Analysis Thilthorpe vs McDonald

Thats not quite true. The thread is about comparing TT to McD and whether we made the right choice. The basis revolves around our past poor selections. For me at this time I see a more competitive player in McD than I do in TT. Both have been in the system for the same length of time. So I am questioning whether we made the better choice. Now if you want to make this thread about struggling young forwards thats up to you. If you have an opinion regarding comparing the two players then please enlighten us. Your normally good for an opinion.

You really can't see why the ordinary development time for key position players is relevant to whether we should be drawing conclusions on the selection now?

Himmelberg is in his 6th season BTW, not his 4th...

Just to manage everyone's expectations, here's the number of seasons some of the best young forwards have taken before kicking 30 goals:

Harry McKay - 5
Tom Hawkins (ok, not young!) - 6
Charlie Curnow - 3 (done it once)
Nick Larkey - 4
Max King - 2
Ben King - 3
Oscar Allen - none so far in his 4 years
Todd Marshall - non so far in 6 years

So let's give both kids a bit of time to develop before we say either of them is better.
Footywire has Hawkins getting 34 in year three (from 24 games played) and then regressing for a couple of years

But his game this weekend was strong.

He literally kicked two goals in two minutes in the first quarter when Sydney was overunning West Coast (5.4 to 0.0) and nothing else for the rest of the game. Those 2 goals are his season's entire tally. McDonald is going to be good, but at this stage Thilthorpe is looking the better option for us IMO.

Tougher to begin as a forward in our team than Sydney's given where the two clubs are at
Good call, Sydney have a much better midfielders with skills compares to our players who can’t hit the side of a barn. Also they have Franklin, Heeney and Haywood , so he will get a 4th or 5 th defender. TT will get second best as after Walker we have very little goal threat.

It wasnt just the goals. Tonight I listed to a comment made by Mathew Lloyd and he made a similar statement to what I was saying. His comment also revolved around McD having more freedom given that Buddy wasnt playing.

The draft is a bit of a crap shoot with tall forwards. Let's hope it pays off. I would have liked to have seen more from him but forwards can take 4 or 5 years to develop. He needs to put on some real muscle and get stronger imo.

We're going to have a thread about young key forwards struggling, and the miracle of Himmelberg coming good in his fourth year and with 30 plus games without the obvious dawning on anyone about what to expect from young key forwards aren't we?
Yep. If you're not dominating at 18 years of age, you never will.

Who said that. Thats not what the thread is about. In the opening post I acknowledged that it takes time for the forwards to develop. Your comment is shifting the my thread into a opportunity to try and make me out to be bitching unnecessarily because you think I expect TT to be at the top of his game. Thats crap. You just trying to be a smart arse. Read the opening post. If you can, try to understand what I've said. I just trying to compare TT with McD. as they stand right now. They both have been in the system for 18 months. Its nothing to do with suggesting we get rid of TT. God some people just like to create an issue when there is none.

McDonald played awesome for 2 mins where he kicked 2 goals in back to back possessions but hasn't done a whole lot else for the rest of the 3 games.
Rd 1: 5 touches and 1 behind in a 20 point win where his team kicked 17.10. 66% game time
Rd 2: 6 touches and no score in a 30 point win where his team kicked 17.5, 73% game time
Rd 5: 12 touches and 2 goals in a 63 point win where his team kicked 18.13. 69% game time
Last weekend was clearly his best game of the season, but it was against an injury and covid ravaged West Coast and Sydney scored the first 56 points of the game
Obviously Thilthorpe isn't in the team at the moment, so it's unfair to judge him too harshly, but McDonald isn't really making us regret our pick yet.
Thilthorpe has kicked 10 goals in 3 games (plus 16.3 touches and 5.7 marks) in the 2s and you'd have to assume is going to return to the team this weekend.
Thilthorpe looked awesome last season and there's no reason to think he won't be an extremely good player for us for the rest of his career.

Rachele is better than both of these guys lol ... he's going to kick 30+ in his rookie year and make AA is he keeps going.

If LM was picked by afc, he'd be signing with west coast next year already

Ok - I’ll tell you right here and now why Thilthorpe was the right pick.

Not today, not tomorrow- probably not next year BUT eventually he will be that player that has the ability to put himself wherever he needs to be to have a crucial impact on big games at crucial times. Forward - back - middle - won’t matter.

McDonald will I think be a very good footballer but I don’t think he’ll ever have that kind of versatility.
