Review Dogs def Freo 93-65 - Rd 13, 2021

We shouldn’t really even know the umps’ names.

I get the feeling he survives because he’s basically a pantomime villain for the crowd.

They revived a few new rules tonight.

1. JJ got done for taking the legs. When did you last see that one?
2. Dropping the ball is now a free to you if there is a hint of forward movement.
3. If you are Bont and two guys have the ball pinned to you it’s now htb.
4. it’s now ok to smash the guys back of the head when going for the mark (we benefitted from this one a bit- see our first goal)
5. Blocking the player going for the mark is ok (though to be fair they never pick this one up).

Remember Fremantle are bloody hard to beat at home - the crowd always has an effect, especially on umpiring, because people from Perth are so parochial and hate the "easterners", and it gets sucked into the umpiring (as we saw today).

Fremantle have hardly been a good team in the last 4 years or so, but the 28 point margin was still their eighth-worst out of the 31 games at Perth Stadium they've hosted interstate teams. Three of the seven margins worse were 30, 32, and 32.

Winning in Perth is always hard - not beating Fremantle in Perth since 2009 proves that. Take the wins when we can!

If he worked on his tank he could be a real asset
Given Caleb Daniel led the beep test with a level 16 in his draft combine year I'm not sure tank is an issue

For those wondering about Naughton's shots tonight his expected score was 4.3...

Couple more observations tonight :

- were we a tad slow?

- is Baz lacking some confidence? The 2019/2020 Baz would be fending players off, taking the game on.

Exactly my thoughts. Missed a few targets too.

Think he's at a low point for the first time in his short career. He has all the talent though which you don't just lose overnight so will work through it and turn it around. He's still a gem.

That’s all fair and I actually rate Freo. They’ve been disappointing this year after looking pretty good last year but there’s talent there, and for our boys having to move interstate and travel to WA gameday would have been taxing.

It was an ok win. Gave them an opportunity through bad kicking for goal, but got the rub with injuries late.

The lack of depth in our centre mid rotations is quite funny. We're certainly leaning on it to be the best centre clearance team this year.

I wonder if other teams don't put their superstars in the middle nearly as much simply because they don't have the fitness for it. Macrae, Bont and Libba all typically have 80+% time on ground, but the difference being is that other gun midfielders not only spent less time on ground, but have to spend time on ground resting forward as well.

Damn lucky tonight. They fell. Like 9 pins and this flattered us.

Naughton's ball drop is too vertical . Needs to angle the ball a bit more so he makes contact with the pointy bit of the ball. .

Actually zero to do with it

the ball drop distance between hand and foot is way too big and he doesn’t keep his head over the ball allowing too much deviation.

As he kicks it he “stands up” which just makes his drop even worse.

Go back and watch Plugger, Dunstall or even Beasley. They basically “hunch over the ball, guide it nearly all the way to their foot

Those that are bagging the umpires, they were shocking tonight for both teams, but don’t complain because we got a few gifts at crucial moments too

Thought Cordy was more than fine tonight. Had 2 bad moments or so and he's obviously not closing space on the lead well enough but he got some pretty crucial spoils in and didnt make any kicking clangers.
Agreed. Thought Cordy and Gardiner held up fine. Backline was not the problem today, kept them to a low score and even had Freo not got those injuries they wouldn't have got to 100 points anyway.

Cordy might be in trouble when Wood returns, but didn't have a bad game.

Our biggest problem was delivery into the forward 50. Naughton's marking made it look better than what it was sometimes. Same issue against Melbourne, lack of decent delivery and penetration (this can be due both due to the mids and forwards).

I think we can reasonably agree on the outsized effect that umpiring has on Perth crowds, which is further reflected in this game (and backed up by copious amounts of statistical research and statistical analysis), rather than just whining about umpires.

They've done research on German soccer crowds for example and teams that have a running track around the stadium actually get screwed because is makes the noise from the crowed a bit quieter like a few thousand less people were in the crowd, giving those teams are marginally lower home ground advantage.

It sucks, but it just makes the win a better won that we overcome the crowd.

Not sure we were lucky, I think we would have still won, but the 3 quick injuries left them in turmoil and made it a certainty for us.

Bye comes at a good time, we looked fatigued in the 2nd half.

Am pleased because we were challenged and we've struggled to cope when we have been this year.

Our injuries have exposed a vulnerable bottom 6 for us and I don't think we can win it with the team that played tonight.

Had Wilson had the balls (pun intended) to do the lower abdomen punch to a more senior player, every chance he would’ve been decked and rightly so. One or the more cowardly acts I’ve seen.

As for our goal kicking....seriously, seriously, we need to get our s*** together. It will come back to bite us in a big final and we’ll be screwed. Simple shots being missed.
