The point I was trying to make is the early picks we get for kelly helps a reset a bit.. a tad thru choice a tad thru compelled.. as the pnps we looked at us have said no. Something we may have to get familiar with if we donet start to refresh the list a bit.
Wewent from 8 to 1 to 3... d saywe could just as easy go from 3 to 10. Im not convinced as yet that we have a totally refreshed side like the club are trying to sell us.. I feel we still have significant change over that has to happen.

Nor I...... There's a feeling of sameness about it at this point, which is very early days I know.

That could change if we secure a good player through the off season, AND we give players like Taylor and Ablett limited games next year whilst simultaneously getting games into Narke, Simpson, Constable, Freddy and the like..... Maybe even Cocky?

But will CS, can CS, cast off his conservatism and do that, whilst implementing a more aggressive game plan?

It's only too big if they were all slow and terrible below their knees, not the case here; apart from Hawkins, who should be living out of the gaol square for the rest of his career, the other three are as athletic and mobile as big men get.

Will Scott do it.... I'm gonna say he will because I want something to look forward to next year :)

Agree - we all need something to look forward to.

The main things being (for me anyway)
1. More accepting of risk and hence moving the ball more quickly...................... then well behind that but still important:

2. Using the younger types in more demanding roles at times. These all seem to have higher ceilings than we have seen so far: Henry, Parfitt , Clark, Narkle, O'Connor, Constable?. Even Guthrie to leave tagging/defensive stuff alone and go to attacking role (as per WC final).
3. Looking at younger players if their preferred position opens up through injury or poor form. e.g Simpson, Kreuger, Zuthrie, Fort, (Buzza if still with us).
4. More of Selwood/Harry/Tuohy in support roles. Rather than key roles. Danger more forward too, if we can put together enough mid strength (see point 2)
5. If we do get our hands on 3 good quality picks (kids) try each one out as soon as they hit form in preseason or VFL (as we did with Clark). Early picks should have fewer deficiencies than the speccies we have had to take in recent years (Narkle, Constable [tank], Fort, Brownless, Simpson, Zuthrie [body] etc.

All of that will probably come at some cost to the win/loss ratio. But maybe we need a pause in 2020 before we load up a couple more kids and a big FA going in to 2021. Hopefully the new appointments to the board and assistant coaching signal a desire for new ideas/ways of doing?

Just my guess.

When he gets 20+ we rarely lose too.

That's true, and earlier in the year TH and Sav played more fwd together with Stanley rucking most of the time we kicked bigger scores and the goals came more easily.
What some fail to understand is the talls open it up for smaller players.

Remembering he out bodied Jeremy McGovern in the finals, he can play deep with great effect. 4 goals that game.

I think it was a wise idea giving him a full season at VFL level... But this is why we should of given Buzza a chance threw out the year... People say his not up to it, but over 12 months since his last game is to long and he deserved a couple of games this season..

I think the constant knock was it would make our forwardline slow, to tall, all that stuff so he never got his opportunity.
Even when he kicked bags in the twos it was all about tackle happy.

First post in a long time. Still read regularly especially at this time of year.

I was surprised that both Harry and Gaz were extended, I hope there isn't a problem next year if they are no longer best 22. With these extensions and the upgrades of Zach Guthrie and Sam Simpson the Cats are tight for list spots. We need quality not quantity. I would suggest that Wells look at swapping our first 4 picks to St Kilda in exchange for their first. The Saints need picks as they are looking to trade in a few. This would give us one pick plus the Eagles first which we will most certainly get in the Tim Kelly trade. (Say round 1 this year and next and a their round 2 or 3. The round 2 or 3 also goes to the Saints in the Jack Stevens trade. So our ins are 2 first round selections, Stevens, Zuthrie, Simpson and then a pick at the end of the draft if required. I know everyone has their own opinions but I like both Simpson (should have player in the prelim instead of Hendo) and Zuthrie. I would be happy with this at the end of the trade period.

Not sure if mentioned but there’s an article on foxsports (trade preview) that says Saints want a pick in the 20s for Steven.

If this is true it might explain Wells saying talks were a long way off. I don’t want to even trade 36 for him!

Lol they are deluded not our fault they need picks badly.

I would say thats overs for Brad Hill especially given what the Saits are trying to achieve with most of thier picks already traded out. Freo get our Round 1

It may be overs, but it's pretty much confirmed that Hill to St Kilda for pick 6 is a done deal - will be surprised if that deal isn't signed off by the end of the first day of the trade period

And why are we trading our first round pick? Thought the AFL advised that we aren't actually allowed to trade our 2019 or 2020 first round picks - that would indicate they are going no where unless the AFL suddenly has a change of mind

Kreuger would replace Rohan. Kreuger is no slouch when it comes to closing speed and ability to chase.
Had a quick search to see if he had any special attributes at his draft combine (2017) ( he didn't test last year because he was already on our list)
..... and this:

Smartspeed agility test

Kane Farrell - 8.10 seconds
Ben Miller - 8.10
Brent Daniels - 8.11
Trent Mynott - 8.20
Nathan Kreuger - 8.21
Aaron Naughton - 8.22
Mitchell Podhajski - 8.26
Oscar Allen - 8.27
Stefan Okunbar - 8.29
Matthew Ling - 8.30
Callan England - 8.30
Aiden Bonar - 8.30
Andrew Brayshaw - 8.30

I assume this is a test mids are expected to dominate but Kreuger is right up there.

Also listed in
Running vertical jump
Kyron Hayden - 103cm
Ben Paton - 99cm
Ryley Stoddart - 96cm
Kane Farrell - 95cm
Jordan Houlahan - 95cm
Hayden McLean - 92cm
Noah Balta - 89cm
Harrison Jones - 88cm
Oscar Allen - 88cm
Tom McCartin - 88cm
Matthew Day - 87cm
Nathan Kreuger - 87cm

I expected to see him in the kicking lists as well but not. He is a very good kick though ( as is Rohan).

As I have said he has tools - just need to see if can apply them at the top level.

If that was the case, I'd like to see Rohan trialled off half-back or the wing. If he's getting 10 touches a game, breaking the lines off the half back line is something that could seriously improve us, him vs. Bews. We know he is a great at applying tackling pressure, I reckon he could really work back there. Also, allows more opportunity forward for Cocky (if he can get on the park - we then wouldn't be losing tackling pressure) and possibly Fogarty if he can run into some form.

Without getting lost in semantics of words I wish Scott would be more conservative. It’s his want to manufacture new spots for players that has been the downfall.

At the start of the season we played the best player we had for each position. Then as more ‘stars’ became available we went backed to picking the ‘best’ players and finding a role for them.

Perhaps like you say a more attacking game plan would’ve helped. But the game plan worked well when we were winning and on top of the ladder.

To me it looked like we had all the pieces of the puzzle. But we were trying to put it together wrong and the wrong time.
It’s a fine line, play like we did in the first 10 rounds for the last 10 we might have the cup.

We're on the same page....... ...

If Rohan is displaced by someone (I had forgotten Cockatoo! ) that would be a sign of improvement - a positive. Rohan at half back could work as long as he is not expected to lock down. We do need a Houli / Rich type who is constantly moving around the backline asking for the ball and then using top foot skills to deliver it. Rohan has pace, is an excellent kick IMO but can he he get his head around a role that looks simple but isn't?

Clark could be doing this job next year - he is not shy about demanding the pill and his kicking is usually pretty good as long as the goals are not in his sights- but could just as easily establish himself on the wing.

I reckon if I checked I could find Rohan in defence at the Swans. Like to know how that went.
