You are kidding. Cox has proven himself a match winner or game changer. Cameron is good, but has never grabbed a game by the throat like Cox has done. Last night Cox again turned the game when he started clunking the pill. He set up a number of goals too. Cox is best 22 every week, especially now when we lack a potent target.
Yeah but can we afford to have him play 1 qtr 3x a season? We know what he can do but he just doesn’t do it.
That’s one of the issues with the club. We have a lot of players that can do the exciting stuff, but it only happens once every so often and we get mesmerised by it and forget the other 80% of the time when the player is a liability.
Cameron really hasn’t an opportunity to show what he can do or become. You say he Cameron hasn’t grabbed a game by the throat, when he has only actually played a handful of games. What I’m saying is maybe we should see if he can actually do it.

Can never read much from pre-season, we were competitive for period v last years two grand finalists, but from both games our issues are still there in plain sight.

If there’s ever a season to mix things up, it’s this. We are not contending, many including me have us anywhere from 6-12, me more 8-12. In fact I think freo, Carlton will likely pass us this season, they have some great talent. Whilst going through a mini rebuild, geeze I wish bucks would just be bold.

Thomas, whe, and c brown are not cutting it. Thomas and whe don’t impact the scoreboard and brown can’t kick. You cannot carry 3 players who are not contributing enough, especially on the scoreboard. Where are we getting 10 goals from with these 3 playing forward? back to full lenght matches we going to need 90plus points, I can barely find 60.

Cox 1
Degoey 1 (if plays mid 70%)
Checkers 1
Elliot 1
Ruscoe 1

Other than Degoey we won’t have anyone who you can pencil in as multiple goal kicker every week, listed above can prob pencil them in for 1 on average. So when we play Thomas, whe, brown who never hit the scoreboard we are in trouble. Our mids don’t kick enough goals. In 2010 that was our strength.

play anyone, fast track their development for 2022 and onwards. I’d love to see sidey permanent forward, Play Henry, ruscoe, McCreery, macrae, just get games into them. Sier needs to play every week, see if he develops or not, he hasn’t had a decent run at it.. Play Moore forward for a few games, mix things up. Play Grundy on the wing as a roving tall, try anything.

“the definition of insanity is doing the same and expecting different results”

I’d be much more happy blooding new faces and new positions and losing games than persisting with a setup and personal that just isn’t “quite” good enough.

our inablilty to score against the best two defensive teams in the comp and lose by a combined 7 points ? if that's the bench mark then we have another 15 teams that we beat whilst adjusting to the new game plan by years end.
Lol we weren’t in the contest until Richmond threw the towel in. 3 goals in the last 5 and lose by a goal tells you all you need to know

De Goey was fantastic. Looked in ripping condition, and really the only criticism was that one kick for goal where he just stabbed at it and didn't make the distance. Looked every bit a Brownlow chance.

Quaynor seems to have made another leap - game slowing down for him. Played his man well and rebounded amazingly. Going to be an absolute jet!

Grundy was solid, but I don't think he was pushing his hardest. However we dominated the clearance game in large part due to him. A few of those hitouts to JDG on the run were Nic Nat-esque.

Elliott was solid, provides an alternative to JDG in the middle. His disposal is pretty iffy around the ground though.

Tyler Brown was pretty unimpressive, 21 touches for only 124 metres gained is very Chris Mayne, but without the tackling pressure. However he did collect the ball, which is a plus I suppose.

Josh Daicos was the anti-Tyler Brown. Only got it 16 times but gained 336 metres because his usage is elite. Going to tear up the wing this year.

Bianco was unsighted. Should have played more.

Noble looked pretty decent, continuing his run of form. Like him further up the ground.

Pendlebury was really strong in the middle. Laid a heap of tackles, got clearances, and set up some great ball movement with his vision. Same old stuff with him.

Cameron provided a handy target up forward. With Kelly out he might get some time, depending on Checkers. He's a good grab.

Cal Brown played one of the most hair-pulling games I've ever seen. Showed absolutely nothing once again. This year is make or break for him.

Greenwood was unsighted but should get in ahead of the Brown brothers for Rd 1.

Will Kelly super unlucky, but in terms of what he was doing on-field I wasn't too impressed. Bad decision-making and missed an easy set-shot. Might have been a struggle getting used to the pace again.

Ruscoe was pretty quiet. Popped up for a handy goal and a nice setup of Darcy Cameron, but he doesn't apply nearly enough pressure inside 50 to justify 6 touches.

Sidebottom very unlucky, hopefully nothing at his age.

Roughy was alright, probably not going full pelt given his experience.

Josh Thomas was okay at best. His poor kicking hurt us on numerous times (hurt Kelly the most!), but I want to see some of the youth push him out.

Crisp was his usual rebounding self. Ever-reliable.

Moore provided a lot of run and carry, particularly for a CHB. Love to see it.

Hoskin-Elliott was an absolute ghost out there. No pressure, 6 touches and didn't score.

Ollie Henry was invisible too, but he's a kid and played on the same level as WHE, so can't fault him really.

Sier was solid. Physical presence inside that we desperately need with Tay out, and he uses his hands very well usually. Kicking is questionable, but that's alright.

Maynard was good. Bullocking, rebounding and aggressive. He's reliable.

Howe was pretty tidy for someone who hadn't played in forever. His lateral quickness might not be quite the same but he reads it well, and organises our backs. Love him back out there.

Madgen made some really poor decision-making, but he isn't a natural outlet defender. Not sure why we'd use him as such.

Cox was elite. Lock him in now that his eyes are working!

I think:

Ruscoe is a lock round 1, just has a habbit of kicking goals. Often relies on his ability to keep his feet in a contest, Stephenson like.

I would play both Cox and Cameron now that Kelly is out.

Sier is a lock too, his work in close is a level above the rest. His defensive efforts should be acknowledged too.

Qaynor, is a very exciting talent.

Elliot needs to play predominantly as a small forward.

I think play the kids regardless would be a disaster. Almost always it makes sense to pick them when they demonstrate they are better than someone in the 22. A good number of the new kids wont turn out as good as any of the three you mention.

Thomas and WHE are 100+ game players who go at 0.9 and 1.0 goals per game respectively. If you think Didak and Davis they were 1.2 and 1.3 so not a world of difference. Yes they are role players and great if some kids displace them by weight of performance in the VFL but until that happens they stay.

Can we not have WHE and Thomas running around in the same 22. Both are liabilities. Play the kids ahead of one of these or even both.

Good to see Mason have an impact. Shows his worth if kicked to correctly and he positions himself well

your view fair enough. or perhaps that we started jelling a lot more as a group and new game plan and once we got going Richmond couldn't quall the momentum

Martin and Cotchin were rested in the final quarter, the que was in the rack mate.

we weren’t disgraced by any means, but Richmond were better when it mattered.

I actually didn’t think Pendlebury had a good game. Turned the ball over and missed targets.

Yeah, not a bad crack when we were missing two crucial players (Tay and Checkers).

But there's definitely some dead weight that shouldn't be playing

Lol we weren’t in the contest until Richmond threw the towel in. 3 goals in the last 5 and lose by a goal tells you all you need to know

This is my biggest concern. We could only score freely once Cotchin, Dusty and especially Grimes went to the bench. The long, high kicks to Cameron/Cox look OK when Grimes isn't there, not so much for the other 10+ times where Grimes was able to intercept mark.

sidebottom was out from the first 5 min when they got 3 goals in 5 min,, there were probably 6-8 Richmond players as with Collingwood players fighting for a spot in the 22. so it's not at black and white ( no pun intended ) to say they " just put the Q in the rack " for some of these players they were playing for spots and contracts etc.

He was invisible and he is another cooked forward we need to replace asap. 2 score involvements is not something to hang your hat on
The biggest issue is that he's a player type playing a role that is defunct. Skilled outside marking forward flankers just have no place. With the lack of space up forward, you need forwards who can provide a reliable contest in the air and or at ground level.

I wish people would stop lazily referring to "The Browns" in game review threads. They are not the same person and played different games.
Totally agree.

I thought that Tyler did some very good things against Richmond. He is developing nicely. Looked fine as a wing option.

Callum however is true list clogger. Just not AFL standard, and probably should be delisted at seasons end. He did nothing to improve his kicking (both accuracy and depth) in the offseason.

positives:
Quaynor - looks very good

Daicos - ball use superb

Pendles - doesn’t look over the hill

Backline - we have very good defenders that probably get more support than they need.

De Goey - looked great in the middle but we also need him forward

negatives:
Forward line - banged on about it last night so I’m sure you’ll see my thoughts on it

Lack of depth/thin list - we have about 15 locks in the best 22 and then the rest is made up of list cloggers or kids

Kicking Skills - atrocious

Decision making - sort of combined with the kicking skills, kicking short to contests is just plain dumb

Tackling - we seem to have our tackles broken very easily, don’t wrap up the arms

speed -we have a lack of leg speed in the middle and up forward

game plan - still looks very negative with over support of our backline which is actually filled with very capable 1v1 defenders
