Non Lions Discussion 2019

I'll never forget the night the Lions played Essendon at the Telstra Dome I think it was called that then. A couple years after we beat them in the GF. They were feral that night the Bombers fans. Leppitisch got injured and had to be stretched off and the vile abuse he copped from Bomber supporters as he came off on a stretcher was disgusting and for me summed the majority of them up. For me Essendon are the worst supporters in the AFL but Richmond and Collingwood run them close.

Interesting all the complaining about the poor umpiring yesterday but when the lesser sides like the Lions get consistently bad decisions against them no one bats an eye lid. Only the big clubs are allowed to complain.

Last week in the first qtr the Pies got a goal given that hit the post. They got about four or five 50/50 calls and though it made no difference to the final result it certainly helped them get off to a flyer. They even got given a goal later on review that could have easily been over turned and yesterday exactly same scenario was given a point.

My biggest gripe with umpiring over the years is they allow the champions of the game and big teams an extra second or two to dispose of the ball or nudge a player in the back. They're scared to pay a free kick against champions. Dusty Martin gets way with murder and Ablett has for years. Dangerfield will throw once or twice a match but the umps are scared to call him out for it.

Can we change the Anzac Day Medal from "the player in the match considered to best exemplify the Anzac spirit - skill, courage, self-sacrifice, teamwork and fair play" to just simply BOG? Pendles was BOG and had a great game, no doubt. But it is a best on ground award and they should just say so.

Yeah agree with that. On another point, its so cringe worthy how sports get compared to battle / war. There, old man rant over.

I go to quite a few games as a neutral when I'm in Melbourne and there's always a noticeably different atmosphere at Essendon games. Their fans just whinge more. They could be twelve goals up and double the free kick count and still you'll hear them carping about the umpiring.

Some people say it goes back decades, but I think it really got bad after the 2001 grand final. They genuinely expected to be starting an era of dominance that would set them apart as the 'Manchester United of the AFL', but felt cheated out of both the 1999 and 2001 premierships. Of course, they weren't cheated, but it's easier to take on a victim mentality than accept that your footy club isn't special; it's just another footy club.

Curious if Hocking is going to comment on the state of umpiring or will he put it down to a disgruntled fan base and perception/attitudes again?

When he was on SEN earlier in the week (may have been last week), he was talking about the fact that it is very difficult to obtain/retain umpires. I found that to be a very interesting response. Does that mean imply "we know that the umpiring standard is below standard today, but hey we don't have a lot of options because we don't have anything better"?

Also said the answer is not to make them full time but didn't explain why not

I think a lot of them have pretty substantial professional careers that they'd have to give up to become full time.

I wonder if we need a mix of part and full time umpires. Full time umpires could spend their weekdays reviewing games and delivering training to other umpires.

Teams who consistently play in big games in front of big crowds know how to play and act in big moments to avoid getting penalised or draw the right frees (this is partly why we got pantsed last week).
Collingwood, Richmond and Geelong are very good at it, their good players know they can tread a very fine line and find themselves on the right side of decisions for the most part.

Put an inexperienced team like us out there on a big stage like yesterday and we would have given away 30+ free kicks - holding too long, high tackles, pushes, the lot. Just from being overkeen and going in too hot or nervous.

It’s an underrated skill to be able to perform under duress from big crowds and something im concerned we just don’t get exposed to enough.

To be fair though that 99-01 Essendon team was pretty special and probably under achieved. They certainly blew a golden opportunity in 99 but then who knows how they would have gone V the Roos

Yeah I remember hearing that a couple of them are highly paid solicitors.

Pretty uninspiring match tonight for mine.

Brisbane v Suns would surely be more compelling for Friday night than Port v Norf. Amazing this got fixtured.

Port went very nicely last week and North will be desperate (or if not, we could be witnessing B.Scott's last rites). Might surprise ya.

Not sure Norf can afford to administer the last rites until the end of season..

The journos aren't happy till they get the first sacked coach of the season. Last year must've done their head in, not to mention their disappointment with St Kilda's strong start to this season. Goody is no chance regardless of how poor the dees go. No, Scotty is their guy, if they don't notch a win soon the pressure (as in the endless avalanche of negative stories in the press) will become close to unsurviveable.

And just on that. Well done to the Pies a couple of seasons ago for sticking fat & not capitulating to the media hype.

Yep.... and he lived through that in 2017 when the media speculation was out of control, Where they were actually telling him what he was doing...They had him linked and inked to Coach the Gold Coast..Only to see Scott accept a two-year contract extension to the end of 2020..I agree the pressure will be intense...Not sure norf can afford to pay his contract out and then pay another coach on top of that...and...Scott doesn't strike me as the sort of bloke to accept anything less

There has been talk of a straight swap with Longmire from Sydney?

Do we have any preference in this one from a club perspective ... maybe North to keep the comp more even and Brad an ex Lion?

I always back the loser - so tonight I’m backing norths
