As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

Not that I disagree, but surely we also don't want a competition that has a few clubs that are perennial cellar dwellers?

You could argue, probably rightly, that continually providing draft concessions is not the best way to ensure this doesn't happen. But generally I'm ok with poor clubs getting extra assistance. The league is already so compromised anyway, it might as well be compromised in a way that tries to even the ledger.
You should never reward incompetence. Maybe If Nth spent their energy on finding a decent recruiter, coach, CEO, etc, they wouldn't be in this mess. Why should other clubs suffer because Nth can't identify talent or work out a strategy to win games.

Listing as NGA is pointless though as he'll be top 20 though right? It's pre-draft selection they want I thought

There is a range of nga.. Pre listing to not in the top 40. I think it might end up being like Father Son . They can match and pay for any bid...but ist another case of AFL chooklotto

Doesn't that come with the territory?

Isn't any club that finishes last, and therefore gets pick 1, by definition not that good..

Yes ..it is and its getting harder to do.

They will look to extend him asap but not all kids want that. Look at the kid Cadman at GWS. No contract extension atm. If nothing changes in the next 12 months he will be all the talk.

Two quick points:
1) the AFL’s formula could be based on anything, given their secrecy.
2) North will have zero say on anyone’s destination

The formula has never been officially released yet it is been published a few times. What we do not know is the information that is used to calculate the result. The comp pick that we got for Motlop was apparently just on the correct side of one bandwidth ... conveniently allowing the Ablett deal to get done. We really do not know what the top 5% of players are paid..so we really do not know where a proposed wage would fit

If Ess decided to under bid which results in a band2 or band 3 comp...then imo North will play a role in what happens.

I started typing out to tag you in this for that very reason but chose to deny you the satisfaction

Be noteworthy what happens long term. A lot of egg on face for melb if they trade him out for anything less than substantial while keeping money on their cap. ... especially if Gawn goes down next year. Wilson says R2 with Melb paying some of his money ... So he might be around 500, 000 sal cap player.

I would think swan and port would be more enticing than us atm. I guess that can change based on who we bring in.

So if we bring in Grundy... and Smith ... I guess we make a bit noise in this trade period after all.

How would North actually have any influence?

The AFL deliberately doesn’t confirm what the compo will be until the deal is actually done. Hence North can’t then turn around and say oh, actually, we will offer McKay a contract.

Besides, the contract between McKay and Essendon is probably already agreed, possibly even months ago.

Bad Karma? Why? Its not like we held a gun to anyones head. It was GC who wanted and had to clear money.
More the afl for not managing the Suns better, we can't be blamed unless we got some inside info from Brad Scott.
Anyway we aren't perfect, no club is.
We can have pride we have always tried hard to win, certainly more than the average of other clubs has.

What are the odds of a kid who has played about 5 games in 2 years being right for a full season of AFL footy?
We've got Stanley.

Why recruit a player that knocked us back last year?

Plus the dickhead had a man-bun for most of his career so that should be a sign there.

I agree ..but if we go and get the likes of Smith etc... its likely that we will do our best to load up again.
The club hopefully knows where Cameron, Stewart's bodies are at. I guess we have to back in our current list to still contend next year, I think we finish between 13th to 1st, a very big range.
Even if it is 13th, we get good picks and probably know the list is going to get younger, and get some good picks in before Tasmania affects the draft pools.

Sanders isn't currently in North's academy, they are asking the AFL to add him to it.

It makes absolutely zero sense in the context of the purpose of the academies:

I don't believe Sanders is part of an indigenous community with limited access to football programs given he has only just received his certificate of Aboriginality, and given he was part of TAS and Allies state academies before receiving his certificate.
Sanders definitely not part of any aboriginal community, and it’s a farce should he be allowed to join norths nga as the idea of that is they identify him early and then develop him, of which they did not.

Anyone watch the games Grundy played this season without Gawn? That would give the real indication of what he has left in the tank as a valuable player. At his best he’s light years ahead of Stanley but tbh I can’t remember his games as solo ruck this season

You don't want to let embarrassment prevent you from making the right decision

I’m very much in the camp of if a player doesn’t want to come here after many attempts then stuff them when they decide they want to come ala Higgins

Exact reason why I don’t want Grundy or Goldstein

Yeah, I was more meaning that north's NGA is not a Northern academy which means they have to change the rules or make an exception to allow them to get Sanders
I think from memory when they lodged there NGA players Sanders wasn’t one of them and they’re trying to change that too

Grundy could have been a premiership player too.

Sanders said North had been in contact with him since he was 15 years old, which North will no doubt use in their argument. Though Sanders' old man was a former TAS U18 state team coach, so it's hard to argue North provided him opportunities he wouldn't have otherwise had.

It's no different to Ugle Hagan, who attended a Melbourne private school and played TAC Cup.
