I think you still need to have a good balance of age on the list.

I don't think having a massive gap in quality for 3 or 4 years is great list management.

This seems like the perfect year to hit the draft, much like Port did in 2018 and Melbourne did in 2019.

Ben at the end of next season would be great.
Let’s get the best mids we can now. In the meantime we’ve got Max, Tim and The Greatest Sharman for this season.

Did Lloyds comments regarding Ben King elude to us making a play for him this year or next?

he kept the finer details a little vague IMO

Unless we get massive unders for Bing (which we won't) I don't see why we need him. When will St Kilda realise that the feel-good story of a family connection does not automatically translate into on-field success? (Raph Clarke, Nicholas Winmar, etc, etc)

You can't clone Max King and you don't want to. It's a lazy way to recruit, IMO.
I half agree. The ostensible family connection as a draft criteria has to march right out of Moorabbin, but just this time it's worth it.

Ben King is not just someone's brother/cousin/childhood mate.

He's a young 3 year player of much proven ability and an agile tall player. He is a model citizen. He can play back if needed. He has experience as The Man in the forward line. The only experience he now lacks is finals. The only reason he wouldn't be wanted in any particular team if he wanted to come is if you didn't have room for him, and that's our real issue. Finding the trading stakes is just something you do and take the hit. You'd be nuts to not go for it, and look back with regret that would make the Petracca thing seem insignificant.

Of course, he is also the identical twin of a current Saint, and a lifetime fan and just his presence alone would inspire a generation of young Saints fans. Anyway, regardless of how we feel about it, there's no doubt the club will bust their nuts to bring him home so this discussion is moot.

Saints have been clear with their intentions to land him for 3 years and are likely building a team that would accommodate him if we can land Ben. There is no way he just accidentally 'doesn't fit' they will have planned for it. You don't track someone this closely for several seasons to decide he isn't a player you want.

Moot it may be, but we’ll be discussing it for the entire year I have no doubt.

His comments were relating to the end of next year.

Seriously, nothing has changed. Lloyd simply wants Essendon to make a play for King while admitting the Saints are very confident about getting him. At no stage did Lloyd dispute that Saints confidence wasn’t justified.

He’s just stirring things up. It’s quiet and it’s the silly season.

Caroline Wilson and Jake Niall said ages ago that Saints were really confident of landing Bing and that their sources confirmed that the club had reason to be confident.

Wilson keeps reiterating it. When silly Craig Hutchison floated the Essendon possibility of a play for Bing she said she had an impeccable source (whatever that means). Lloyd also sat there silently and nodded.

I have no idea what is happening behind the scenes but this stirring things up via the media isn’t new if a story involves Essendon. Until we hear anything of substance I’d just ignore it.

It will be interesting next year if King does nominate us, we'd probably need three first rounders.

Expecting a very quiet trade period. Main focus is on getting the NGA boys.

If you are going to question players not being in someone's best 22, you also need to then say you who would take out for those 2 players to be in.

Sharman had a great 3 and a half games, and he could easily cement a spot up forward next year. But it isnt unreasonable from him to not be in someones best 22 with King, Marshall and Membrey all in the front half already.

Same with Highmore. Could easily put himself into the best 22. But with a spot in the team left for a genuine centre half back, it isnt unreasonable to have Wilkie and Coffield as the 3rd tall/interceptor in front of Highmore.
Oh I do? Thanks for the heads up.

Tells a tale about our list through the 10's eh?

Newnes. No trade interest, taken as DFA

Steven. 4 x BnF and traded for a junk pick

Dunstan. Delisted and zero trade interest. Likely to be taken in rookie draft.

Lonie. Shopped around twice with no interest.

Ross. 2 x BnF . No suitable interest from other Clubs so appears hes going to take our 2 year deal.

700-odd games between them.
When was Dunstan delisted?

Can almost guarantee 1 of 2 things will happen:

Owens will get selected in the top 20 and this place will lose its sh*t,

Or

Owens will get selected at pick 21 or deeper and we won’t even match and this place will lose its sh*t.

Either way we’re losing our sh*t

Imagine if it’s the latter. The herds with pitch forks will be marching down to Moorabbin.

We really need to lose the dead wood if the possible trades come up. I can think of more reasons to keep Long than Battle actually given his hardness and the fact that Battle seems so vanilla.
I’d even say I’d prefer keeping Kent than Battle.

Wont be 3 first rounders.
Expecting 2022 and 2023 first rounders and probably something late or a fringe player to sweeten it

Ya just gotta laugh at Matty Lloyd this morning. Explains how well Max & Ben played together in the same forward line at school and at Sandy. Then immediately proceeds to contradict himself by saying that 2 x 200cm forwards can’t work in the same forward line.

He couldn’t possibly disguise his desire to advertise Essendon to Ben any worse.

For what it’s worth. Most premiership teams change the game with something new and sometimes radical, most of the time game plans etc. I want us to be the team that changes the game and has every other club try and emulate what we create with our forward line. If we are to pull off the King twin reunion that is.

No way! Much prefer Battle

A mate of mine was drafted in the first round to geelong years ago. Gun HFF/mid. Obviously got no midfield minutes at geelong because....geelong. He had to play a role on the HFF operating only in a particular triangle on the ground. Obviously taking away all natural instincts and creativity.
Richo looked like he was all about role rather than instinct and flair. Billings looks like it’s been flogged out of him.
only have to look at Steele to see what letting a player of the chain can do
Nakia?

Only 12 months and two weeks until the end of the 'Is Ben King coming to the Saints' convo.
Yippee. [emoji38][emoji38]

Matt Rendell saying we didn't know McCartin had diabetes before we drafted him.

Shut the fu** up you racist dumb campaigner the whole ******* world knew.

Why do I subject myself to TR.

Not true

But we didn't know Jamie Cripps had diabetes when he arrived at the club
