If they follow through with the process, it will be an assistant looking to step up that will end up getting the job.

I can’t see the Scott brothers go through the process.

Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Pretty sure that as a player Gia has played in a winning final more recently than Essendon fc

And still young enough to remember the last time Carlton made the finals.

Reckon Macrae was the best of the assistant coaches on offer and Collingwood nabbed him.

Kingsley second best. He would be my tip if Carlton stick to their process. Will just need good support behind him.

Lucky last gets Yze.

Seems they are balls deep into Hewett as well. The advantage of this is it keeps players like Setterfield, Dow and Kennedy out of the side. A decent upgrade on the talents of these three at the CFC.

Age article today suggests Brad Scott leading the race.

This sort of reporting is stupid. What 'race'?

Carlton might be a rabble, but as far as I'm aware, they aren't lining up prospective coaches and getting them to run a 1500 to get the job

The Age really reported that Carlton were putting together a field of prospective applicants who they will then interview and are waiting to hear whether Brad Scott wants to be considered as part of that field. Nothing more.

I love how these things get turned into a series of 'shock, horror' pieces as Caroline Wilson et al need their story of the day. Ross Lyon promised himself the job at a time when Carlton still had a coach and weren't even looking, and his mates went a thousand miles past reality and gave him the job. Then he backed out when he found out there was a process, and his mates went a million miles the other way and slammed Carlton for a process that hadn't even started. Then slammed Carlton for sounding out whether Clarkson, the best coach of his generation, wanted to be considered. Then slammed Carlton again because Clarkson said no.

IT's sheer insanity really. From all accounts Carlton:
- waited to see the results of the review before making a decision on the coach; despite what the media said
- gave Teague a genuine chance to present his case at the end of the year; reviewed his proposal, and decided to move on
- wanted to run a thorough process in the off-season, dsepite what the media said
- sounded out some obvious experienced candidates
- are now finalising the field and will then run the intended process

In the end, all that matters is the end result: will the club get a coach who can take us forward? Will we make necessary changes to other aspects of the football department so that we can move forward? Will we continue to make changes in coming years and continue to get better?

Would be a great get for the club.

Natural defensive mid who can play a few different roles and is currently in his prime.

You know it's a commonly used phrase right? Not to be taken literally, except apparently, by you.

Leading the race, leading candidate, frontrunner, etc...

Do you also assume when someone says "bite the bullet" that they're talking about literally biting a bullet? Or if they said they'll "sleep on it" that they'll literally lie down on top of 'it' and go to sleep?

It's a commonly used, and commonly misused analogy. In this case it is misused.

It works well for things that are continuous. The 'vaccine race' between Victoria and NSW? Sure... you can see and clearly measure who is ahead.

It doesn't work at ALL as an analogy for a discrete process. Carlton will gather information, then make an appointment. There's no race. There's no way of being 'ahead'.

To explore the analogy further, consider the difference at the Olympics between the 1500m and the High Jump. Could someone be the favorite in the High Jump? Could they be an impressive performer, with a strong history? Sure. But you won't know who wins until the end, even once the competition has started. If you said someone was 'winning' the High Jump halfway through, that would be an inaccurate and useless statement to make.

Selecting a coach is like the High Jump. It misrepresents the process to compare it to a race.

So Scott wouldn't be the leading candidate given the very specific statements made by Sayers about the expectation being finals and that they wanted the most experienced coach?

Sounds to me like he would in fact, be the most experienced coach on the market. Unless Sayers has suddenly changed his mind, which would awkwardly coincide with both Clarkson and Lyon pulling out.

This post is how I imagine the discussions in Carlton board meetings at the moment.

Again, you can say he is the candidate that might appear to match what the club is looking for. Just as in the High Jump you can say 'X is the favourite' or whatever. I can think of a dozen experienced candidates. Sayers previous comments give a pretty good reason why we might be sounding him out, though.

But he isn't 'leading the race' and more than you can say the favourite is 'winning' the high jump halfway through. That implies he is already winning a process where other candidates haven't even had a chance to present yet.

In doing so, it presents assumptions about the process: that the process is sham and that if Scott is interested the job is his (as it was with Lyon etc).

Not only that, it is a massive leap from 'Carlton have asked Brad Scott whether he is interested in applying' (ie: building a field of candidates) to 'Scott is leading the race'.

It is also exactly the same leap that was made previously with Clarkson and Lyon by the media (and apparently by Lyon himself). Asking someone if they are interested in applying is not the same as promising them the job. The only people who gave Lyon/Clarkson anything were the media.

Oh so it's the coaches fault?

Funny how it's always the coaches fault at Carlton.
