Essendon and Carlton go head to head for the second time in the VFL since the abolishment of the AFL reserves, the Blues getting over the line last time the two sides met. Carlton's strength in the AFL has translated through to the VFL as well, the Blues currently 6th on the VFL ladder and only percentage away from 4th spot, whilst the Bombers are languishing in 19th out of 21 teams at the bottom, having their first win the last game before the bye.

As mentioned earlier, Essendon got their first win against Coburg the week before having a bye along with the AFL side, the win coming in bizarre circumstances with Jake Sutton kicking the ball and it bouncing over a couple of Coburg players heads before travelling over the line for a point after the siren. Kaine Baldwin stepped up inside 50 with 3 goals, 2 coming in the last quarter whilst James Stewart controlled the air down back with 15 marks in a bid to return to the AFL side.

Carlton ran over the top of cellar dwellars Preston, who lead from the 10 minute mark of the first quarter until the 23rd minute mark of the last, the Blues recording a 9 point win in a game they would have been hoping to get a bit of percentage from. Young gun Sam Philp had 3 goals with his 18 touches, and former Magpie also had 3 goals amongst his 23 disposals whilst Joel Trudgeon had 27 disposals in the middle of the ground.

I want to believe, given their struggles against Preston, but Carlton by 27. Possible Essendon side:

OB: Nick Bryan - Alec Waterman - Joe Atley
IC: Andrew Phillips - Bruno Laguda - Sam Conforti - Joel Fitzgerald

Possible Carlton side:

A full set of AFL listed backs and forwards.... with Brayden Ham still in the midfield.

I doubt Cottrell plays for them after geting activated in the first quarter, suspect Goetz might get the call up. Waterman might get up, if not it's probably Sutton who comes in.

Expect either McBride or Eyre to play forward to try to stretch their undersized defence, and they don't really have that much in terms of talls up there anyway.
