Won't transpire this way, but I would run with the following

Martin MacDonald Charlie
Fisher Harry Honey

Jsos

Still think Motlop plays early

Cuners is conundrum, his best/xfactor is good enough, but still lacks consistency due to his poor footy IQ

Given that they may run with 2 rucks, more likely Pitto plays number 1 ruck and TDK replaces MacDonald

Almost exactly what I had - I put in Durdin over Fisher, but no issue other way around. I agree - if TDK is in ruck, can't play Pitto forward, and with Young is FB, McDonald is only viable option, so must be in the side. Also agree with Pitto as ruck and TDK as fwd/ruck - far more likely.

Forwards are up and ready to select, sports fans. Before even choosing my 6, I know this will be the hardest yet for me personally.

We're now blessed with tons of options. While few are proven and give me supreme confidence, we have some sentience of depth and real competition.

I think that this one will really split the voting group.

My rationale FWIW:
  • Harry, Charlie and JSOS were my first three votes - all established and we know what we'll get. Best 22 when fit every day of the week.
  • Jack Martin and Zac Fisher took my starting spots on the HFF. Both still have some way to go but have earnt a starting spot more than the other, less tested forwards here. Both have midfield rotation capacity (being junior star mids) and can kick goals.
  • As our first 'pure small' I went with Matt Owies as he showed the most last year and deserves first crack. Has areas of improvement but with other dynamic smalls around him - he gives us consistency, pressure and a cool head in front of goals.
  • I went with Josh Honey over the likes of Durdin and Motlop for now, who for me is slightly ahead and has some incredibly dynamic and powerful traits that I think Voss will love. I've gone against a 'resting mid' in this group given Martin/Fish in the seven, which I think will be okay.
We'll have the likes of Zac, Doc, Stock, Martin and Fish all chopping out in the guts so our mid depth is solid with a group like this.

HF: Martin - McKay - Fisher
F: Silvagni - C. Curnow - Owies
I: Honey
So close!
I have Motlop ahead/ instead of Owies.

Assuming he is physically ready, get games in him & early too.
I would like to see other teams worried about our forwards, both in the air & at ground level 😀

It’s interesting to see which quality players missed out from the best 22.
Dare I say it - we have depth for a change 😱

The ruck situation really weakens us in 2022. It is forcing us look at two very weak rucks playing each week, or now worse, considering Mcdonald in best 22 to pinch hit in the ruck.

The weakness is that Pitto, TDK and McDonald….and Young are our 4 lowest ranked players on field. Only TDK looks like a player who could emerge. Maybe Young. Doubt the other two completely.

Going to be interesting to see what Voss does. Safe structure vs class of player on field.

I’m hoping Marchbank comes good. This allows Young to hit the ruck for 5 min spells while Marchbank covers. This removes reliance on Pitto or McDonald being forced to play for structure and improves on field class.

The concept of Marchbank not being able to cover KPD for 5-10 mins a quarter is ridiculous.

Yeah, that second ruck is a problem, pity McGovern or Jack weren’t just a bit bigger.

I'm part of the 1/3rd of the optimistic supporters who are hoping McGovern wasn't a bust! I feel he's going to be our barometer for the success of the 2022 season

I could be wrong, but I just don't see a world where McDonald is playing when Young is fit. We need to be courageous and play Young even in the midst of a form slump (if this happens). We need to know if Young is the future.
Out of curiosity, what has Young shown to warrant automatic selection?
He was a fringe kpd for a side that was thin on kpd..
I'd have McDonald ahead based on the fact that he's performed as a KPD in the past.

Motlop is a good chance to be a part of the 22. He looks physically ahead of where a lot of blokes are at his age. He looks like he hasn't missed much in his development and coming from a football family has probably been an advantage here. I wouldn't suggest he's in there from round one but would not write it off either.

Small forwards often play early if they are good and if he can do the running and stands up to the physicality then he's probably going to feature early. Also comes down to spots in the team as well.

Can we expect 2 from group of owies honey fish Motlop Fogarty and durdin to feature in rd1?

Wouldn't surprise me if he lines up in the pocket round 1, yet I could also see a scenario where he doesn't debut until a bit later, like Durdin.

As you said, small forwards can often play early, and it's going to come down to a combination of his form, the form of our other smalls, and also the structure Voss settles with (ie how many smalls are playing).

I think you can split that group into a few categories though.

Fisher & Fogarty I see as hhf/mid-fwds. Fish more dynamic, Fogarty better defensively. Both started more as mids than forwards.
Honey more of a power athlete, probably best suited on a flank but I think can play the genuine small fwd role, flank or maybe a medium fwd role.
Durdin is a mid-turned-small, but brings immense pressure so can play that small role or be a connection from the mids to fwds.
Owies is a funny one, kind of a leading small or the guy who gets out the back through workrate, not so much a crumber or particularly dynamic.
Motlop possibly the most natural small forward or the group, might be the only one who wasn't more of a mid through juniors?

How many play rd1 will depend on everyone's form and team structure. Might be that Voss wants 3 smalls with the three talls, and perhaps Martin plays less forward time. Could be Fisher HHF, Honey hf/small & Durdin small/pressure fwd, maybe even Motlop on the bench as a forward. Could also see a scenario where someone like Fisher is the only one from that list named (playing small fwd), if Martin doesn't play any mid and someone like Hewett/Philp/Cuningham/Kennedy/etc is selected on the other flank (plus the 3 talls).

So many factors come into play. Who are the other mids selected alongside Walsh, Cripps, Cerra & Hewett? Do we see Williams, Stocker, Kemp, Martin, Fisher, Fogarty, etc spend more time in the middle, which would open up smaller roles at either end of the ground? How many rucks/taller types in the 22? Does Voss stack the team with mids and only have one or two genuine smalls at each end?

We're just going to have to wait and see. I'm fanging for some scratch matches to get an indication of team selection, regarding both personnel and structure.

Yeah that is a good breakdown.
Our depth is so much better now that it’s hard to predict how things may pan out.

Interesting 32 people have slotted Jesse into the starting 7 without playing a game .. either our list is cactus or people have extremely high hopes of a 1st year player ...

Are there any Perth based fans that can report on how Motlop played at senior level in the WAFL?? This is generally a good indication of how quickly they will be able to adapt into the senior side, if he only played Colts then he might need longer to develop before he is ready..

What have our current lot of small forwards done to be ahead of him?? Owies has shown the most for me, but really he is averaging 8 possessions a game and 1.1 goals which is hardly screaming out pick me.. Honey & Durdin have shown glimpses but are a long way from locking in a spot..

Most teams, even the successful ones throw in a 1st gamer round 1 and it becomes their spot to lose, i would be happy for Motlop to be given first crack.
