We'll get to see if he rides to AFL level somewhere else though :p
Few players who leave Geelong flourish elsewhere.* Varcoe did but is getting old.

*someone will prove me wrong

He could end up captain of the club if he's prepared to take play the long hand. Selwood and Danger not around for too much longer. He could be tempted by the prospect of playing alongside two legends for a couple of years before really establishing himself.

If we remember back to the criteria quoted when we were build last time ..character was often quoted as highly required... if we can add kids who have that in juniors (along with talent) it can only be beneficial. Add several ..and then as far as capt gos.. water will find its own level. The trick is to have options.

Whether he picks us is thing id question. Two or three Melb clubs should be able to offer more regular games.... but you point is valid..some kids want the 'experience'..when their time is done they would like to say the played X and Y. Have a look when GA was training in that hub and all the kids wanted to have kick to kick.

I'd like to see close get more game time
Thought he properly had enough games. Did a few good things, especially the run down tackles. He needs to build up his upper body strength for mine.Too many players able to break his tackles (when they saw him). Needs to be able to help hold the ball in more. His pace is something we don’t have a lot of so worth persisting with.

Good post.
Vardy, Hamling & Mumford are 3 premiership players I can think of. The ones going ok at the moment would be Walker, Motlop & McCartney. No world beaters in that lot. We have got rid of a lot of duds that have done nothing: Smedts and Lang come to mind. They leave for greater opportunity but can’t get games for bottom sides tells you something.

Bit odd that of all the players we have been linked with, none are key defenders which looms as our biggest Achilles heel in the finals.

who would you have a ping at ? I think if there was a 25 yo FA CHB available we would be all in ... but not a lot around.

Maybe that's what's pushing Cocky/Narkle/Constable out to test the market?

For the first two I suspect we'd be low balling their contracts, I think Constable would be worried that another 12 months with little exposure at AFL level and decreasing list sizes ends his AFL career at the end of next year.

I'd say Caddy was the big one, he hit a level at Richmond that we never got out of him at Geelong, well certainly not consistently anyway, in saying that his form has come crashing back to earth over the last 12 months and seems to be more the Geelong Caddy.

Higgins comes in as a direct Ablett replacement for a season - fine but doesn't seem necessary to me. Would rather stick with what we have in that part of the ground.

Does Shaun Higgins actually want to come to Geelong or is this a media beat-up?

Did he reject us last year?

If yes to the second question he can get stuffed

So now Crouch is being linked with Port Adelaide .... that would be an unusual move ..its seems not many exchanges happen between those two clubs.. a bit Hawks and Cats. Be a good fit id have thought.
Can't find any news websites mentioned Crouch to Port todays?

Good point. He's actually had numerous chances to come to Geelong. We have chased him for a long time and he has continually rejected our advances. As far as I'm concerned, he doesn't want to come here, and that being the case, we move on and target someone that does. We want players to embrace the club, our culture and want to play for this great jumper iMO. It's clear that Higgins does not want to..

I think they traded Frampton amongst themselves last year? But yes I remember thinking that was unusual.

He could have come as a FA. He would need to be traded for now. He can get stuffed. He had his chance. Don't come crawling back now you see the roos are a complete mess.

And he'll be what, 33 or 34, by the time he'd play for us?

What's the point - a one year retirement plan? And a year's delay in the development of a younger player.

Will any of the talls be available at our picks? Seems to be 5-6 top end talls that could go top 10 but surely some clubs will pick mids or other types that could push one to our pick 11. Maybe Denver Grainger-Barras is that man?
Using early picks on key defenders 2 years in a row may seem a bit odd but if they are quality players we could build or team around a strong defense. And perhaps 1 of them ends up forward anyway

I suspect they see it as trying to make the best22 as strong as possible .. development is all well and good ..and we will develop some players but there is a lot of wastage in drafting ... if we say we have drafted 30 selection in the last 4 drafts .. how many will be best22 players that will give us 10 game ..40 games 100 games..?

Meanwhile we drafted several kids 2 or 3 years ago that will probably not be around next year ..as they just have not been able to show enough quick enough when our side is strong.

For every Ablett thre is probably a Steven , a Clark , a Hmac so I agree its hardly a perfect approach. No doubt we may draft someone with a pick used to get someone like Higgins who would be a much better long term player, perhaps a Menegola ... but we may also draft a House or a Zac Guthrie..

Any news on a mystery mid this year?

What happened to good old Malphi and his inside sources.

By now he would have categorically and emphatically plonked on a yes or no proposition (subject to something changing late) while keeping us all dangling about the perpetual big name mystery mid that was top secret and would come to light late in trade week.
