Planning to go to the GWS game this year, as I'll be in Hobart at the time.

Can someone help me out with a suggestion for which ticket/area/stand is my best bet to be

A) undercover, and
B) close to somewhere to buy drinks

Many thanks.
  • It's all pretty much undercover except the front parts of L1 and the GA sections such as the lawn.
  • Most of the food and drink outlets are located at the Ricky Ponting Stand
  • Upper Level 1 is pricey but in my opinion has the best viewing. Front of Level 2 is also good.
  • You also get a view of the huge river in the background while watching the game, it's surreal to be able to see that and the game at the same time
Make sure you visit the lovely lady who hangs around the cheer squad bay, she sells cheap raffle tickets before the game starts - prizes are given on the day.

Take an extra coat and gloves!

I wonder how many members a Tassie club would get. Assuming we have 5k which switch, I dunno how many Hawthorn have but say 10k and then if they get double that as members that were waiting for a stand alone team you get to about 30k members. I think they’d struggle to ever get enough members in a limited market to keep them competitive. God knows it’s hard for us.

From the Herald Sun
Key point at the end. Third team for Adelaide or Perth with another in Tasmania.

AFL rules out ACT expansion, declares Canberra ‘Giants’ territory’

The AFL has ruled out Canberra as a new expansion city, with chief executive Gillon McLachlan declaring the ACT “Giants’ territory.”
Western Bulldogs President Peter Gordon put expansion back on the radar earlier this season when he called on the game to increase its footprint to 20 teams.
GWS have more than 4000 Canberra-based members built-up from playing three matches a season in the Nation’s Capital, illustrating the growing strength of football in a region that has also produced several AFL players.

However, AFL boss McLachlan says the Giants have invested so heavily in Canberra and that won’t be taken away — effectively ruling out any prospect of the ACT getting a new permanent resident.
“I believe it’s Giants’ territory,” said McLachlan in an interview with The Daily Telegraph on the eve of the season.
“I think they’re there now and Canberra is very much a Giants’ town.
“Membership is strong and the crowds are strong. It’s been a very successful partnership with Canberra.”

There is traditionally an exodus of Canberrans to Batemans Bay on the south coast on the Easter weekend, but GWS are still expecting over 10,000 fans tomorrow against Fremantle at UNSW Canberra Stadium in Manuka.
Scheduling hasn’t helped GWS for their second Canberra game in a fortnight’s time either, with the Saturday afternoon clash against St Kilda to directly clash with a Canberra Raiders NRL match.
However, GWS have worked hard to get a Friday night match against Hawthorn in Canberra later this year which should sell out.

The Giants have also taken AFLW and pre-season matches to Canberra above and beyond their contract.
GWS co-captain Phil Davis and debutant Jackson Hately both hail from Canberra.
Tasmania still looms as the most likely expansion location for the AFL, who may also look at adding a third team in either Adelaide or Perth.

Anyone else a bit worried as to why the NMFC has decided to not celebrate our history and culture in our 150th year? An immense achievement putting us in the top percentage of clubs in the world.

Personally I can't see how this could possibly be an oversight. Could they not be bothered? Is it too hard?
Or do they not want to build up pride, fervour and excitement at our identity and achievements? Would this work against a future 7 games in Tassie that may have already been discussed between Gil and our management?

Ever since I heard JB almost tripping over his boner at the excitement at playing 7 games there, I lost trust with him, some on our board and the AFL.

Mentioned this in the game day thread but the football department is doing us a favour vs the Swans. The allusion of Fortress Hobart has been shattered by a severely depleted opponent. This was sold to us as the best reason for handing Tasmania a forth game. If we lose all four, then we should demand at least one back.

I pointed out this exact scenario earlier in the year. This club gambling on wins to save everything while pissing away rusted on Victorian members - of which we don't exactly have overflowing riches. They honestly make me feel sick at the moment.

12,799 attended. And how many from outside Mapsmania went over for the game? Playing games on the Apple Isle is a Bust. If we want to play games where there are Apples let's play in Harcourt. At least that's in Victoria. :stern look

Time to give Tassie the boot. It looked like there were more Sydney fans.

So much for guaranteed wins. Can’t even beat a bottom 4 side there.

Time to look at another regional centre if you ask me. Shepparton. North of Melbourne and would easily fill Deakin Reserve. Think of the academy players from the GV.

...and fast train being promised by Libs.

Just need $15M to get the stadium ready.

We can not afford to as shit as we are in the current landscape. Fast becoming irrelevant, last years efforts are all but forgotten along with the respect of the football world. Genuinely worrying times for our Club, be ready for another battle for our identity within the next decade.

There were a lot of Sydney fans there last night- but it looked to be a pretty solid crowd to be honest. Was surprised it wasn't at least 14K.
There was a solid crowd - a solid 12k.

There would have been a solid 22K in Melbourne but the NMFC Board - without consulting any members - decided it would be better to play the game down there as we 'always draw big crowds there and rarely get beaten'. Well - until yesterday at least.

If we win 4 games in Tassie in 2019 and it helps us play finals, would you be happy with that? Would you buy a ticket if we made a prelim again? Would you do everything in your power to secure a GF seat if we made it? You might laugh at this proposition, but the club is thinking this way. 4 wins in Tassie this year would have seen us in the finals.
