More importantly, does he have a basketball background?
Almost certainly. Most boys who have a height of 180cm or more will come from a basketball background at some point in their lives. It's an easy game to play because it's not particularly long and has simple rules. Moreover, every school has hoops and it becomes a challenge from an early age to dunk, hit the ring, etc. In terms of a summer sport, basketball is more friendly than laborious cricket which takes up days upon days. A basketball tournament can play two games in the space of one T20 cricket match. It can even be played in conjunction with other sports, including footy in the winter as tedium.

Schools push lunchtime basketball, too, because there's no tackling. Almost anyone who's played lunch time footy in the past decade has been told off for tackling or dangerous kicking or some other "safety" reason. But basketball? Never had any such complaints. So it becomes so convenient. In PE lessons, it's a game of choice as it's easy to make mixed-team, watching the NBA during class is what you do to maximise the Kayo subscription. And there are some who take advantage of the offers Sportsbet has from about 16 (using fake ID from a benevolent sibling). Placing a multi is really common during cold, winter lunchtimes as you're able to stream the match. Becomes a social gambling opportunity. Modern Australia has a huge American influence. Look at the clothes produced by Factorie and Cotton On - NBA collections constantly. Celts, Lakers and Bulls are as much a part of a childhood as the Pies, Blues and Tigers.

So TLDR: Most modern draftees come from a basketball background.

Training report: Friday March 10th.

The last Friday session prior to round 1. Only one more main session left next week which will determine selection but think they would know at this point, or if not, then 99% of them.

Lets get to it.

Absent:
Johnson

Rehab:
  • Draper (finally after like 3 weeks, he makes an appeatance) - Did some running, then went off. So whatever his issue is, its a slow build back up like Macrae was. Suppose we'll see next week what his injury is in the injury report.
  • Kreuger was sighted on the outer briefly, like he had been doing rehab inside.
  • Dean -- popped out with a full leg moon boot. More than his foot, but it reached right up toward his knee type boot.

Razor Ray made his return to umpiring after overcoming a hip injury in the last 12 months by umpiring our match sim, which was pretty decent. There was 4 x 13 min quarters. Given there was no practice games over the weekend.

It was also pressure day, there groups of players roated throughout the ground and focused on pressuring the ball carrier to make a mistake and turnover. Which is an element to our game plan.

Other drills included, kicking into space to a target. This is a common drill that happens at every session.

There was applauds as it seems Fin Macrae, after 3 months is finally back in full training!

Match sim was interesting. Players tried in different positions, experimenting a little.

Fin Macrae looks to be playing wing and forward. Maybe this is to add strings to his bow after being penciled in as inside mid prior this year.
Harvey Harrison didn't attend any centre bounces either, mainly playing forward. This may be to ease him back into it after his hammy issues. He played one half.

Ginni played forward mostly, but also mdfield in the later stages of the match sim.
The wings were: Josh D, Sidebottom, Murley and Macrae.

Allan played in the middle.

They put Kelly on the wing in the last quarter. Ginni and Allan at centre bounce during this time.

De Goey was the most dominant mid for either side. Carmichael on the other team did pretty well, too. De Goey just moving with purpose, breaking away from clearance and stoppage. Boy on a mission.

I thought Fin's kicking was really good, seems to have extra distance in his boot, and seems to trust himself a bit more than he used to. It's always been his strongest skill, don't think he trusted himself not to stuff up previously.

Reef has such explosive pace within 20 metres of the ball, the way he just glides across the ground is sublime. Definitely a prescence. Just one thing he needs to work on is his set shots, needs to be a bit more accurate. He's got no issue in finding the ball though. Could have easily had 3-4 goals if he converted his chances.

Murphy performed pretty strongly playing that third tall/interceptor role off half back. Frampton too also had some good moments with ball in hand, he has a good boot on him. Nice kicking.

Wilson had a really lively 1st half. He was just everywhere, kicked a couple goals, and just found himself where the ball was really. Not the first time either, this is a current theme with him the last few weeks.

Ginni had a really good session, bigger and stronger, players have trouble tackling him. Seems he is finding new ways to evade tackles. There was a play in a pressure drill where he ran through traffic, Maynard tried to tackle him but Ginni moved and weaved under his arms and dished off the handball.

In terms of the rucks: Cox's tap work was really good, and Cameron's around the ground stuff was great. Probably why the two compliment one another.
Which is the way they'll go for the time being.

Post session
: Macrae, Ginni and Beau did some extra work with Jetta. Running and a bit of different drills between the three of them.
Adams and Nick did some power running by themselves, off like the speed of light. You wouldn't know Adams had done his groin. Maybe tearing it off the bone was for the best, it's like he has come back a new player. Maybe it re-grew stronger Hahaha.

Great news about macrae. He’s been written off by a few, I still see him as a player. He was doing everything he was asked last year and he won best vfl player. Interesting they’ve put him on wing/forward, one of his strengths during the vfl season I noticed was goals from stoppages inside 50. He kicked a few this way.

Johnson being absent is interesting. I do wonder if there’s something more to it regarding his pre season and form.

Thanks for all the updates Jen, those who live interstate like me especially appreciate it

Fantastic to have HH back
Everything crossed for these hammies bc, imo, this guy could be a difference maker out of the middle
Allan played in the middle.
Oh man….🙌

Here's hoping the younger group of mids/forwards like Reef, HH, Macrae, Draper, Allan & Carmichael get a good string of injury-free games this year and start to press the AFL players above them.

He made good strides on the inside last year after struggling in the role early. I wouldn't be surprised if a more outside role is temporary due to the back injury.

Reminds me a lot of Cal Brown. He will be very good at VFL level but to my eye just doesn’t have the weapons, speed or X-factor to become a best-22 player at AFL level. I will, of course, be delighted if he proves me wrong.

Macrae is a lot more skilled by foot than Callum. And doesn’t panic like he does with ball in hand

I don't see Cal, but at the moment he's a bit of an in betweener - smart on the outside, but not really athletic enough for that yet. And improving on the inside, but not quite sharp enough yet, a bit too reactive. Development us key, could become very good or remain nqr.

Thanks Jen for your work this preseason and thanks to the other contributors; you all make the long preseason much shorter.

I saw some really nice passes in his first few senior games that made me sit up. Especially off of the left..
Seems like he's growing into his body..
Let's hope that is what the back issues are.
I rate this kid.

Thanks for this very insightful.

Fin on a wing seems like a very odd decision to me. From the limited games I’ve seen him play he’s too slow and unfit to play wing, I also didn’t think his kicking was that good…it has been a while, and maybe my recollection isn’t accurate and I guess he could have improved across the board.

What really stood out to me was his ability to hit a target in congestion by hand. He should be on ball for me, resting up forward.

Maybe this was to ease him into it given his back issue. We will see whether this role continues or not. But I didn’t mind it. His kicking somehow got better during his injuring and now can kick further. His kicking was always a strong point. He just had to have the confidence in himself
