Who pays for team travel expenses. The flight, hotel, meals, buses etc?
I assume the AFL does but i could be wrong
What standard hotel do they stay in?
Approximate total cost of sending a team and officials interstate for a match?

Assuming the AFL does pay for travel expenses what happens with teams like Hawthorn who choose to play home games out of state?
Do they have to pay their own travel bills and do they come under the salary cap?

The AFL pay for a certain amount of players and staff to travel and stay on each interstate trip.

If a club wishes to take extra players/staff above what the AFL fund then the club has to do it at it's own cost.

Thanks that's basically what i thought.

But for example do the AFL pay for Hawthorn to travel to Tasmania for their home games or do Hawthorn have to pay because they chose to go there and receive a hefty sponsorship for their trouble? And are these expenses included in the salary cap?

I am asking because of the uproar regarding Cousins and his $60,000 re-hab payment, if Hawks receive assistance from the AFL for something they choose to do or it is'nt included in the salary cap if they pay themselves is'nt this the same sort of scenario West Coast got criticised for?

Hawks dont pay for the cost of flying or the basic accomodation, if Hawks want to spend longer there then they have to fork out the money for that.

Let's say collingwood come to Perth and they are cashed up - so they bring two local WA boys with them to see their family but hide it as a "footy learning" trip. they also stay at 5* hotels and get the royal treatment. Is any of this counted as total player payments?

Take Kanagroos for example who would be in a motor lodge and be lucky if they got a bus to the game!

I know I am exaggerating - but it clearly does give wealthier clubs, mine included an unfair advantage.

I'm not sure if we pay for the flights, but I know we now pay for the flights to be 'carbon neutral'

http://hawthornfc.com.au/Season2007/...x?newsId=41449

Hawthorn’s trip to Tasmania this year will become carbon neutral flights thanks to a partnership with local organisation TreeSmart.

TreeSmart’s main business is offsetting greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector and planting eucalypt tree farms.

For every Hawthorn game in Tasmania this year TreeSmart will offset the 20 tonnes of carbon dioxide created, by planting and maintaining one hectare of eucalypt plantation.

Hawthorn’s Simon Taylor today launched Hawthorn’s community partnership with TreeSmart at Summerdale Primary School in Launceston.

Taylor officially opened the campaign by planting one of the 20 trees TreeSmart has donated to Summerdale PS.

In January 2007 TreeSmart were selected by the Victorian State Government to offset part of the emissions from the Victorian Government vehicle fleet.

TreeSmart will also offset carbon dioxide for travel taken by Hawks supporters attending Hawthorn’s Round 11 game against Sydney at the MCG.

TreeSmart empowers ordinary people to do extraordinary things about caring for our future environment. For more information visit the TreeSmart website TreeSmart.com.au

AFL arrange for the flight and accomodation, I believe they book it all in advance to get as much of a discount as they can. Clubs all stay at the same kind of places. If a club wanted to stay somewhere else I believe they would have to foot the entire bill.

Players get very good accomodation, I don't any club has the need to upgrade it. It is only for a night or two I believe.

It is not a TPP given clubs do not pay anything.

Thankyou, so Hawthorn get a free ride off the AFL when meeting sponsorship requirements they chose to accept of their own free will. Similar to Cousins re-hab I must say, where's the complaining about that?

BTW i don't care about it or Cousins re-hab fee, just thought it was a bit weird other examples were'nt criticised or even brought up by the media.

The AFL does fund most of it but the clubs make thier own arrangements. If the club wants to bring over extra players, support staff, families, etc, the clubs pay the extra. The clubs have access to the Qantas discount as they are a sponsor. Each club does thier own thing, but the AFL gives them some funds.

Good Evening Viewers

Last week Channel 10 in Brisbane ran a story on the return of Richard Hadley (2 knee recos in 2 years etc). It also mentioned that Hadley was unable to fly down with the team for the 2002 (?) grand final (as a non-GF player) as his fare would have been included in the salary cap.

I was not aware of this.

In any case, Hadley drove down and back, arriving in time for the mad Monday celebratioins.

I’m not sure if Hawthorn do get the free travel expenses. Unlike the Kangaroos, Melbourne etc. who deal directly with the AFL, Hawthorn’s agreement is coupled with a major sponsorship agreement exclusive of AFL backing.

Therefore there could potentially be an argument that Hawthorn are obligated to travel down to Tasmania to satisfy a private sponsor rather then the league as a whole and thus aren't entitled to travel expenses for the 4 times they travel down for matches...

In that case, Hawthorn would be obligated to pay their travel expenses in full…
