Just to be clear I know zero about draftees but I did like highlights of Henry, Cook, Poulter, Stone, McMahon and Neale who were thereabouts on the night. So would’ve been happy with any of them.

It seems Freo were right into Henry and Cook but obviously Chapman was rated higher. GWS with pick 15 (next pick) were strongly considering Chapman along with Stone.

Also why is Brennan Cox consistently pigeonholed as a KPD. He has played 13 out of 47 games as KPD all when there was a shortage of key defenders. Whereas Logue has played 1 out of 28 games as a Key forward.

Cook went at 25 so would have been a reach at Pick 14. We’d need to have traded down to preserve the draft capital. I did like his highlights though. Overall I think there is too much emphasis put on the position players play as teenagers. We are drafting a player for the next 12-15 years hopefully and list gaps and weak areas can change hugely within a couple of years so Chapman seems a very good pick.
An added bonus of this year is we should have less hassle extending the contracts of the 2020 draftees in the coming seasons. We will need all the cap space we have to keep our elite Victorian talent in place.

Yeah no doubt every year there’s fwds we rated highly but our selection always seems to go to the mids or defenders which is kind of my point. Again I’m not unhappy with any of our picks but wouldn’t be adverse to us selecting those fwd types over the others for a couple of years.

For me Cox is definitely first in line to be sent fwd but his best footy has been as kpd and was drafted after making u18 AA as kpd.

I’m not sure what else to assume. Is there a long list of players that Freo (or any team for that matter?) has managed to convert from defenders into A grade fwds? Do you feel the best path fwd is to continue to just select mids and defenders and convert them?

Just think outside the box. Cox can play forward, Logue has potential forward, Chapman looks like he would go well forward. There was Naughton going well forward, Ben King was defender in juniors now forward, Lukosious was supposed to be a gun forward playing half back etc etc etc.

I know this will always be a subjective judgement, but I thought Cox showed great signs as a key forward at a time when he often had no tall support and was also called on to be the backup ruckman. He got a rising star nomination as a forward and although he has been excellent in defence I would hate to think we pigeonhole him there. He was drafted as a key forward (yes, we drafted a tall forward) and showed enough to suggest he could be part of our forward mix in the future. We are well stocked for defenders without him, but the same can't be said for the forward line.

Thanks, I thought we might have taken one of the other NGA boys
They're going to be bulking up Chris Walker in the gym this year as an nga for next draft if he cuts it. Were worried he was a bit underdone after a few injuries for this year

One random player caught my eye as I am reading the Adelaide s Sunday Mail newspaper.

Hawks picked up a Subiaco player named Tyler Brockman. He is 180cm and 80kg. Plays as a forward and mid.

He is related to former docker Greg Broughton as he is Tyler Brockmans uncle. Anyone know about Brockman pre draft?

Henry's mate. Apparently wc wanted him

Fair enough. I still don't think there's a no brainer pure forward amongst those though. From my understanding they are all players who can go forward but are likely to split their time across the ground. Henry maybe but he's from all reports is/was a massive flight risk.

For those interested in statistical evidence, this article is actually quite interesting. Basically it outlines goals kicked (& conceded) by small, mids & talls for each team.

It shows that we’re ok with our talls & smalls, but are not getting enough out of out mid size players. Not great reading when you consider who we drafted, but hopefully Sturt gets a good run at it & Nat Fyfe is obviously touted as playing more forward.

It also outlines we need a much greater contribution from our midfield in regards to goals, which I think we all have thought, but these stats back it up. Note there are a lot of variables with this type of information, but I think it represents us pretty well.

We will be flicking good AFL level players for peanuts in next years trade period because of a lack of game time in 2021

We probably lost about 40% of the career goals on the list with the players we dumped and replaced them with what exactly ?
stop gap maybes who have a dozen goals between them

I like a nice balanced list where every player has someone breathing down their neck

Who’s breathing down Lobbs neck if he carry’s on dishing up the crap he dished up last year

Draft picks who MIGHT be upgrades on players who are already perfectly capable in their preferred positions

I give our 2020 off-season 3/10 but but but best availbles

Some People will laugh at me saying this. If Lobb is underperforming at FF, he can be dropped and put Taberner at FF.

It can work.

My only cristism about Ross Lyon in 2017 was not playing Tabs the whole season at FF. Taberner lead Peels goal kicking in 2017 with 41 goals.

Saying that... Freo can have a semi decent forward line with Tabs at FF and Cox or even Traecy at CHF

In the end I don’t think it is personnel that is the problem forward for us, it is game plan. And I expect that to be the biggest change in the coming season. Most of the game plan issues can change quite fast.
  • with our first choice defenders returning our already well structured defence is going to become a brick wall that the football just bounces off.
  • our list is peppered with skilled rebounders who can get our attack moving.
  • midfield has been maturing beautifully and still has room to grow. The coach asked for more speed and has been given it.
  • Cox, Fyfe, Sturt and Henry are already available for forward duty, and can fit in nicely around the existing forwards

Good examples but there’s hardly an exhaustive list of players who have done this. I guess that’s my point. Why when it comes to the freo fwd line do we always have to think outside the box? I’m just saying we should draft a few more forwards then they can play fwd for a coach who likes to play players where they played as juniors.

I agree @raffox a lot of those are multi positional but they definitely would play fwd for us as they have that capability of kicking goals. Like I said, I like the players we drafted but would like to see a few more fwds in the top end picks which I’m hoping will happen over the next few years. Walters is 30 in a couple of weeks, Tabs and Lobb are 28 next year outside of Sturt and as everyone is suggesting Cox (which I agree with) we don’t have a hell of a lot coming through. Plus we were the 3rd worst attack in 2020 that puts us with Adelaide and North heading into 2021.

Cox goes forward.

Hamling, Logue and Pearce can and have played on smalls.

The three above won't play 22 games and Chapman can play 5-10 games.
I can see that happening Too.

In 2017-18, Michael Johnson and Joel Hamling were the 2 experienced talls down back. Duman, Logue, Cox and Collins were all rotated as depth on that 2 year period

Pretty sure Cox didn't play back at all till this year...
