I seriously hope we are no longer going down the Frawley, McKernan, Wood, etc. path anymore - not withstanding that Wood got a one year contact. (?)
No more recycling aging has-beens please. (Not including Paddy Ryder in this of course)

I would look at bringing in a cheap older #2 ruck to fill in the gap before Heath develops into the number 1 role.

Twomey just released his top 30 draft prospects for September. No Michito, but...

A member of St Kilda's Next Generation Academy, Windhager's progress this season has caught more eyes than just those of the Saints. Powerful and flexible, Windhager can be used in midfield roles or at either end of the ground. He overcame a knee reconstruction last year to piece together a strong campaign in 2021 and will be on the verge of the top-20 – where the Saints would not be able to match a bid for him.

Some guy called Carlos / Carl on trade radio suggesting we go after Tim Engish and play Marshall at CHB. Thoughts ?

Bevo clearly doesn't rate English. Played Lewis Young in the ruck this season and couldn't wait to get Martin into the side. From all report he wants to go back to W.A

I think a pick in the 20's may get the job done. Marshall CHF rotating with English would be an ideal scenario and has our ruck stocks sorted for the next 10 years.

Hartley would be worth a look. At least has a chance of lasting more than a year.

I agree, have a look at Hartley to bridge that gap but I would like to see us have a crack at Leek Alleer in the Draft. I like his attack, speed, ground ball and athleticism and could really set us up in our back 6.

Bevo doesn't rate English as a ruck because English is a crap ruckman.

They have made it know though. They certainly aren't playing it cool even if they aren't being aggressively overt. We could easily do the usual thing of saying "he's a contracted player at another club, we worry about what's inside our 4 walls. If he was to come on the market we'd look at him just like any other available player". That's the accepted hose down when it comes to potential trade ins. We played Hill out in the media, Hanners etc. We like the media attention to sell hope to potential members but also wear the consequence at trade time. A bit like telling a salesman that you'll pay what ever it takes before you've started to negotiate the price.

How did we play Hill out in the media?

It was rumoured he wanted to move back to Melb,
chose us & it was reported. Not like we could play our cards close to our chest after that.

If anything we’re very circumspect with our comments around trade period.

You can’t control the media narrative after a player selects your club as their preference.

As for Ben, I am yet to read or see anything that suggests we’ve been overtly open about landing him. Its all been media speculation. Finnis comments were very innocent

We also had Hill wrapped up by mid-May that season, so well before the media for a whiff of it.

Sounds like the Petracca Paddy debate. I think the whole thing is a massive distraction and makes us lazy. We are moving pieces around and pushing pieces around to fit in a player we don't have any guarantees of even getting. I wish we'd just do something the normal way occasionally. We never seem to go by a script. Drafting your stars then filling the holes is a time honoured list build strategy.

We seem to be stripping the list out and rebuilding it with imported GOPs and high risk cheap draft picks and trying to replace the missing draft picks with semi developed players from other clubs which cost us more picks. Essendon and Carlton followed that path and have stayed in purgatory the whole time. Both have drafted their way out of it since then.

Geez mate, you’re desperate to find the club at fault in absolutely everything.

They were super cheap, break glass in case of emergency signings.

Nothing wrong with that approach unless they all were required to play at once.

Which they were… then all got injured.

From memory Freo took it to the media through Peter Bell. He came out talking a massive game.

We offered our first pick and he laughed it off so we went to GWS and split it then traded with Port Adelaide before going back to Freo.

It was honestly one of the great trade periods. We went armed with a decent first and through splitting it, trading with port and then adding some fringe/old players like Acres, Bruce and Stuv we walked away with Hill, Howard, Ryder, Jones, Butler and Byrnes was picked up with one of the picks we got for Bruce

Luke Jackson, James Jordon, Jake Bowey, Kozzy Pickett. All first or second year players who played the entire finals run and most of the year. Melbourne weren’t concerned about playing old farts like Jones there. They played the kids and won the flag. No reason our kids can’t just be good.

Spot on. I’d be more comfortable with Leo Connolly with ball in hand late in a big final than Luke Dunstan.

Back the kids in, we’ve got enough peak age talent to support them.

Gringo, I feel like when you run out of stuff to be cranky about you make up ideas in your head to get cranky about...

What pieces are we currently moving around to fit a player in that hasn't committed yet?

As far as I'm aware the only thing currently being reported is we are trying to get a better hand in the draft, which makes sense when we have had one pick in the top 40 in two years

Have faith in Cal,he is never far of the mark

Last year he had Lachie Jones ranked 9, he went 16.
Connor Downie ranked 22, went 35.
Errol Gulden ranked 24, went 32.

Only Braeden Campbell (ranked 8) went above when he was bid on at pick 5.

Just goes to show, academy kids can be kind of forgotten about on draft night and slide. Fingers crossed we benefit from some slides.

They have? Last I checked we have won more finals in the last 6 years than both of them combined

We have only started our full on rebuild three years ago when Lethlean arrived. Carlton should start to move up soon. Their list just needs time now, they have most of the pieces in place.
