Just had another look at the presser from Monday. Barham does says that the club "thinks" they need an experienced coach, and the club "thinks" it will give the players an opportunity to succeed.
I would say they gives them some wriggle room should the best available be an untried assistant?
we shouldn't care about wriggle room and optics from a presser
If Barham said experienced coach and a 2 year assistant rises to the top of the list through the interview process, hire them.

actions over words is what we need now.

The fact that Hird hasn't publicly said he's not interested is.. unsettling.
thing is, with the history, you have to ask a) why he got back into coaching, b) did so away from Vic & c) at a club where the incumbent was high on the pressure list coming into the season.

Not hard to see a senior gig would be on his radar.
Prep for the possibility it happens because it really might.

Don't disagree with this.

Thoughts on Ken Hinkley? We'd have to offer a long term deal so there is risk.
Ken's done great things to get Port into a competing side.
Seems weird how Port fans don't like him?

I just think he would be burnt out coming straight to Essendon from Port.
Seems another Lyon to Fremantle scenario. Worked for a bit, then went off the rails.

You could argue from this article that he’s interested or not

If he wasnt interested at all then i think he would flat out say no, i wont be going through the interview process. He will play it differently to last year of course, he's not an idiot.

Yeah I look at it as he may be interested. Fingers crossed

He didn’t get back in to coaching of his own volition, the GWS role was more of a leadership mentoring one, he’s only coaching now because McVeigh asked Hird and Solomon to give him a hand.

If Hird was genuinely interested in being an AFL head coach again, he would have gone away and done something - anything - to develop his coaching skillset. Much like how Voss went away and spent years at Port as an assistant after his time at Brisbane failed.

People like Ross know they are in demand so if he plays his cards right he can get a much more favourable deal, if he is actually interested that is...

I don't think that means anything - the way we stoke his ego I doubt he feels like he needs to do anything else in coaching. He didn't think that in 2011 and if that's still his mindset now then ****, we are in trouble.

It does but you know what will happen. It gives the media an in to run with which creates the circus . They need to start thinking about what they are going to say a bit more and stop making off the cuff remarks. It is like politics . Stick to the message.

In the end it does not really matter but it just goes onto the pile of situations we keep putting ourselves in by not being overly smart in the media and it adds pressure even if it is not a large deal if we find a less experienced coach. Maybe I would just like to see our leaders take their foot out of their mouth for even a week. Barham should know better given he was the head of Ten Sport.

ScoMo is apparently a marketing guru.

sometimes the people who rise the ranks aren't that great at the thing they're leading.

It's quite startling the amount of groundswell support there is for Hird on social media. I'd say at a guess approximately 7 out of 10 want it to happen.

I've got a hunch it might happen via a transitional situation... James will be brought back to the club as an assistant in some capacity and somehow just magically he will find a way into a caretaker roll to supposedly nullify inevitable outcry.

I know it all looks like a clean out at this initial stage and an external review is pending etc but I'm still a bit dubious whether the club has learnt anything with Sheedy seemingly being allowed to puppet master on the side...

Now to find a new coach we can knife... 🧐

Sean Wellman is $26 on Sportsbet.

Clearly leaving the board so he can become our next coach!

Oh boy.

Ross Lyon on footy classified did a very good job of not denying he would be interested in the gig.

he’s 4.50 odds atm
