I don't think two Friday night games works. The whole point of Friday night games as a desirable timeslot is that it's the only footy on at the time. Having two on at a time defeats the whole purpose. If everyone has the spotlight on them, then no one has the spotlight on them.

It works if you have a Perth game every week, but that would be a bit unfair.

Except the vast majority still watch on FTA. Put two games on Friday night and only one of them will be on FTA, just like with Saturday. Hence why clubs love Friday night footy - you're getting prime exposure to the largest audience.

Ch 7 aren't going to cut their news in Melbourne for a 6.30pm start. Broadcasters rule the schedule. News rates higher than the footy.

A 6.30pm start will also see lots of people miss the start of the game. Some struggle to get there at 7.50pm or when they have tried a 7.20pm FNF start.

A 9.15pm start would be pushed back to 9.30.

A 9.15 game start means you might have to cross after the game that has started or a 2 or 3 minute intro as some games run well for over 2 hours when you add up the 4 quarters, then there is about 32 minutes for the 3 breaks (6+20+6). There is a lot of time wasted with score reviews, blood rules and injuries with carts being driven on and taking forever to get off the ground.


At 10.30pm at half time of a boring game / big margin game, might see plenty of TV sets be switched off.

I get where he's coming from, in that it starts out small and just grows into his "mob mentality" where no one really knows why they are booing people any more, they just do because everyone else is. That being said, I have no idea how the league can conceivably stop it. You may not, and I certainly don't, agree with Ablett's stance, but extrapolate this to Sam Powell Pepper where he was booed by Adelaide fans because of something off field. He was probably lucky that the outrage was only limited to SA, as you could easily see what happened to him also being escalated around the country.

My memory might be fading a little here but I’m not sure when everyone who boo’d Adam Goodes became instantly racist.

He went over to Perth one day, tunnelled, slide in and flopped his way around as had become a hallmark of his late career but with umpiring impunity never before seen against West Coast in Perth. The Eagles supporters responded with the only thing they know how to do, to boo often and loudly.

The next week we are subject to the babbling Melbourne media launching a Gaff like character defense and in turn football fans everywhere continued the booing. Ultimately and regrettable it did go on a little too long.

Were their some booing for racist reasons, undoubtedly. Did 40k West Coast Eagles members suddenly become One Nation sympathisers, I don’t think that’s how it happened.

I don't think you've really answered the question either. Something has clearly triggered the crowd in both cases that isn't clear cut like them doing something dirty to an opposition player.

But it's really hard to determine or understand the motivation unless you're the one booing, but even then i suspect there would've been some that were booing without even really knowing why (they just joined in).

but in both scenarios the booing seemed over the top and unnecessary, but only this case seems to be getting action taken against it.

One thing on the Gary Ablett booing. Those in the industry calling the booers disrespectful can eat a bag of dicks. Why is GAJ above reproach. Sure, he's been a great player, but he's been well paid for that. I don't see why he is beyond reproach.

The fact of the matter is that most popular players will get booed. We did the same to Franklin and Dangerfield at our respective home games. It's how the nature of things go , although in this case traded stars are often victim to this policy more then most other types of players
