Did you actually read the post you linked to? It is pretty clearly indicating that the Gold Coast is a sporting town first and foremost, and that AFL is very much part of it. But hey, lets not let the truth get in the way of your "realism".

Apparently the NRL coverage live in Melbourne needed at least 300,000 to at the very least encourage Channel 9 to continue with Friday night prime time. Based on the viewing audience, I can't see them putting rugby leauge before shows like Airport (which rates much better). How will Channel 9 ever beat Channel 7?

Sydney based ratings analyst, Steve Allen of Fusion believes that “Obviously if a ratings success, Melbourne Storm matches will continue to be beamed into this market (Melbourne).

He also believes for Melbourne’s ratings of around 300,000 viewers “would be encouragement enough, we think, for Nine to continue with building an audience 400,000 would in our view confirm telecasting and represent an outstanding success, and 500,000 would be more than they could dream of “

It's really the most sensible position to take. Those who think that RL will die and AFL will take over the empty husk in Brisbane are deluding themselves. by the same token, RL adherents like Lebanese Forces are similarly deluded thinking that AFL has no presence at all in the northern cities. Crowd figures prove that notion wrong. Doesn't mean that in the end AFL will rival the NRL, but it's hardly non-existent in the northern states. The profile of the game will only increase as kids grow up with the game and become more multi-codal. The folks with fossilised notions of one code per city will find themselves outnumbered before too long.

As with most things, people will go to which thing is 'happening' at the present time. The Lions only 3 years ago were winning flags all the time. They were near unbeatable at the Gabba. So surprise surprise their games were packed. Now that they are rebuilding their crowds, surprise surprise, have dropped a bit.

The Broncos have been down for a few years. They won the premiership last year. Surprise surprise, Suncorp Stadium was full last night.

These days people in places like Sydney & Brisbane are just as likely to attend 4-5 different sports. They may well go to a Lions match. They may well go to a Broncos/Titans NRL, Reds Rugger or even Roar football match.

People who may well have been really 'into' the ions a couple of seasons ago just aren't any more. They may have swapped back to the Broncos again.

The Swans hope to get over 50000 to Homebush in a couple of weeks. There may well be a lot of people whose traditional code in rugby league, union or even football. Big deal, they have paid their money & have shown support for the Swans & AFL. That doesn't mean they still can't follow their NRL side as well.

I still don't believe an AFL team will ever work on the GC in my lifetime. Not enough support for AFL. 40,000 $2 pokie members aren't going to be that useful. It is QLD after all, foreign territory. There just deosn't seem to be a sporting culture there. Nothing's worked there yet. The name "Brisbane" encompasses the state in regards to support there so, as for finding a new batch of supporters in a RL state, good luck! Common sense tells me different.

The Swans have Saturday nights all to themselves, yet they always finish at least 4th rating roughly half of what the Storm got last night. The ABC love Saturday nights. SBS has had their moments with 10 year old repeats of the mighty Iron Chef.

The only RL you'll get on Saturday is on Foxsports.

Ch7 will be licking their lips at those figures, not because of Melbourne’s crap numbers that was to be expected. But wasn't Back 2 Back Friday night NRL suppose to be Ch9 saviour.

Considering it was opening round, the grand finalists for the last 2 years, and they only managed a paltry 638K across both games in Sydney and Brisbane. When Ch7 start broadcasting Friday Night Footy and along with Better Homes and Gardens they will dominate from 7:30- 11:30 Friday nights


When comparing Melbourne’s NRL figures to what the AFL gets in Sydney, their's a few things to take into consideration. Firstly Saturday night is the worst rating night of the week. secondly the AFL is always up against the NRL on Saturday night through the NRL on Pay TV where Sydney has a greater than 30% take-up rate not to mention the AFL also on Pay TV. And lastly NRL on TV in Melbourne is a novelty. so not only would you get the curious but you’d also get the true NRL fan (those not at the game anyway) who have a point to prove to let Ch 9 know that Melburnians will watch NRL if given the chance. but sadly for them that wasn't the case.


But more importantly I'd perfer Sydney to average only 150K or so every second week than for them to get 238K once a year
