As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

You should never reward incompetence. Maybe If Nth spent their energy on finding a decent recruiter, coach, CEO, etc, they wouldn't be in this mess. Why should other clubs suffer because Nth can't identify talent or work out a strategy to win games.
I think it's naive to say that the reason North are bad is simply 'they haven't been a able to find a decent recruiter, coach, CEO etc.'

But that's fine, let's agree to disagree.

I think from memory when they lodged there NGA players Sanders wasn’t one of them and they’re trying to change that too
Yeah they didn't think he was eligible. I'm more just saying that there's more steps than just adding him to North's academy because they don't have an academy that let's them match where he'll be taken.

That's a bit dramatic. Two in the last 15 years have been worse 😇
It is one of the worst ones.
Hawks I think in 09 is the worst since 2000, young team wins a flag against a team having one of the most dominant seasons in history, has key forwards hitting their prime, then get everything so wrong they fall apart and recover but finish a game and a half out of the 8. High expectations but underwhelmed massively.
Bulldogs in 2017 was bad but then they won the flag from 7th and then missed finals by 4 points and percentage. Expectations of back to back for the dogs was low.
And Richmond in 2021 were a game and a half out of the 8 but they had gone back to back then finished 12th. Low expectations of a 3peat after their wins in 17, 19 and 20.
I think we could miss the 8 by 2/6/10 points but ultimately it's a massively disappointing drop off from last year to this season. Injuries have been horrendous but lots of players form drops is damning.

There was an interesting point from Bartel during the week.

If you accept priority picks, then you should have to turn your list management over to the AFL entirely.

Makes sense to me.

We've got Stanley.

Why recruit a player that knocked us back last year?

Plus the dickhead had a man-bun for most of his career so that should be a sign there.

You can't bitch out Grundy's hair when Rhys uses half the world's global production of hair mousse each week while being worse than Grundy in his role as a modern ruck.

I don't want Grundy because I think his attitude sucks, but "We've got Stanley" isn't a trump card

Sav - Port
Grundy - Cats
Port 2nd Rounder - Dees

??

Would make sense to me, if Grundy agrees. I don't think Grundy's got the drive to impose himself, but neither does Stanley and Grundy's an upgrade around the ground and in follow-up.

Would be funny to towel up Collingwood with him and Ollie in the team too.

We can't rely on a 20-year-old to shoulder our ruck for a full season. Who better for him to learn from than Grundy. We get 2-3 years of Grundy at his peak while Conway perfects his craft in the VFL / backup AFL ruck.

If Grundy is cheap, it's a no-brainer.
The only potential fly in the ointment is that Grundy is 29, not 31. Could have four years of footy left.

My ideal recruit would be someone like Stef Martin at the Dogs last year. Put in enough time to see the young starlet through at minimal cost, then job done.

Knocking us back once shouldn’t be a reason not to ask. Circumstances have changed.

As for the hair… Dusty can play well with a skunk stapled to his head plus neck tatts, appearance matters not.

Anyone watch the games Grundy played this season without Gawn? That would give the real indication of what he has left in the tank as a valuable player. At his best he’s light years ahead of Stanley but tbh I can’t remember his games as solo ruck this season
He played well, also the game Gawn got injured in.

Was it 2020 where they de-listed half their squad and traded Ben Brown for peanuts?
I think north shows why priority picks should exist, but something like pick 30 should be what is offered. If you win less than 8 games over a 2 year period, you get Pick 30 ( and that can even be fixed, so to not be pushed back by father sons, academy players).

Yes but they did finish second last already that year
Yeah, but gutting your list is not a reason to be given draft assistance.
Which ever way you look at it, if priority picks are meant to help fix list issues, those list issues are self inflicted.
It's nothing other than rewarding incompetence.

If there are issues in administration or player retention due to other factors, then that is another thing. The afl can give off field assistance. But priority picks are not the answer to that.

That's premiership ruckman Rhys Stanley, please.

It does to me.

I know some have been keen on Van De Heuval in the VFL threads, he's been invited to the combine.

Hopefully he has a bad day at the Combine, doesn't get much attention... and we pick him up as a rookie. I already thought he was a better back than Sav and now with him out the door, he'd be a handy replacement.

From The Age - No mention of Smith or Grundy because the article is about uncontracted players. Just some interesting bits and pieces:

There are some interesting names here. Doedee, who is recovering from a second ACL setback, has suitors, including confirming himself that Brisbane have shown interest. Key defenders are in demand, but the Crows are hopeful he will stay.

Krueger’s been unfortunate with injury and has proven he can play at AFL level, and is expected to be retained
(just of interest)

The length of Parish’s potential deal is part of why he is yet to re-commit at this late stage of the season, while Bryan and Zerk-Thatcher both have opposition interest and must decide if they want to stay at Tullamarine.

Isaac Smith has already announced this will be his last season, but Gary Rohan has inked another one-year deal for 2024. The biggest player movement story at the Cattery centres on Ratugolea, who stopped barely short of requesting a trade to Port Adelaide last year (mostly because Geelong refused to part with him). The Power are still interested in the intercepting defender, while the Swans are also keeping tabs on him. Hawkins foreshadowed early in the season that it could be his final year but is playing well enough to continue in 2024. Tuohy also remains a senior regular but is nearing the end of his stellar career, while the future for veteran ruckmen Stanley and Ceglar could depend on the Cats’ ability to find a younger model. Menegola’s been stuck in the VFL after a knee injury delayed his season.

Flanders has caused a stir with his career-best form since returning to the senior side in round 15. He has put off talks to the end of the season amid interest from St Kilda and other Victorian clubs. Sharp has not played an AFL game since his ill-fated trade request to Fremantle last year, and it would be a shock if he was at the Suns beyond this season. Anderson took indefinite leave mid-year, while fellow mature-age recruits Constable (two games), Blakely and Stein (none) do not appear to be in the club’s plans.

Kieren Briggs has emerged as the Giants’ No.1 ruckman, and they also have academy product Nick Madden developing on the rookie list, so there is a decent chance one of Flynn or Preuss tries their luck elsewhere in 2024.

Georgiades has a big decision to make, with interest from several Victorian clubs and back home in Western Australia – but Port Adelaide want him to stay. There is less certainty about some others, including Jonas, Lycett and Fantasia. Teakle is one of a number of ruckmen across the competition searching for greater opportunity, while Bonner played double-digit games again this year but might have to find a new home.

The Saints will be one of the most fascinating clubs to watch in the months ahead, with new list boss Stephen Silvagni and Graeme “Gubby” Allan at the helm.
Geeez that'll end well :$

Industry sources expect St Kilda to be active in the trade period, with 2017 top-10 picks Clark and Coffield and contracted duo Dougal Howard and Jack Billings all potentially gettable.

The Swans have made (Dylan) Stephens an offer, but the hard-running wingman is weighing up his future and won’t make a call until season’s end.

Sweet’s name has been in ruck-merry-go-round discussions all year long, and it remains to be seen whether he moves to another club after being stuck behind Tim English for years. A number of other experienced players and fringe senior types – Crozier, Duryea, Hannan, McComb, McLean, McNeil and (Roarke) Smith – are still on the hunt for a deal.
