Amazing the amount of talk on Ben King in the media currently, he isn’t going anywhere this trade period.

Unless there’s a chance????

Wouldn’t want to lose Rankine, Lukosius and King all next year.

Just from Trade Radio/people calling in. Goes to show how anticipated this trade is 12 months out.

Who cares if we disrespect Fold Coast.

they aren't respected by anyone in the football industry.

A fake plastic club with no support apart from AFL administrators who have making them viable a KRA on their PRD so they can get their fat bonuses.

Where was the respect for the St.Kilda fans when Ben King indicated he wanted out of GC after two years and the AFL came and and rorted the SC with 'ambassador' money to basically make a 20 y.o one of the highest paid players in the game and deny the 55,000 Saints members the chance to see him in our colours?

Fold Coast is a basket case and a money pit. they can't manage their books and have 38 contracted players currently on their books. The need to make three mandantory changes to their list and have committed to Chol.

That means there will be a fire sale of under performing players on over inflated contracts.

So nope no respect for them. All they have done is the drain the competition of talent and are a farce. But I am sure the AFl will keep pouring millions into them and keep screwing over the smaller clubs like they did with Kings contract.

I think the AFL just sees the GC as one large academy right now that needs to be supported to facilitate the flow over of junior talent into all clubs in years to come.

I don’t subscribe to the notion the AFL wants them to win a flag, but rather the AFL wants them to be able to generate their own talent and the current turnover of interstate talent is an acceptable means to an end.

Trade more picks for established players, the draft is hit and miss anyway. Build a decent team with some select high end draft picks and focus wherever possible on Qld talent.

The AFL have made things unnecessarily difficult Imo, why a trade week, why can’t you trade players during the season, why can’t you trade kids you’ve just drafted. Draft tampering is a ripper as well, why shouldn’t a kid be honest and say don’t draft me because at best I’ll be two and out. If you back yourself in to change the kids mind who’s fault is it if you can’t and he requests a trade.

Lastly it’s a sporting graveyard, the Lions argued against another team and who’s to say they couldn’t have grown football just as much on their own. Maybe they would have played 3 games a year on the coast and the AFL could have pumped some of that money into local clubs for junior development.

It's the long game. You get kids playing juniors, hardly any will become players but they all grow up watching AFL on TV and get eyes and feet on their product. I remember they said the same thing about the Melbourne Storm.

Other sports hate AFL because they are very good at sending all the talented juniors into pathways. It's very cheap and organised compared to things like Tennis and Soccer. Footy was about $150 a year, soccer at Brighton just for the shit grades is about $1200, if you get into the academes it goes up from there. Tennis is hundreds a month if you want decent coaching for a good junior.

Man, I remember that debut season.. Lazarus and Bawden were about the only players you could recognise and thats only if you knew League. Heady times.

I live in Queensland and when I do get to go to a game of AFL footy, more often than not I go to a Gold Coast Suns match.
Witnessing a Gold Coast Suns game live at Metricon Stadium is nothing like witnessing a game in Victoria or even the Gabba for that matter. When you go there you just know they are never going to make it as a power club. It won't happen.
The Gold Coast itself is a holiday destination "playground" which can attract people from around the world, but as for AFL football it just doesn't have the same appeal. It's just not there.
In my view, the Gold Coast Suns can't and never will be able to compete to a premiership level against the likes of other power clubs in particular within the AFL competition.

Zero chance this year.

But given the underwhelming crop of players on the move this year, the only way to get calls and texts into Trade Radio is to talk about Ben King.

"He'd look good, wouldn't he?"

They have the right to come out and announce they are upset by the comment but I'm still not seeing anything that crosses a boundary or indicates that we expect to get him.
Any club would make the comment that they'd like to see Ben King in their jumper, because every club would want him.

The way we publicly push the idea that he'll come back to the Saints is a dangerous one IMO. It's likely to annoy the Suns who we still have to appease in a trade. In the past we have been burnt by wanting to get the trade story out to push memberships and publicity up before they are done. We don't hide our desperation and are ripe to be reamed by people like Bell. We have been kind of arrogantly joking about stealing him off them, if I was them I'd want to bend us over.
Like it or not, Gringo, the talk about it isn't gonna stop til he gets here. The media carry on about it being poor form, but they love it - something to talk about. I'm quite happy for this to be a constant topic of conversation. Partly because it's inevitable. Partly because I don't think it'll make any difference to what you're talking about above. Partly because it's going to drive the GC nuts having it constantly speculated over - they might eventually accept that the talk is never going to stop as long as he stays there.

The only 2 things that'll stop the talk are him coming here, or choosing another club. If the latter happens, I wash my hands of him anyway. Healy having a Nanna fit about it is hardly going to stop the talk.

GC have hated us every since we done that tweet after the draft about Ben coming to us when we drafted Max.

Even if he does ask for a trade, this will be the most expensive trade in history and one that I would not be comfortable making.

Time and time again Midfields win grand finals. We have already what looks like a once in a generation type key forward on the books with reasonable support in Membrey and Sharman plus maybe Battle or Marshall.

We have 1 elite mid and the rest are solid citizens. We need 2 more elite mids to be a top 2 side which wins flags

They have made it know though. They certainly aren't playing it cool even if they aren't being aggressively overt. We could easily do the usual thing of saying "he's a contracted player at another club, we worry about what's inside our 4 walls. If he was to come on the market we'd look at him just like any other available player". That's the accepted hose down when it comes to potential trade ins. We played Hill out in the media, Hanners etc. We like the media attention to sell hope to potential members but also wear the consequence at trade time. A bit like telling a salesman that you'll pay what ever it takes before you've started to negotiate the price.

Of course the media love it but so do we. We could bat it away and just stop the commentary from our end.

No we couldn't haha, as long they are on opposing clubs the talk will always be there.

Gags tried in the last interview he did. Immediately shut it down. McClure then kept firing questions about Ben back to him, Gags got noticeably pissed off and it was a very awkward end to the interview.

We can't bat it away and stop talking about it if the media keep insisting we answer questions about him.

I suspect they are trying to whip up the media frenzy so that when it happens it is due to us being evil, rather than them being a basket case.

So... when he signed last time, after consulting with satan, and no doubt his brother, would he have not told GC something to the effect of 'yeah, ok I'll sign, but next time I'm out of here'? The 'club supported' angle is meaningless, but his twin bro will always be a lure. No amount of money ends that. Maybe some sort of agreement on how it plays out is already in place.

With our search for a back-up ruck, I presume we are one of the clubs who has asked about Jordan Sweet.

Western Bulldogs’ back-up ruckman Jordon Sweet faces an uncertain future after being overlooked for a senior spot late in the season.

The 23-year-old has attracted some rival interest and could be tempted into a move elsewhere for more senior opportunities after falling out of the senior team.

Sweet played five games this season and showed promising signs averaging 20 hit-outs a game but is yet to agree to a contract extension at the kennel.

News Corp understands the Dogs want to keep Sweet and have offered him a new deal to keep him in red, white and blue for 2022

The 205cm Dog’s last game was in Round 11 against premiers Melbourne when Sweet had only three possessions in his battle with superstar big man Max Gawn.

Bulldogs’ coach Luke Beveridge opted for defender Lewis Young and even skipper Marcus Bontempelli in the ruck late in the season when Sweet was available.

While multiple clubs have inquired about Sweet’s situation, talks could drag on as the club weighs up whether to bolster its ruck stocks for next season.

I agree, the entire narrative appears to be completely driven by them and the media trying to make a story.

I just don't see any evidence that we have been aggressive or out of line with our own stance. I can't find anything more than general positive talk like "He's a great player, of course you would want him if you could get him."

Id prefer Max Lynch but he is probably ready to go to a clu where he caj fight for tge first ruck spot.

Sweet would be a genuine VFL back up so probably more likely

Sounds like the Petracca Paddy debate. I think the whole thing is a massive distraction and makes us lazy. We are moving pieces around and pushing pieces around to fit in a player we don't have any guarantees of even getting. I wish we'd just do something the normal way occasionally. We never seem to go by a script. Drafting your stars then filling the holes is a time honoured list build strategy.

We seem to be stripping the list out and rebuilding it with imported GOPs and high risk cheap draft picks and trying to replace the missing draft picks with semi developed players from other clubs which cost us more picks. Essendon and Carlton followed that path and have stayed in purgatory the whole time. Both have drafted their way out of it since then.
