It's not the money... it's the length of the contract.
They both have a contract in front of them waiting to be signed.
Two 25 year olds. Longer term offers from other clubs is equivalent to more money. I still don't see the issue. Why lowball 2 clear best 22 players for the sake of contract term?

Im not so sure they will be best 22 in say 2-3 years. Both have clearly peaked while guys like Dunkley, Mclean, Williams will go past them if they haven't already.

End of first would end up in the early to mid 20s after lynch compo, Carlton and GC priority picks and academy bids. It probably just gets spent on a West bid.
Even if it is, it means that we end up with later picks, though - particularly if we lose another player to FA or make some trades to get us back into the middle of the draft.

I'm not (yet) sold on letting either Dahlhaus or Wallis go, but it would give us (1) cap space; (2) a shot at the mid-late draft where we've had some luck in previous years - and there does seem to be a number of state capable league players that would fit us around at the minute; and (3) a better chance at balancing the list. It's not as simple as, "Oh, Dahlhaus/Wallis for West isn't worth it." Even if the pick is soaked up, there are other potential assets in play.

Not sure we can rely on our recruiter's past performance given our head recruiter has changed.

But some times change can be a positive. Pretty sure master negotiatior and tactician JMac would've caved in to Wallis and Dahl by now and paid an inflated contract (like he did with quite a few players). Hopefully Power knows what he is doing and we can keep Wallis and Dahl (assuming we think they can get back to their best - and at 25 why couldn't they?).

Tbe other issue is that if we recruit a FA (and Power has said we will be looking at this more seriously) any FA comp we get is heavily diluted before West even gets a chance to soak it up.

My feeling is that Wallis will go. I hope we are smart and creative about it. Why not do a side deal with Brisbane (if Wallis chooses there) to incentivise them to overpay Wallis on a 2 yr grossly inflated contract that ensures band 1?

Even with Dunkley, McLean, Williams playing there are still games going to Jong, Roarke Smith, Honeychurch, Biggs this year.

Considering this club's potential for serious injury, there is still a huge requirement for actual AFL players to top off the team selected each week and provide quality depth.

Lowballing or letting go guaranteed commodities during a rebuild for the potential of higher ceilings elsewhere through the draft is how Brisbane and Carlton ended up in the shit they're in. That bottom tier of guys each week has stood out like a sore thumb for us this year. If Dahl and Wallis become that bottom tier, were a much better team.

100% Spot on. Plus it nearly always costs more to attract rather than retain talent. Look at what Norf are reportedly offering for a pretty mediocre talent in Polec.

I don't recall.many of the power dynastic clubs losing too many best 22 25 yr olds.

Blew the #1 pick on McCartin. They should have stuck with Petracca like EVERYBODY said to.
Petracca, despite being the better pick, is just as out of shape as Mccartin is, if not more so.

They'd be just as screwed either way. That pick didn't make or break them.

Isn't all this just speculation and just normal negotiation, we can't expect the club just to match what other clubs may or may not be offering, most players can get more money or longer contracts if they leave just as Trengrove did with us.

If either of them are as an example asking for a 5 year deal I would say no, if its a 3 year then fair enough but ultimately this is all speculation and we should let it play about before we get to angsty about the potential result.

I'd imagine it'd be traded for either a player or a combination of later picks to cover West/Khamis, hence not being a live end of first rounder on draft night.

Unless we trade it before the draft.

Package our first and a pick in the 20s and we could go after a big fish like Shiel.
Trade it for a 2019 first rounder, then go hard at Kelly with three first round picks available in hand. 2 x 2019 & 2020. He will be out of contract end of next yr as well.

I'm not really getting angsty. I've just seen this story before with Ward when the club absolutely butchered that negotiation. We have a green list manager in place and a lot of the guys around the league are signing new deals and we are hearing donuts about two guys who are very useful contributors to our team.
