially when you’re playing poorly like he is.

Also who do you think will be held back as the emergency for Sunday. Nuhuis?? Please tell me it isn’t McCarthy!

Player development doesn't only happen playing in the seniors. Sometimes guys get sent back to Peel to work on specific parts of their game, to rebuild confidence, to give their body a rest or just because Ross hates them.

None of us know what the coaching staff tell guys when they go back to Peel but they'd certainly know why they're not playing seniors any more. Playing Ballas, Johnno and Pearce at AFL level is more about having onfield teachers and leaders than trying to win games of footy.

I reckon were getting close to 20 debutants in the last two and a half seasons. We capped the age of players traded in at 23. On that evidence it's hard to question that we've committed to a youth policy.

With Sandi and Fyfe out we're very skinny for experience right now. Playing Ballas means that we have another person who can give onfield guidance about structures and positioning. Yeah I know he'll slip over and he's lost pace but he still gives a 100% every time and that's not a bad example for the young guys to follow.

So where does this leave Nyhius, Hughes?
Even though our defense is solid, without the run, kicking power of Wilson, Ryan on show we are going nowhere.
Intercept marks turn defense into attack.
Pearce, Hamling are good negators, Blakely, Hill? Johnson used to be, stopping Freo, Fyfe, Wilson would be top of the list.
Our forward line without Tabs isn't worth talking about.

Probably going to get banned but thought I might try and contribute. Taberner's absence has really made life very difficult looked good and seemed to straighten up the side. Darcy I think has also been missed. Gave a great chop out for Sandilands allowing Sandi to be an impact player. Debuts to Giro, Cera, Duman, Crowden, Jones, Brayshaw and Banfield shows that Ross is adopting a youth policy. Peel are out of form which means Ballantyne gets a chance again. Future is not as bleak as it seems.

Nope you're pretty much spot on

How dare you come here....................And write such an intelligent post :)
Yeah we looked better with Tabs in and him going down upset the balance. No excuses though ;)
I agree that the future isnt a bleak as some would make out it to be.

Apparently we should have drafted Powell-Pepper and we were going to finish bottom 4 according to Walls. It's never as bad or as good as you think.

TBH I had Hughes pencilled in as a best 22 defender at the start of pre-season with Blakely going to the midfield. I haven't seen Peel this year but it doesn't sound like he's going that well at WAFL level. I think he can play at AFL level but I'm not sure where he fits into the current lineup.

Nyhuis is kind of the same. Has shown he can play at AFL level but I don't if he will ever nail down a permanent spot with Ryan and Wilson both there.

Tabs is our only genuine tall forward with any experience. Cox shows potential and TBA could turn out to be the KPF/ruck we've been looking for but only time will answer that question.

Keep the faith blueshark, we've got plenty of talent on our list but they need to get 50 games under their belts before they can perform at a high level consistently.

Yeah, you gotta watch out for guys with new accounts and low post numbers...every one knows the only legit ones fitting those criteria are all friends and family of Brayshaw, Cerra, Crowden, Giro etc...:tongueclosed:...the rest are trolls...

Holy Cow - Mat De Boer absolutely killed it today.

24 disposals, 5 marks, 9 tackles and kicked 3.

We literally don't have anyone on our list who can do that. Actually, now that we've dropped Cam Mac, I doubt we have a forward who can take just the 5 marks.

Ethan Hughes misses, Cam Mac dropped, Ballentyne promoted, Jones kept his spot after just 6 possessions, Kirsten, Apeness and Cerra will be barlowed..

I honestly don't know how Ross expects to kick enough goals with the team he's selected this week unless Cox is going to turn into Carey overnight.

Baffling.
