It was a practice match, who gives a crap?

Beau has more than proved his worth as a wrecking ball defensive forward already. To say that Ginni is far more important and better credentialed based on goals kicked is nonsense. They play different roles.
Each to their own. I know which of the two I prefer at this stage of their career.

This.

It's why I didn't care so much about Hawks getting all these easy inside 50s, the midfield was barely putting any pressure on so they were just breezing through. Practice matches are good for getting rid of the rust, I don't read too much more into them than that.

That’s fine if you prefer Ginni. But it doesn’t mean that Beau is even close to not being best 22. They’re both well and truly entrenched.

It’s interesting how Johnson seems to be on the outer with the selectors these days and no longer seems to be in our best 23 anymore.I watched a replay of our final against Geelong the other day,and thought he was quite good in that game.He kicked two goals and should have kicked three, but for missing an easy shot at goal in the first quarter. His marking was good and he seemed to be providing a good target as a lead up forward. The only thing he seems to lack is good pressure and his second and third efforts need to improve as well.If he can work on these issues I still think he can have a good career with us,as he does have talent and is a natural forward.
That's the question. Can he add fierce defensive pressure to his bag of tricks?

Beau is in the best 22 because of what he contributes defensively and his pace, but he needs to find much more of the ball, particularly if the talk of him playing midfield is true. Ginni is a match winner.

You say it was only a practice match, which is true, but certain players would be expected to be trying harder than others, and in my mind, he is one of those players I'd have thought would be looking to show that he has stepped up from last year.

In any case, the players have a whole season ahead of them to prove they belong in the team, so I am not jumping to any early conclusions about anybody.

Forward pockets like Ginni and Beau dont really get much ball. Its not in the nature of the position. 6-12 touches is usually about right unless they are rotating in and out of another role. Forward pockets need to do other things because they dont get the ball like kick goals (Ginni) or stop opposition players from getting the ball or transitioning it out easily (Beau).
If Beau moves up the field into another position he will get more ball no questions asked.

I thought he was crucial to us last year as someone who really stood up those in tight finishes.

Ginnivan may not get much ball, but when he gets it, you and everyone else know it, and as often as not his possessions results in a goal - lots of them over a season. McCreery does lots of what Ginni doesn't, namely running. His tackles can be reminiscent enough of the best of Maynard. He can be a lovely kick at goal, but how often do we get to see him do it?

He almost doesn't seem to want to get the ball or get into spots where he is likely to grab or be fed the ball. Receiving and disposing of the ball is not his game's highest priority.

Ginni is unmissable on the ground, due to his flair, cheek, swagger and talent. McCreery never stops moving long enough to be capable of revving up the crowd with some antics.

I am fine with Beau's workmanlike diligence and the tackles that stop opponents in their tracks.

But I wish he got more possessions and kicks.

No argument that he has shown an ability to perform on the big stage. He probably touches the ball more often in a game than I did in a season of inter-school rugby, but in his case, lack of intestinal fortitude is not what holds him back from the contest.

I think he'll gradually get more involved. At the moment he is a bit old fashioned in that he always goes the body checking shepherd on an opponent when his teammate has the ball, rather than the modern way of peeling off to make himself an option. I think they'll train the latter into him, as some of his runs when he did receive last year were breathtaking.

Some of the biggest current myth’s on the Collingwood board in no particular order:

  • McReery is on the edge of best 22.
  • Macrae is a good kick.
  • McStay is on big money.
  • Kelly needs luck with injury.
  • We need to play both Cox and Cameron.

In context Macrae is the king of the floater and is largely a “safe” kick. He needs to add penetration in order to be rated as a good kick. If you compare his kicking to JDG’s it’s a non contest and I think JDG can be inconsistent.
Most young players should be on the edge of best 22 in a premiership contending side. McReery has value, he really does…but he also has some weaknesses. Doesn’t go hard when the ball is in dispute, could kick more goals although I recognise that’s not his primary focus. I wouldn’t say he’s untouchable.

Macrae is indeed a shit kick.

McStay is on more money than Brisbane, and more money than what he warrants based on his career to date. We’ve taken a calculated risk that he will become a key forward that kicks multiple goals each game and bags on occasion. So the jury is still out on this one.

Kelly has had a horrid run with injury and COVID interruptions.

Agree, on the Cox and Cameron situation. I think Cox will kick more goals now that we have two other talls in the forward line though. My preference is to play both until it doesn’t work.

Adams will average more tackles inside 50 than Beau when you calculate time as a forward.

Where does Mihocek play? I'd say at FF.
Reef on a HFF if in fact he plays.
Looking a chance to play either way
Mihocek should play the same role as always - hit high, then turn his man and get back inside 50. McStay starting deep and presenting at the footy. Reef starting on the bench -chopping out both of them and Elliott (who I think will play higher up the ground than last year due to the addition of McStay)

With Beau, I think there's an element of lacking self belief.
He has the tools, so it's about developing them.
Fly is the ideal person to do that.
The snippet in that article about Fly telling McStay that he's the big banana now instead of third in line after Daniher & Hipwood is the type of thing I mean.

I reckon McStay has greater mobility than the battle weary Mihocek so checkers should play deeper forward.
Could well extend his career.

I think it will be the other way around - simply because Checkers does most of his damage running back into 50, whereas McStay is your more traditional present at the footy tall forward. I also think it's a more physical role to present at the footy than the Checkers style, so don't really agree that deep forward will extend Checkers career.

Just another example of fly connecting and building a young man up.
