Opinion Pendles and Steele are Past Their Prime

Yeh we are changed from a contested ball side a few years back to an outside side. A few key players want to flick it around and dont like it wet.

I didn't see anyone shirk any contest on the inside. I thought the Giants looked a lot bigger and stronger than our boys.

I don’t think Stephenson is agile or strong enough to become a mid. He really can’t turn on a dime. He looked almost injured yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a star in the making but he won’t become a mid for a long time. Just doesn’t seem a natural mid to me.

also needs to learn how to use his pace better.

Stephenson has an amazing double step and acceleration.
He will be wasted as a forward pocket.

Stephenson baffles me. He is supposed to be super quick but never runs away from his man. He gets shut down way to easily with the ball for a guy whose supposed to have elites speed.

He's super fast when he winds up, but his strength and first couple of steps aren't explosive enough to break from a tackler... yet. Still a kid, a lot of physical development to go.

I’m saying that they are by the punters on club boards especially if the team is losing. We are no better or worse than any other board on BF.

No-you are suggesting that what I wrote is simply the ravings of a one eyed, blinkered supporter venting after another finals defeat. I don't believe I am. Would you please respond to the specifics of what I actually wrote? If we had actually gotten over the line in that frantic last term do you think a Pendlebury tackle that resulted in a goal early in the third term would have been identified as the turning point and Pendles would have been called an inspirational leader if he had scrounged together 14 possessions?

When Pendles has been lauded by the press it is usually after a typical Pendles performance- 30 plus possesions, 80% efficiency a goal or two. Anything less than that is assessed as disappointing or poor. This does not apply to Cotchin. Fact.

Ultimately there's a reason why opposition teams put so much effort into running with Pendles and Sidey. They're our two best users, our most damaging mids and if you take them out of the game our entries inside 50 become really scattered. I like Treloar, but he doesn't do the damage of either Pendles or Sidey. I love Adams, particularly finals Adams, but he still isn't the guy I want breaking free with ball in hand. Wills does his job well, but I'm not expecting him to git up a forward lace out.

This is where DeGoey becomes our most important player going forward. He is our Dangerfield, our Martin, our Cripps our fully fledged out and out superstar that we need at every centre bounce. Elite combination of speed, strength and that undeniable X factor that every team yearns for, that can grab a game by the scruff of the neck and make everyone around him better. If DeGoey plays 70% midfield time, we're not talking about how Pendles and Sidey look like their past it.. we'd be talking about how those blokes are getting 25 touches away from the contest and how they run the best midfield in the comp.

Yep. Just need more power on the inside of the contest to complement our silky guys. Hopefully Degoey and maybe Maynard can be add that power.

On Pendles being subdued, yes he was by a very good tagger, but have a look at the stats sheet for that tagger. Clubs have to take a pretty big hit to their own midfield in order to subdue him. Pendles still won his position comfortably

As for the commentators and so called experts, they have their favourites so I try not to read into their BS. As I’ve said in another thread, once they start talking about spines in today’s game or even creaming over one tackle, you know they’re struggling.

I like Wills but he kills the movement of the ball. At stoppages he is stationary and goes to ground too often. He has plenty of tackles because he sits on opposition players at stoppages.

2 of his fumbles ended up in direct goals for GWS on the turnover.

Seriously Dave, this is a pretty ordinary thread. I have barely slept because I just couldn’t get some of yesterday’s images out of my head and this negativity although not abundant is the last thing I believe most posters want right now.

Pendles and Sidey are a huge reason we even got to a GF and PF respectively. These guys still have plenty to offer... [emoji106]

Sidebottom needs to play high half forward and kick 40 goals next year. Degoey has to be a 80/20 mid. Beams on the ball and Treloar on wing. Make Sier follow Phillip's all preseason.

Pendles cant be Capt next year. Its Adams's time.

His pace is overstated, yes he is quick but he isn't the quickest in the AFL like many make him to be.
Think it was Howe who was interviewed after the Geelong final and he said Stepho whilst quick isnt the quickest at the club surprisingly named C.Brown as the person who regularly wins the sprints at the club.

Heater easily kept up with him last night and then was way too strong bodied for Stepho to compete with him.

Needs to add a good 10kgs of lean muscle and get stronger, which won't effect his agility but will improve his explosiveness and strength in the contest.

Tell your friend to **** off then. There’s nothing inherently negative about this thread. It’s just discussing the merits of moving Sidebottom and Oendlebury into other roles whilst we inject some new midfielders in the team.

I don't think this thread is overtly negative and 'toxic'. I think Dave made a very good point in that we need younger mids taking over the reigns allowing more freedom and less pressure on Pendles and Steele to be the main men.

If we can have Degoey and Maynard step up to genuine midfield players who regularly impact and are damaging it frees up Scott and Steele to do their best work outside the contest.

I was surprised he made the AA team tbh. He had a flat patch mid season and was up and down start of year for impacting. Played into very good form in the back end of the year and into AA discussions off that.

Go back and read some thread early to mid year and similar points made in this thread were brought up then.

He is a champion of the club and still very capable of great footy but the time of relying on him to be our main man needs to be handed over to someone else. Allow Pendles more outside work perhaps on the wing and less reliance on him.

Like De boer, he's playing a negating role. Thus should be judged on his defensive impact, which waa solid.
