Part 2 of this thread is here:

Honestly I think Carlton have just as much chance with a first time coach. If you’re committed to revamping the footy department then starting fresh with a brand new coach might not be the worst thing.
I don't much mind. I'd prefer Pyke/Voss/Buckley to Lyon anyhow.

Cook is the guy we need. Liddle has made all the mistakes if a young, overly ambitious CEO. Over reaching his remit, and creating unecessary friction. Can't have a training wheels CEO and a training wheels coach.

Of course...though Sayers has neither the football expertise, nor the authority to offer the role without board approval. If a selection process...even a contrived one, is enough to put Ross offside, I'm glad we have outed him now.

Lyon has nothing to gain if he's overlooked after lining up against younger candidates. His attitude is 'I've been around long enough for you to know what I offer, you either want me or you don't'.

Fair enough from both Lyon and Carlton (in considering other applicants).

It was a toss up as to whether it would be a Bombers supporter or Tigers supporter lining them up.

Absolutely agree with you. If Clarko is won over by $$, then it's not going to end well. He is on record criticising the club on how they treated Teague. Surely he wouldn't back flip on that? He's also stated that he's taking the year off. Surely he wouldn't back flip on that?

And he's getting a reported $900K in 2022 anyway. So money isn't the issue for Clarko. Next year anyway.

Carlton had a good coach. Teague was more successful than any coach since Brett Ratten and before him, Walls.

Ratten was screwed out of a job he deserved to keep.

Teague the same.

I totally understand the frustration borne of years of underperformance, however your guy was on the right track and the review should have been slanted towards "how do we make this guy a Hardwick or a Clarkson or Chris Scott?".

Market has Clarko as favourite again.

Something is going on for that to happen. 8pm last night Clarko went from 10-1 / Betting suspended on him / Re opened betting at $5:50 around 9pm before the market was pulled by 9:30pm last night.

Reopens today and he is the $3 favourite all in under a 24hr period and the bookies always know more than us.

Intriguing to watch the market actually.

Teague new nothing about defence or how to stop a run on from the opposition, happened nearly every week.

So then, the club should acknowledge that and help him improve as a coach. That's what good people manager do, not sack and blame others for the overall failures of the club.
Or you get a better coach, your idea worked out for Hardwick but Teague was no Hardwick.

So you’re complimentary of the thorough process that’s in place to hire the new coach. And you predict Liddle and Lloyd might be out the door as part of the over-arching football review.

Liddle and Lloyd are part of the coaching selection panel.

Teague, who was about to be sacked was conducting player exit meetings, and Liddle and Lloyd who may also very well be departing as you suggest are sitting on the coaching selection panel. And Liddle is there despite it being very clear Brian Cook is being head hunted to take his job.

Seriously, at what point can we queue the Benny Hill music …?!?!?

Teague was the head coach in 2021, who else is going to conduct exit interviews?

This might be a radical suggestion and all but perhaps they could have kept Teague and hired a couple of very good defensive line coaches?

Teague was also lapsing offensively, and our ball movement went backwards every single year he was at the helm.

This also might be a radical suggestion, but maybe Teague just isn't much chop as head coach and we didn't think it'd be difficult to find a senior coach who'd outshine Teague by a long way.

Exactly the moment the president says we want the best most experienced coach, then really there's no need for a formal process, there's little doubt they approached Lyon a while ago, and have done due diligence on him and others. So why now being in a coaching commitee? These guys have years of actual experience.

The process of a coaching commitee should have been done after they received the review, it's too late now.

If you're going to say what the president did, you have to be like Eddie and headhunt the best like he did with Malthouse, Eddie worked on Mick for months, they told Shaw he wouldn't coach anymore halfway through the season and then went and headhunted. Carlton do the opposite, get a review done, then sack the coach, try hire a new coach, where none of the review recommendations will occur.

They should have had a list
Clarko
Ross
Roos
Simpson
Pyke
Williams

Now they'll be lucky to get Danni Laidley

That's ridiculous, you need to go through a thorough process and that doesn't just include giving an incoming coach carte blanc because they've got a solid coaching record and a few former players can vouch for them.

You’re not just choosing who the 'best' coach is, you're selecting based on who is going to be the best fit for your club and list, and you want them to outline why they want the position, what their vision is and what the blueprint is going to be to get there.

What you're referring to is exactly how Malthouse at Carlton type appointments occur.

Square pegs in round holes.

The expectations are too high.
Bolton was brought in as a total rebuild coach. Didn’t have to worry about the results, until he did.

Teague took over as a new coach and the obvious expectation was he would continuously improve the team to the point where they would be playing finals this year.

A new coach can’t have another 8 win season. The expectation is finals.

Hardwick and B Scott were given time to find their groove and develop their team. The new coach needs this as well, otherwise he will be on the scrap heap again in 2 years time.

Agreed, 2020 there were clear red flags with the way Teague was coaching. We took a step back defensively, and there were signs that the gameplan itself was far too offensive and clearly this was not going to be a sustainable way of playing.

In 2021 we took another step back defensively, and in addition the offensive side began to collapse. Our ball movement became confused and looked Bottom 4 standard at times. In fact I'd take North Melbourne's best ball movement this year v our best - it truly was dreadful at times.

It was also the perfect year to sneak into the finals. The first time since 2014 a team had got in on 11 wins, and we'd beaten plenty of teams around us on the ladder. Despite this, and little luck along the way (played West Coast in NSW, played Freo in Melbourne x2) we finished 13th.

And in all the other aspects - Teague's selection, reasonably poor development across the squad and losing some of the most standard games of the year made his position untenable.

Further to this i think the job was his after Clarko pulled out. Due to the fact Carlton became a laughing stock to the public and the infighting this caused, they had to make themselves look better therefore they announced a formal process in finding a coach. A bit late for that.

Ross understandably told them to shove it.
yep, well theyre scrambling now,its backfired in the case of Lyon,Pres or CEO or wotever he is shoulda kept his mouth shut,'some ppl you just cant reach'
to borrow a line from Coolhand Luke...anyway its retrievable and not unfixable but geez talkabout foot in mouth, that club just cant help themselves
FWIW if they dont land a tried and tested coach what a bunch of clowns...it will be a case of 'Same Circus just different clowns' if they appoint a rookie
faaaaaaarkkkin put ya ego's away Carlspoon,FFS read the room

Or it could be the bookies lulling the punters into a false sense of security and looking to improve liquidity of the market.

Almost all bookies I've known and seen are driving prestige cars and living in large expensive homes. That's off the back of punters they fleece money from. Markets are framed where it's almost impossible these days for bookies to lose money (if they don't take any risks)
