Thanks for the insight.
Has good endurance and deceptively, is quick. Coupled with his presence over the ball, composure and good defensive skills, I’ve thought he could make a good defensive midfielder that can link on the counter and deliver into F50.

Seen him at training in that role.

Hard no. The top 10 next year is projecting to be stronger than this year's top 10.
Why does it matter how strong the top 10 is this year when its pick 3?
Shouldn't you be comparing how strong the top 3 available this year compared to top 10 next year?

I really think we need to pick up a KPD with some experience even if he is just a back-up. We are light on for defenders with Tarrant leaving.
Other clubs seem to pick up solid mature rookie key defenders on a regular basis. Are there any key defenders in the VFL, SANF or WAFL worth looking at? Skinner seems to have had a strong season in the SANF?

No one from WAFL. Most are too small.

Maybe The best key position player outside the AFL has emerged and looms as both a plug and play piece and a long-term answer. A former Geelong Category B rookie, Blake Schlensog was unlucky to be delisted at the conclusion of the 2020 season, following rapid improvement in his two-year stint with the Cats.

Is he though? As a forward he's +3 disposals at worse DE, but Jack has him covered comfortably for scoreboard contributions if you add G+GA.
It's been clear all year that he's playing a pressure forward role, and everything else has been secondary. He got repeated plaudits from Noble and others in the club for how well he was playing that role. When our forward line started to function better in the second half of the year, I think a lot of that was because of his pressure. It's easy to take a player like that for granted if you don't see the link between Zurhaar or Larkey kicking big bags and the guy who's making life hell for the defenders by smashing them every time they try to transition the ball.

Even then, he had games like the one against Richmond where he showed signs of being extremely effective as a traditional small forward. Consider the fact that he's just turned 20, isn't anywhere close to his peak as a player and will keep building his fitness, strength and skills. At this stage his spot is not available, if he's going to be replaced it'll be with a player who has that same ability to generate pressure acts in and around the arc, not a prolific goal kicker.

edit: my mistake, he's still 19.

Something to notice is that Noble lumped him in with Tarryn Thomas and Curtis Taylor when talking about the different age groups during his Syd speech, both of whom are 21.

Its ok, I think Jack Mahony is good mate. I understand he is young, probably hasn't hit his ceiling yet and i think he probably ends up playing 100 or more games for the club. I also think Darcy Macphersons 2019 was really really good and we hope Jack could, and may, replicate. So i would like Macpherson next year. By saying i rate his best better isnt a slight on jack whatsoever. But we did finish 18th and have said we need additional forward pressure. Macpherson offers that.

I have also said they probably play in the same line up. I dont need an explanation of where mahony sits, ive seen the internal commentary and I rate him as a player

Dunno , would have though he’d have been picked up in MSD if clubs saw anything

Tall and injured. Just the way we like 'em.

My Vezpremi/Urquhart mail was days ahead of the question being asked at the presser.

You bring this up and it still gives me a cold sweat.

A colleague at the time had just caught up with Pat's mum and gave me some inside scoop before I informed her "no he's off to North".

Have we made a trade yet?
Surely trade period should only be over 4-5 days!!

Is it worth giving up number 1 pick in next year draft to land 3?

If we were fairly confident that GWS wasn't taking Callaghan then yeah, I would do it. I think he is worth the risk. It would also be nice if we could improve 20 a bit to get into the Sinn-zone. JHF, Callaghan and Sinn would be a super result imo. Get Sinn and Perez into the back line.

Anyone watched Sam Skinner this year? I read one write-up where they think he has played his way back onto an AFL list after his year in the SANF. Would he be eligible for the PSD?

I'm less inclined to rely on the "he's young" excuse for Mahony. When I watch him I see a clever, creative footballer who's useful and getting games on his merits right now. Good part is yes, he should also continue to get better over the coming couple of years. McPherson's 2019 was as a mid, and as a forward he's not obviously better by the stats than Jack.

I do have hope that DM will also be a useful addition to the list, and more competition for spots is never a bad thing.

He'd be available as a DFA.

With how tight list spots are I can't see us going out of our way to bring in depth until after the draft once we know whether we have any outstanding needs. A developing KPD via the draft is preferable to a stopgap.

Richmond’s trade with North Melbourne for ruckman Callum Coleman-Jones has hit an early roadblock given the Roos’ modest offerings for the developing key tall.

The Roos have been steadfast they will not offer up their pick 20 for a player who was drafted four years ago with that same pick – No. 20 – in the 2017 national draft.

The Tigers early threat will be to retain Coleman-Jones if a deal cannot be struck to compensate them for losing a player they believe has a huge future in the AFL.

That threat is less realistic given the Roos have pick one in the pre-season draft and could secure Coleman-Jones without having to hand over a national draft pick.

The Roos next pick after 20 is 38, but Richmond will want a selection closer to 20 to orchestrate a trade for Coleman-Jones.

Hopes the trade that would also see Robbie Tarrant get to Punt Road might proceed smoothly have evaporated.

Tarrant is a free agent but if he is included in the Coleman-Jones deal he does not officially arrive as a free agent, which would have diluted the compensation for Mabior Chol.

Richmond has no plans to bolster its midfield with a senior player from a rival side given cap constraints but has its eye on the Western Bulldogs’ No. 17 selection.

The Tigers already have picks 7 and 15 and with selections 26, 28, 38, 42, 47 plus the Coleman-Jones selection could trade up for a third top-20 selection.

Tarrant is set to be the club’s big-name addition as it improves its draft hand and continues to blood kids including Riley Collier-Dawkins, Thompson Dow, Will Martyn and Maurice Rioli Jr.
