Here is how Luke Jackson goes playing second fiddle to a backup ruck (Reidy)

Grundy came off in the 3rd qtr - Jackson rucked against Ladhams as much as he rucked against Grundy. In Grundy's minutes, he had a hitout win % of 60.5% and 47.8% to advantage.

Great, what happened the game before then? Got beat by Rhys Stanley. Reidy didn't play in isolation - he played coz Jackson was cooked. Battling illness, but the repeat ruck loads cooked him. And that's been a recurring theme of Jackson's career. When he gets these extended runs as solo ruck, he has these insane games to start. And then it falls apart.

I think there's a real argument that in a one-off, blow all your chips game, tomorrow doesn't matter, Jackson solo makes sense. I'd probs still disagree coz the 5th bench spot is worth it to not risk giving insane ascendency if an injury happens (see Reeves/Meek vs Emmett last night), but you can make the argument. But a Round 6 Sunday game isn't "tomorrow doesn't matter".

But it literally is a one off, Darcy is just concussed. Not sure I would agree Stanley beat Jackson either but that's neither here nor there. I think there is plenty of data to suggest that Jackson can solo ruck effectively - yeah maybe not forever though.

Two options
Cox > Darcy
Young > Wagner
Fredericks > Scerri

Or

Young > Darcy
Fredericks > Scerri
(Young plays third tall forward role mixed with midfield when Voss is in the Centre providing ruck relief)

Comes down to Wagner vs Mason Cox

The other options are Erasmus, Johnson or JOM and I can’t see any of them being dropped.

Talk of Sharp getting a game is crazy.

He and NOD both played quite well but there just isn’t room in the first choice team as yet. NOD didn’t do a lot wrong in his AFL games so my opinion only by he is in front of Sharp.

Against a rookie in Visentini.
Two rucks v Jackson will just continuously put their knees up at every centre bounce.

There’s 18 matches left in the season.

6 day break v Carlton the match after West Coast on Saturday Night, then a 6 day break v Bulldogs on Friday night THEN a 6 day break after that v Hawthorn on Thursday.

There’s decent rucks - Carlton with Pittonet, Hawthorn with Meek and Reeves, obviously Bulldogs with English (if he’s fit by then).

Ain’t playing Jackson lone ruck. He’s no superhero.

Don't think Scerri will get dropped, think he was quite impactful from his 7 touches. 5 score involvements in a game where we could barely get near the scoreboard.
Love the idea of Cox coming in for a Derby debut. He'd relish the pro-eagles crowd I think, perfect game for him to come in with some swagger.
If Young is fit and firing, by all means put him in.

Would love some selection integrity and get Freddie to have 1 week at Peel, but I doubt it.

I reckon Freddie has done pretty well to get to where he is in the AFL, he offers quite a bit above what Scerri is giving us at the moment so in he'll come.
He would have been totally out of his depth in those conditions and under that pressure againsf the Pies.
All good mate, we'll talk in a couple of weeks.

We should rest a few players during that period.
Be interesting to see how Young fits in given his injury history.
How much will these short breaks, especially with flying back and forth will impact his recovery and selection.

Face it. There will be rotations and changes. Scerri has well but the fixtures coming up will be tight. Frederick is more experienced and he’s definitely needed.

Frederick gets West Coast and Carlton to get back into it then it’s straight into Bulldogs, Hawthorn and Essendon.

Scerri ain’t going to play every single game this season. He will need time at Peel. Hopefully see Murray, Sweid, Sharp, NOD coming back throughout the next few weeks
.

All depends on the weather. If we get another wet one, I’d be going;
Young for Darcy
Freddie can play wafl, unless Scerri needs a rest after his block of games.
Voss can chop out in the ruck. Might help him get some of his swagger back not being stationed deep forward.

If dry;
Bring cox in and young forces Scerri out.

Reasoning on Scerri being the one to go;
  • thought o’meara was quite good besides his first touch turn over that missed the target by 15m. Linked up through the middle well.
  • I think wags plays on Harley and tries to get him to blow his lid.
  • I’d like to see raz or Johnno bully Duursma. Lock him down and then run off him to hurt the other way. Really challenge one of them on this. I want those two to have zero influence.
  • I’ve forgiven Worner as the weeks gone on. I wanted him gone when that kick came
Off the side of his boot and went out of bounds for a lasso.

One rule - the coaches messaging needs to be, if you don’t go first option and then run into trouble, you’ll pay the price with your position in the team. I saw a really safe freo team on Friday night. It felt like 2024 again. Scared to pull the trigger. When we did, we scored. Be brave or play for peel.

'Scerri did well from his seven touches'. Spare me.

If Frederick had played exactly the same game this board would want him banished never to play again.

That's despite him being being a match winner on his good days.

Double Standards.
Apple and oranges here.

Michael Frederick is now into his 7th year on the list.

Scerri has only played 4 games. Think he's going alright.

Michael Frederick has to go down to Peel and earn his spot with the rest of those Peel guys.

Some have just convinced themselves that Frederick isn't any good and won't believe being told otherwise.

It is what it is, I look forward to him coming back and tearing it up for us. He's been sorely missed.

Knew it was a non-issue when it was revealed he was out at the start of the season and so far haven't seen anything to say that we NEED him in the team.

Nothing wrong with a guy going down to Peel to prove themselves.

Are you denying his 7 touches weren't impactful? Out of our 10 scores he was involved in half of them...

My point was that Freddie shouldn't be an automatic lock to come straight in, give this kid another run in the 1's and let Freddie have a hit out at Peel to work himself back to fitness and to prove himself. I love his Freddie's link-up play and his marking prowess however my biggest knock on Freddie is that he doesn't do the pressuring acts that his speed really should be helping him with. Scerri does these things which is his role. I feel like this season our FWD line is working so well because all players are buying into the that side of the game.

Scerri has done very well, but he also hasn’t kicked a goal and i don’t think he’s even had a shot yet?

Couple of weeks at Peel with the confidence of having had 4 weeks in the 1’s will do him a world of good
